Re: Remember when.......(decade in review)

Truth be told, I used to be able to afford bleeding edge technology a decade ago and thus more interest and questions. That was what made this site/forum daily reading (if only as a lurker) for me. It seems that tech is now targeting deeper pockets (or my pockets have collected too much lint and are...

Re: dymt reloaded

Eh, I really loathe office politics BS. So my code has been running without any errors or change for over two years starts throwing SQL 'timeout' warnings and the DBA(s) decide that the fault lies with my app and wants me to 'fix' it. The DBA supervisor goes to my supervisor and tells him that my co...

Calculus drove me insane because I had a hard time visualizing it or relating it to physical phenomena. OTOH, software just seems to come naturally. I sometimes even write and debug code in my head while I'm in the shower. I guess it's just one more indication that everyone's brain is wired a littl...

Re: Driving in winter

I just did Olympia to San Jose this July in a little under seventeen hours. Just stops for gas and one break. Going around Portland still added an hour (maybe a little more) and hunting down ethanol-free gas maybe added another. I missed the extra oomph when I had to buy the 10% but I like being abl...

Re: Driving in winter

That said, does engine braking help stability over the brake pedal because it's using the front 2 tires, not all 4? It has more to do with the fact that engine braking will never lock your wheels unless you some how hydra-lock your engine. So, like ABS, you have more control of the vehicle while th...

Re: Driving in winter

Recap: All-weather tires instead of snow because you will be driving through south OR and in SF. Downshift and use engine braking to control speed and not the brake pedal. Don't worry about what the drivers around you are doing/telling you and drive your car. Let the hurried by you as quickly as pos...

It would be nice if appraisers/assessors had to put their money where their mouths are and cut the party a check for the amount of the assessment should the party opts for that. Re: Anyone repair anything today?

Heh, good read. I like a bit of the technical stuff in there. Do audio engineers have a preferred environment that they train for, like studio versus open air? Do you become specialized in the kind of equipment you work with? I generally beg out of studio work in photography and have lenses best fit...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

For some clarity...maybe: the 'staggered' part is achieved by having two 2x4 framing on both sides of the 2x6 ends. The spacing is actually half the distance for the normal 2x6 build except that every other 2x4 is faced flush with the opposite side of the 2x6 ends, thus isolating the wall on one sid...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

Staggered 2x4 walls are the same thickness as 2x6 studded walls. The 2x4 allows for a two inch gap between the opposing walls except at the top and bottom caps, which are usually 2x6s. They are generally spec'd for sound abatement though in interior walls though it could be used for an extra measure...

They offer the standard drawings to meet code here too but then, in order to get it inspected and 'legal', you have to purchase a permit. When deciding on the fees and taxes, they ask you what it will cost in materials and labor and then tell you that your number is too low and that it would cost 't...

Re: When Curbs Attack

Oh yeah...when you lose traction, stay off the brakes and steer into the slide to regain traction. It is kind of counter-intuitive, like counter-steering, but if you are already sliding, there is no friction to make the brakes work anyways. And since you lost road contact over a bump, sounds like ti...

That will buff right out...! :) You will want a professional buffer and that will set you back some $5-6K. :( If you don't care for the superficial part(s) of the car and just want mechanicals, have it taken to a garage to repair the suspension instead of a body shop. Why no love for the Mitsubishis? They have a great warranty & have a lot less troubles than most cars in their class. IMO, the Evo is a much better car than the WRX. Mostly because of reliability...and some design issues. I don't know who thought it was a good idea to locate the fuel pump on th...
