They even apparently have 'em at K-Mart, though for $18 more. I am sure there are other examples such that an agreeable seller is available for most people. 8)

Re: F@H Info Thread

It has been a while since I spent money and time folding, but I do still have the TRfolding.org domain pointing to this forum, at least until April 2019. Since I had to renew some domain name registrations today, I was reminded of that. It's easier to remember and type trfolding.org than to click a ...

Re: Tesla Model S Totaled Due To Battery Explosion

Someone check me on this, but isn't coal just petroleum that needs more pressure and time? Or do they come from completely distinct precursors? Coal tends to be from large plants, while oil tends to be from single-celled stuff.  Oversimplified to be sure. [...] Admittedly this is being a bit of a P...

Well, as someone who previously owned a domain (and hosted a small site) dedicated to the DYMT forum thread, I suppose I can't be too critical of impulse buy domains! Believe me, after the novelty wears off, you'll get tired of paying the renewal fee. I hope you only registered it for one yea...

There is absolutely no flow to that design at all. To be fair, I didn't care for their previous design, either. I haven't read Ars on a regular basis for quite some time. I stopped right around the time they went to the previous layout, now that I think about it. I forget how long it's been for me,...

This Honda is fairly close to what I learned using a clutch on. Though it was a 75 rather than 80, only a 4-speed, and less aggressively off-road. And I was 9 or 10. As my elder siblings got cars or permission on our parents' cars, they let me try theirs once my legs were long enough that I ...

I probably shouldn't add to this topic, since I generally agree with what's been said... though that won't quite stop me from adding my two bits. ;) When I read Flatland_Spider 's post about idiot managers, I assumed it also included the content and lack of objectivity in modern journalism itself, w...

Technician Class seems to be fairly popular at TR. Probably because, like me, many of us had the knowledge, but not the CW speed. I let mine expire without ever having gotten a transmitter, because, being 13 and soon to turn 14 and enter high school when I got my license, I soon saw the need to begi...

an HTPC / DVR on Comcast

The cost seems reasonable enough compared to the rentals from Comcast that it sounds like a good idea, especially right now. I'm thinking of getting this Ceton InfiniTV 6 PCIe - 5205-DCT06IN-PCIE tuner, currently on sale for the same price as the 4 tuner model ($199.99), and then building an HTPC ar...

Yeah, your observations match what I've seen. And it makes it a question for me whether it's worthwhile doing, rather than just picking up a MBP and Parallels or some such. The Retinas are at such a premium though, and the older versions seem so comparatively crappy in vertical resolution that it ma...

Well, I learned some things tonight. I checked again and was wrong in what I said about a new version for Linux. I believe my actual problem was that it's newer than I can use on my old VMware player and guest Linux OS. Sorry for the errors, there. Tonight, for some reason, the "Full" slid...

The old SMP software used to use all available threads, now it uses 1 less than the total available no matter what. FWIW you can still force it to use all cores with the --cpus=n (where n is the desired number of threads) command line argument. Thanks for the reply. I just lost my response to it an...

This thread, like many folders on TR's team, seems to have taken a vacation from folding. Howdy, everyone. RIP Linux It's best to let chkdsk finish. It leaves the partition in a much more confused state then when it started. Yeah, I was wrong about RIP Linux. Re: Windows 7 and NTFS vs. me

The auto repair wasn't what you wanted from WinRE. You needed to open up a command prompt and run chkdsk from that pre-boot environment. Honestly, I don't think that's gonna fix the issue. I feel like you should run a SMART check of the disk. I tried that this evening, and it first said my system d...

Re: Windows 7 and NTFS vs. me

ntfsprogs has ntfsfix. It's not a replacement for chkdsk, but it will at least clear the dirty bit letting Windows boot up. You could boot from the Windows 7 disc and run the recovery utilities that it provides, since you don't have another Windows system around. There are also the WD Data Lifeguar...

Re: Windows 7 and NTFS vs. me

IIRC the last time I hit this issue I fixed it by connecting the drive in question to another system as a data drive, and re-running the disk check from within Windows. That's the solution I'd use... if I still had another system running Win 7 around that I could easily pop it into. But I've gotten...

Windows 7 and NTFS vs. me

A long while back, more than a year ago now I believe, Windows 7 told me it wanted to check my Windows install drive. So I let it do so, since usually that meant something was screwed up by a hard lock & reset or other unusual event, which had happened a great deal when I first got the motherboa...
