Re: Something's different...

Anyways, I'll keep off the front page for a bit and hope it turns to a more useful environment. For this subject going forward I'll try to keep my salt to myself. I'm definitely skeptical but I'm also hopeful. The worst that can happen is that I go away. The best that could happen is that I continu...

Re: Something's different...

Since the redesign, I've switched my home page to the forums so that I get taken here directly, bypassing that horrible front page. I visited the front page daily to see if there were any positive changes but having seen no progress, daily turned into every 2 days and now it's going on 3 days betwee...

Re: Something's different...

I know this sounds counter, but I find it easier to deal with something just "ending" then having it slowly degrade in quality to the point that it is a rubbish shell of itself. For example: Firefly: It just ended abruptly, but my memories of every episode are amazing. I can look back on t...

Re: Something's different...

Well, everybody else has pretty much said everything there is too say, I really have nothing new too add. I agree with all the complaints.

This brings me back to when TR went with the "tan" option. Heh, there was a lot of outcry over that.

I believe Tesla buying Maxwell was largely in part due to the technology Maxwell had concerning their ultra-capacitor technology. Could be, Maxwell also has this "dry electrode coating" technology that may give Tesla a nice savings on battery costs as well as an increase in energy density...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

There is a ton of venture capitalism money right now sustaining "zombie companies" (see Uber, Lyft, Tesla). These companies lose on the order of ~$1Billion / year, with no actual plan of becoming profitable. I'd have to disagree with you lumping Tesla in with Uber & Lyft. Tesla actual...

Hey, nobody got hurt, and $300 is likely a substantial fraction of the vehicle's current value. In retrospect, I should've insisted that he also take the dead rear projection TV sitting in the back of the van that I still need to dispose of! Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

A trouble I foresee for the big car manufacturer's is how they are going to deal with inherently lower need for service on electric cars? As was said earlier, that's ~40+% of their actual profit. Even if say 10% of their sales are EV's, that starts eating into their bottom line pretty noticeably. C...

So mine is rated at 150km, In the winter I see 110km to maybe 100km on the guessometer on the very coldest days where I have been driving down the 417 on the previous day - the Soul isn't aerodynamic and highway speeds seriously hurt its range. Anyway, maybe it would help if I shared more of my personal cult story too? Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

The other problem, and this gets political, is that the #1 riders of a bus system will typically be poor people who can't afford a car. If you don't have a car, the bus system is your only option for suburban transit. Suburban carless people are the primary users of the bus system, and as such the ...

I think you missed his point. Yes the net density by province is lower, but most of the population they do have is concentrated in a strip fairly close to the southern border. You can serve a pretty large percentage of the population by putting a charging network there. Agreed. 90% of Canada's popu...

Re: For movies on disc (yeah), do you ever register your "digital copy?"

I still buy DVD's and I don't bother registering the digital copy. Seems like too much of a hassle and besides, who's to say they'll keep the service running? I'm not worried about my DVD's wearing out or losing them. Although there are a few dvd's that I own that refuse to play on my media center b...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

Not to mention that electricity is generally generated by fossil fuels, and Alberta of all places is certainly no exception to this. Ontario is MOSTLY green. Generally speaking, an EV in Ontario isn't transferring the pollution from the tail pipe to the power plant. Lease vs buy (original question)...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

Tbh I think anyone buying a new ICE engine in 2019 knowing about the climate issues needs to give their head a shake. I'm fully in favor of a ban on ice engine sales by 2030. Until you can convince all the old people that climate change is real, electric vehicles really are cheaper, and they'll be ...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

Couple things: A kona and a soul Ev are not the same. The soul Ev only gets like 200km per charge. Why it's on the market with that same old system for almost the same price as the kona is beyond me, especially since the new soul is based on the kona platform. Buying probably makes sense, and they'...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

The 2019 Leaf/Leaf+ still lacks battery thermal management, but thankfully the 2019 Kona does have this. So for the Ottawa summers, I should be good. I know our winters will drop the battery capacity (my friend who drives a 2017 Nissan Leaf here in Ottawa says about 25% loss, but I'd like to hear w...

Re: To Lease or too buy an EV

Normally I wouldn't suggest leasing anything, but given the uncertainty of EV battery life running through repeated Canadian winters and the lousy resale value on both (a) Hyundai Group vehicles and (b) EVs in general, this might be an exception. The usual caveat being that you're already financial...
