Re: Windows server 2016 moving to per core licence

I think that there has to be a more sensible way to license software than the "per core/cpu" model. Oracle has been doing this for years, and it was one of the reasons why the place that I used to work for had to look for alternatives. At first the logical alternative was Microsoft, but ev...

You can create a bootable USB or DVD on the same (or different) computer and use it to backup/restore.

Just throwing another option on the table, Oracle Application Express coupled with Oracle XE (eXpress Edition). Both are free, they come with certain limitations in terms of number of cpus and size of the database, but are vastly superior to Access. I think there's even a migration kit from Access t...

Re: Cooler Master Hyper TX3

I have one on my 3770k, very quiet, temps never go above 63C with a tiny overclock to 4ghz, at 100% running Prime64 for hours on end. I even added a second fan just in case and because I found it on sale, not really needed. The stock cooler would reach 90C in seconds, it was garbage.

Re: Replacing PSU on an old Dell

I replaced the PSU on a PC just like that a few months ago, I used a Corsair CX-430 because it was the cheapest I could find. The only problem I had, and this may just be this particular PC, was that it wouldn't power up until I installed a PCI card, anything, as if there wasn't enough draw or somet...

From what I can see, the dm4 has double the ram (8gb vs 4gb) and a larger hard drive (1tb vs 750gb).
I'm not sure what you mean by "3 or 4 days without shutting down". I imagine that you're not talking about battery life.

Re: On how people get rich...

It also helps if you're born a Kardashian. You can be as dumb as a doorknob, not work hard at anything for most of your life and still be rich. Plus, people (the networks) pay you to watch you waste money, so you continue to be rich even if you don't even try. So being born rich helps you be rich. I...

Re: Looking for a computer hardware store in New York

I finally went to NYC and saw the glass Apple store; judging by the lineup to get in and the people taking pictures I thought at first that it was some kind of a museum, or perhaps the Kardashians were in town  I couldn't find another store close to the hotel, I was hoping to find a MicroCenter...

Move the blu-ray burner to another port, it doesn't need to be on the sata6. It won't gain anything from it, it's too slow due to the mechanical nature of the burner.

Re: Is it possible to send a fax from All in One Printer wit

If the difference in price between an AIO printer with or without fax means that you may have to resign print quality over features, I'd say ditch the fax and buy one when you need it, and go for the unit that has the best printer. It's what you'll use most of the time, anyway. If you need a fax, yo...

Looking for a computer hardware store in New York

Hi,

I live in Canada and I'll be in New York for business in a few weeks. I usually buy from Newegg or some other local store like Canada Computers. What would be some of the best places to go for a new motherboard, processor, ssd, etc. in New York? Fry's or something like that?

Thanks!

Just in case you don't want to keep fiddling with your bios settings for ide/ahci, I suggest you boot one more time into XP (in IDE mode, of course) and install the AHCI drivers. Then change the bios setting back to AHCI. Here's a how-to but I'm sure there are many more if you google it. http://foru...

The back end is probably fine; the side fan is more towards the front of the case, which leaves about 2-2.5 in (5-7 cm) behind it, hopefully the Antec Kuhler can fit there.

Looking for cooler recommendation

Hi, I would like to replace my aging Athlon II X4 630 with a Phenom II X6 1100t. They're starting to disappear from the distribution channels so it's probably now or never. Anyway, I understand that the stock cooler is not good so I plan to replace it with something else. My budget in that regard wo...

I had the same problem with the drive preventing the machine from booting with another Seagate Goflex, a 1.5 Tb. The problem was that this time it was plugged into a server and getting into the server room was impossible until the next day, which meant an unplanned outage that made nobody happy. Too...

My experience is with Oracle but I imagine it would be similar to SQL server. I found Oracle on Vmware ESX to be sensibly slower than real metal, in particular memory and disk access. Of course I imagine that if you replace an old, dying server with a more powerful virtual server (in terms of number...

I got a Brother HL-2270dw Laser Printer, which is similar to the 2240 but with duplex plus wireless and wired network capabilities. We can print from any PC in the house that way. I'm stepping up my running game. Still doing the interval training bit where I run uphill and walk downhill, but I've added a gallon of water to my backpack.
