Re: Xbox One X

Licensing requirements for xbox require support on xbone and xbox x. They've stated that for the foreseeable future all games on "xbox" platform must work on "xbox's." Yes, games must be compatible with the original XBO and can't be exclusive XBX, but if that was for my benefit,...

Re: Xbox One X

The fanboyism is amusing though, I hadn't seen that since the original x1/ps4 launch. I'm sure that Mark Cernys stupid butterfly analogies magically make the Pro a better console ;) Joking aside, how do you think they're going to manage the performance gap in multiplayer games? That's a large perfo...

Re: Goodbye Vega 56 at MSRP

Considering the short windows where a GPU is the best way to chew through cryptocurrency - before the specialized ASICs come out - I it might be AMD's best bet to cater to that fleeting market immediately. It seems like most miners will gladly pay launch-day prices, whether they end up making an act...

Re: Quick and dirty desk upgrade

I might also raid the scrap bin for a few spacers to put under the monitor mounts to help distribute the weight. It's hard to tell from the photo, but I suppose if the dark 3"-ish blobs directly under the monitors are bearing most/all of the weight, then that's probably a good idea. :) Extra p...

Re: Quick and dirty desk upgrade

Nice! A door is a cheap, tried-and-true method to create a large desk, and you get bonus points from The A-Team for improvising with materials at-hand. As an added benefit, access to the hollow core means easy installation of RGB LEDs. Just perforate the door in the desired pattern (top for eye cand...

Well I'm sure you can find a used VW for cheap  Hah! I would think so... :D I like the Golfs, some Jettas, and the CC, but VW's notorious reliability is a turn off. I do see Audi doing very well in Consumer Reports' current overall manufacturer ranking, so I can only assume they put more effor...

Re: EPA vs. FCA (Here we go again!)

Though the benefits of AWD to a driver whose mainly on the highway/chasing fuel economy makes little sense to me. I love the sure-footed grip of AWD, that's why. :) Barring ice, I can hardly make it slip even if I try. I can't vouch for reactive AWD that most manufacturers tend to use, but the full...

Re: EPA vs. FCA (Here we go again!)

AWD makes this all harder, though, because most AWD non-luxury cars are Subarus, and those are horrendously inefficient. Great post - really informative. :) As slowriot mentioned, Subaru has done a good job of closing the gap. Consumer Reports' highway testing of the 2017 Impreza put it at 41MPG. T...

Re: EPA vs. FCA (Here we go again!)

These hits are really a shame, in my opinion, whether they're caused by intentional shenanigans or regulations that are tilted in gasoline's favor. I want diesel engines to succeed. Nearly my whole commute is on the freeway and I'd really like diesel's highway efficiency, especially if I could get i...

Re: 80387 math coprocessors

If I recall, the DX models had x87 built-in. I was the (not so) proud user of a 386-SX 25 that my parents bought for me (starting with a whopping 2MB of RAM), and I was envious of the DX models. Though I don't know how tangible the difference would have been.

[...] That said, I'm not a console gamer. Last one I had was an N64, and I wouldn't want a Nintendo Switch even if someone gave it to me.  Nintendo's console is arguably the best console for a PC gamer to own (if you have any interest in consoles at all, of course) because of the exclusives you can...

Re: Nintendo Switch

Not even parity. You can get a 500GB PS4 with Uncharted 4 for $259 on Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, etc. They're actually more expensive because of the stupid display and portability nonsense. That's true. I was being generous and went with what I think is the current MSRP. But these days you really h...

Re: Nintendo Switch

I think they are going have an uphill battle if they intend on selling the unit at $299. It is the same price tag as 500GiB PS4 Slim and Xbox One S. Nintendo IP franchises alone aren't going to convince the masses to jump onto the bandwagon. Uphill battle, indeed. Price parity along with limited th...

Re: Wasson: Zen matching Broadwell IPC

Engineering samples are typically clocked low, as they really only need to provide motherboard manufacturers and the like a way to ensure compatibility. AMD undoubtedly has internal samples running at higher clocks, but there's no need to send them out to leakers. If these samples we're somehow the ...

A question regarding your build - do either of the following scenarios apply to you? ⋅  You're in a Brewster's Millions situation and must spend a small fortune in order to gain access to a much larger fortune. ⋅  You're about to fake your own death and not only do you want to st...

I had the same thing happen yesterday. Some supposed random prize awarded to TR readers on Saturdays, from s3.amazonaws.com.

Not sure what adware could be on my phone. I keep the appload light and don't do silly things like torrent on my phone (unlike some of my coworkers)

I guess I'm late to the party, but for the sake of future forum searchers I definitely recommend Monoprice's tilt/swivel TV mount that I bought two of. Its product ID is 8587 and currently 95.55% of its 541 reviews are 5-stars (if I'm reading that right). It has a great heavy-duty feel and inspires ...

Re: Enter here for a chance to win a free Just Cause 2 license

The i7 in the first post pales in comparison to my first build! I wish I remembered all the details but it was 1996, I was 16 years old, and cobbled together a Pentium 75MHz that I overclocked to a whopping 100MHz. That was rounded-out with pitiful amounts of RAM and disk space, but I was moving up ...
