Re: New Ryzen build in a Fractal Nano S

The stupid thing doesn't have onboard graphics. So a 4C/8T Ryzen is beaten in IPC and overclockability by a 7700k AND the 7700k has onboard video,...... PLUS no one seems to give a damn about ITX in the AMD camp, I don't want some gimped out 'basic' X300 chip, I want full features. The whole thing i...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

Isn't the claimed 15% performance increase for Coffee Lake the same thing Intel said about Kaby Lake? I guess we'll just have to wait and see what changes there are(if any) to the architecture. The wiki page on coffee lake lists two stories at WCCFTech as sources, so..... yeah, I'm not going to rea...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

Interesting, yet another one of the reasons I won't consider Ryzen is how impractical it is for me as an ITX person, the lack of a gpu means more heat, noise and cost in a small case. Intel onboard is perfect for my needs and it's extremely possible Intel will be the first to make a 6 core CPU with...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

Dude, you're not helping here. Put the pitchfork away. The point is Ryzen doesn't suck. Obviously you've got your mind set on building an uber-PC. If component X doesn't measure up, because reasons, then don't buy it, but it still doesn't suck. For my part, since I also like miniITX machines, both ...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

Please don't bring fantasy into the thread, this is actual discussion about the new chip in August. If AMD can get to 4.7 and bring the ipc and being a GPU, then I might consider giving them airspace. RyZen IPC == Haswell IPC clock-for-clock. With less power and more cores. If Haswell-level perform...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

Ryzen's IPC is within 2-5% of Kaby Lake CPUs at the same or even slightly higher clocks. Untrue and it clocks quite poorly. I don't think Intel's upcoming 6-core Skylake/Kaby Lake x CPUs will go beyond 4.2-4.5GHz, it's a nice boost yes, but there's no way Intel will sell them for anything under $50...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

Interesting strategy, this is. Looks like they are bringing more cores to the mainstream and lower cores to the enthusiast platforms. I'm guessing that Coffee Lake will be a drop in clock speed and advertised as the value option for professionals and kaby lake-x will be clocked higher and advertise...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

I feel that what you actually need isn't necessarily a faster CPU, but a ton of RAM. Most of the background tabs would be halted (as of Chrome 57 background tabs are restricted to 1% CPU), so whatever slowdown you get is coming from swapping the contents back into memory when you tab back. If you g...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

And will probably cost way more then the Ryzen. Intel isn't known for being cheap. Cost more than the 6 core inferior Ryzen? Very likely. Cost more than the 8 core somewhat competitive Ryzen? Very unlikely. The 1800X costs more than a 7700k and the 1700x I (think?) does too. I won't deny, I think i...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

It's interesting when you think about it...AMD released their HEDT processors and cut-down ones first. Ryzen chips right now have lots of cores (all basically 2x4 core modules with some cut off), lots of cache, and no iGPU. Just a big chunk of silicon that is all CPU and no GPU. Later this year we'...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

I have used my PC with 24GB, more memory won't help, it was always exceeding 8GB memory free unless I fired up more than 1 VM. Really? You should *never* have free memory if things are working properly - do you mean 8 GB cached but available? More memory == more things cached in RAM rather than on ...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

Also, we're getting vastly off topic here, if it suits me or not is irrelevant, either Ryzen 8/16 @ 4ghz will suit me, or Coffee 6/12 @ 4.2ghz (or higher, presumably) will suit me. One of the 2 systems will beat my current one. I personally suspect if the Coffee Lake exceeds 4.5ghz and is otherwise...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

@OP Out of curiosity, what does your CPU tab look in task manager during regular use? You seem to want more cores, but are you actually getting significant usage across all 8 threads? Have you observed what happens to the resource monitors when you do *something* that you wish was more responsive? ...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

It's raw CPU performance, single and multi-threaded and memory bandwidth. But the fact remains that open tabs in the background are increasingly being allowed to do less and less by the two browsers you mention, to the point where, currently, they can do almost nothing. This trend is only going to ...

I want general snappyness, not just my browsers.
I want as fast as humanly possible Windows, absoloutely, ridiculously snappy.
Think: the first time you put an SSD in a PC - that kind of snappy.

What a typical post. "Your use case differs from mine, you're doing it wrong" Groan. For a start Chrome is vastly superior to Firefox with performance over 150 tabs, night and day difference (breaks my heart, I really don't like Chrome) I do lots of research - a heavy day is 300, I normal...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

I think Ryzen is an outdated design model to not include an IGP at all, but at least it seems to have made Intel shift some focus away from that area. Let's face it, Intel IGP has been more than adequate for non-dGPU machines since.....Ivy Bridge? We don't need half the die area dedicated to IGP, g...

man the x299 is zero interest to me, just like Ryzen then. The IGP in intel has been good since the 4xxx series. If you don't play games, it's more than enough for windows / youtube. I guess the Kaby-X must be a full 5ghz stock, right? If the GPU is ripped out. The HEDT systems were never targeted ...

Re: Coffee Lake 6 core, this August with z370 chipsets?

This is Intel, with rumors that the Kaby-lake X has no IGP and TDP of 112W, it will likely be a high Hz part, and of course will be tied to X299/LGA 2066 so they can charge $$$$ for it. Not gonna replace the i7k, they are adding a new $500 tier. What do you think they've been holding back for all t...

Re: Newfound Opinion: Ryzen is the second coming of K7

Speaking of production and many-core workloads, it's kind of funny that AMD has managed to make a better "Bulldozer" than Bulldozer, while primarily aiming for something else. Good thing this Bulldozer Mk. II is getting 85-90% of the single threaded performance of the recent Intel CPUs; F...

Re: Newfound Opinion: Ryzen is the second coming of K7

Not even slightly the case. The processor needs to be significantly cheaper to offer what the K7 did. When I purchased a K7, I did so because it was 80% the performance of an Intel P4 setup at only 50% of the cost, maybe 60% at most. /Furthermore/ back in those days, it was $1200 AUD to build the Pe...

Re: Synology 1815+ or other?

I built a FreeNAS machine after finding Synology is simply too expensive. FreeNAS9 is about as good as a Synology box but FreeNAS10 - may well become very very good as a media server / network file server. When your synology machine dies (and it does happen!) it's a frantic hunt to find the same mod...
