Re: [REQ] New Inside the (CPU) Second article, please?

I have noticed that Nvidia cards require more cpu power than AMD cards. (approx 20% difference)

Would be good to see a comparison between the two with cpu load measured..

Re: Workstation (Ideas?)

Just gonna throw this out there... 7990 is only $619, you could get two of them.... And the equivalent of one is what the new Mac Pro will have, so you can bet the software you will use will be optimised for it You'd need a beefy power supply as each card is 375w, but you would then have 4x7970ghz e...

Re: Help with CPU choice

Don't agree with you regarding custom water. Having just made the move myself, the difference in peak temperatures is significant. Peak, even with high voltage, without delidding, I'm seeing 77C on my 4770 @ 1.3v/4.6ghz (with AVX2 - so real voltage is 1.37ish). Previously with an AIO solution equiva...

Get an xspc kit to start with, great bang for buck, though you will need to add a graphics block to it

Re: Building my Dream Machine! Questions & Suggestions

Suggestions: 1. Mobo - most z87 motherboards will last through Broadwell. I suggest Asrock as a brand as you will get more value for your hard earned than with asus or gigabyte (example Asrock z87 extreme6) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157371 2. Dear Sam, I would like to preface this by saying that I really appreciate that AMD is participating in the TR community forums. I believe that this kind of line of sight to end users is what will help differentiate AMD in the future from it's competitors. My only query, and it's a small one, is Why...

Re: Choosing a CPU cooler

I'm in the AIO water camp. I have a thermaltake water performer 2.0, with noctua P12 fans. It is more than sufficient for my basic overclocking needs. Some people would say "eww thermatlake" or "AIO pumps don't have a lot of flow rate" but to be quite honest, I don't care. It &qu...

Re: Any CPU releases in the coming months ?

I think that the 3820 suggestion is really bad advice. The 1550 platform (Haswell) is likely to work fine with the next series chip (Broadwell) For about the same price as the 3820 in the USA, you're able to pick up a 4770k which will be significantly faster. Your motherboard will cost less also. Cl...

Re: Custom PC for Data Crunching and Image editing

I know you are not overclocking. That said, any intel processor will benefit from a decent aftermarket heatsink as turbo speed is limited by temperature. I.e. the cooler you can keep your processor, the faster it will stay without downthrottling. A cooler master h212 will cost you $30, and even if y...

Re: Video editing build

I think you will find that the performance gains from going a 3930 vs a 4770 will be marginal Consider the 3930 has sandybridge cores, which are about 12-15% slower than ivy bridge, which is about 7% slower than Haswell (faster once the new instructions are implemented) Anand has some nice graphs he...

Re: Next gen gaming = AMD CPU/GPU?

5 years is a long time especially in computing Current gen, intel is ahead of AMD. For gaming however it is very unlikely you will need an octocore, much less a 4770. Heck my 3770 doesn't usually hit more than 25% on most games. Personally if it was just gaming I've be interested in, I'd be looking ...

I agree with the seasonic recommendation and suggest you look at silverstone also. As for the flimsy comment - Lots of people complain about the flimsiness (?) of Asrock boards, however I have not seen one complaint about a board breaking and having used 5 of the boards myself, I haven't had any iss...

Re: Gathering info for future gaming build

Here's a few things: - If you're overclocking _anything_ get more than a 430w PSU. - The z77m-pro is a decent motherboard unless you are intending to run SLI at a later date, in which case get the "extreme" version. - If you are buying in stages, the things that have the shortest lifecycle...

Re: DIY NAS recommendations

I have a nas based around a z68 mini itx board which has 6 sata ports (3.0gbps but you simply won't saturate that with a mechanical drive) I was originally going to go mini-itx, but the cost was significantly higher for the case, and it necessitated a sata card. I am currently running an i5-2330 (3....
