Re: Do/did you reapply thermal paste in laptops/notebooks?

At work I redid the thermal paste on a basically new Dell Precision 5520 that was throttling under load. All I had on hand was Arctic Silver 5 (would have ideally used something non-conductive) but it seemed to help quite a bit. That model is very Macbook-like, just a few Torx screws (and a couple o...

Don't forget the 100TB ExaDrive!

https://nimbusdata.com/products/exadriv ... able-ssds/

It's 3.5" instead of 2.5" but still pretty intriguing. And I'm sure it's got a big fat price tag to match its big fat form factor.

Re: why monitors have better picture than tvs?

PC monitors don't have better quality than modern TVs. Not anymore, anyway. Jaggy and aliased sounds potentially like bad settings, unless it's a bad generic model. Check that you're feeding the TV its native resolution, turn off all post-processing options, turn off zoom/scaling/overscan. I would ...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

I'm mostly just a lurker around here but wanted to share possibly the strangest computer related issue that I faced yesterday: I imaged a Dell Latitude E7440 using our standard Windows 10 image at work and noticed that the performance was very sluggish. In the Task Manager I noticed that the CPU was...

Re: Headset for Gaming

I recently got a Logitech G230 headset and have been really happy with it. It has regular 3.5mm plugs but I did end up buying a cheapo SYBA USB sound card since my motherboard's audio is horrendous. Other than that they've been great! Nice and comfy and sound perfectly fine. The braided cable is cra...

Have you just tried power cycling the computer (shut down, unplug, hold power button for 30 seconds, power back on)? I've fixed the "USB device not recognized" issue that way a few times before.

Upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro?

I have a customer who wants to use Remote Desktop to access his office PC from home. It came with Windows 8.1 and was upgraded to Windows 10 Home which does not allow incoming RDP connections. There is allegedly a Windows 10 Pro Pack for $99 but I can't find it available for purchase anywhere. Has a...

Re: Consumer SSDs in Servers

I'm hoping that at some point, they'll make a "budget enterprise" SSD, targeted at small biz servers. Your PowerEdge T110 II, T320, HP Proliant ML, etc. We'll see where that goes. After all, platter drives have gone a middle ground, like the Western Digital RE nearline-SAS drives. It will...

Get a good quality 250GBish SSD and use the old 640GB mechanical for stuff you won't need to access a lot or doesn't really need fast storage (movies, music, etc.) and keep games, programs, anything you're working on right now on the SSD. It's nice to have a second drive for nothing else than backu...

Re: Faster RAM for new SSD

If you're buying this to REPLACE your current RAM...not in a million years. Do you have a 2x4GB 1333MHz kit now? If you're buying it to ADD to your current 8GB (or plan on transplanting the existing stuff to another system), then the price is fine (even though it'll run at 1333MHz alongside your ex...

Re: Faster RAM for new SSD

I'm not concerned about the RAM. Just get the SSD. Do it. Come on, now, do it. :) I tossed a 120GB M500 (which is on the slower end for writes) in a Core 2 laptop (Penryn), choked by the chipset's SATA II controller. And with DDR2 800MHz in the system. Still led to some nice improvements. Latency w...

Re: Faster RAM for new SSD

From a speed standpoint, it's not worth the money stepping up from 1333MHz to 1600MHz. However , you can certainly buy the kit you linked to ADD 8GB of RAM to your system. The system will run all sticks at the lowest common denominator (aka 1333MHz, which that 1600MHz kit will support) but who care...
