Re: Help picking a monitor!

Just wanted to update everyone, especially after all the help. Got it today and love it! Had a little bit of trouble getting to max resolution on my graphics card (560 Ti) but got it in the end. Am using an HDMI cable currently! The only complaint I got was from my GF saying I should have discussed ...

Re: Help picking a monitor!

I would say ~$500 max. But if it is absolutely awesome, I could make an exception.

I think $300 is the sweet spot though.

Help picking a monitor!

So I got my tax return in Amazon credit and would love to get a new monitor, just am having a hard time navigating the myriad of choices. My current one is so sad I am afraid to share it with you guys, 1440x900 19' Samsung from 2006. I would really like a monitor with speakers/headphone jack as my d...

Re: Thoughts on mixing memory brands?

Your best bet is usually to match the size, brand and model of memory. Failing that, you'll probably end up running at the speed of your slowest memory. Your existing 2x4 GiB of Crucial memory runs at 1866, 9-9-9-27 at 1.5 V. The 2x8 GiB of G.Skill memory that you linked runs at 1600, 9-9-9-?? at 1...

Thoughts on mixing memory brands?

Hi All, I built a new PC about 6-8 months ago and went with 8GB (2x4GB) of memory and am thinking about upgrading to 16GB with all the Black Friday deals. Currently I have: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1866 (PC3 14900) Desktop Memory Model BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT1TX0 Fr...

Which HDD should house my BitTorrent folder?

I have a C (256 SSD) and D (4 TB mechanical). Right now, I have my Download folder on my SSD and then copy the files over to my D drive. I do this because I feel the C drive is always being used (OS, etc.) and downloading/uploading would keep the mechanical drive in use 24/7 this burning it out fast...

Re: Approve of this build?

I went with:
Corsair 450D
Corsair HX650
Asus Gryphon Z97
8GB 2x4 PC3-14900 Crucial Ballistix BLT2KIT4G3D1869DT1TX0 (DDR3-1866, 9-9-9-27, 1.5 V)
Crucial MX100 256GB

Still going to figure out between WD Red and Green for the HDD but will do that later.

Thanks again!

What memory speed do you think I should get? Why are Lian-Lis so hard to find/buy in the US?

I am looking at building a new PC and would love a Lian-Li. I am having trouble finding a trustworthy merchant with them in stock.

Any ideas why this is? Know of any other ways to get Lian-Lis?

Small case for new build (microATX)

I need help deciding a case for my new build. I can't make a decision and it is blocking me from buying the rest of the parts (mobo, psu, cpu cooler) since the case will determine which sizes I can buy. I am stuck on finding a case which match my 2 criteria; good looking (IMO Lian-Li) and small but ...

Re: Reasonable temperature for server in closet

Sorry, I was not as clear as I should have been. This machine will be replacing the HTPC and NAS, I am getting rid of those. So it will be this machine, cable modem and router in this closet. It is a rental house so I do not know how much I can mod the ventilation, but one thing comes to mind, the h...

Reasonable temperature for server in closet

Hey Guys, Finally started building a new desktop server. So far I have an i7-4770k, GTX 560 Ti an 1 3TB WD Red. I am still buying the rest of the parts (mobo/case/psu, cpu fan?) But I wanted to post and get some opinions about cooling first. This will be running 24/7 in the corner of a relatively sm...

Sorry, I was mistaken, he UPGRADED to the 770, the card is actually a 560 Ti (2GB). Haven't discussed prices yet but it does seem a bit old, still think its worth it?

Re: Thoughts on buying used graphics card?

Thanks for replying, it would prob be around $100-150 for the card, which is around 50% off. How does the ASIC value exactly link to a "better condition" graphics card? I was looking at this: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/27079-what-is-asic-quality/ Pretty much looks like voltage lea...

Thoughts on buying used graphics card?

Hey guys, My coworker is selling a used nVidia GTX 770 which he used for a year then upgraded. He said he did not mine any cryptocurrencies on it and just played games/usual stuff. It would probably save me probably around $100ish since I am doing a full new build right now. Do you have any good/bad...

Re: New HTPC Build questions

The problem is that I want to run a website, ftp, usenet listener and maybe others and to my knowledge XBMC doesn't have those things, Windows does. So my reasoning is that I can upgrade the hardware and get the best of both worlds. Maybe I can figure out a dual boot option. Might be worth a shot. A...

Re: New HTPC Build questions

Right now Windows 7 but I will probably upgrade to 8.1.

Locally vs LAN makes no difference, I think it is the ZBOX's lack of GPU (CUDA) which is limiting it.

New HTPC Build questions

My current HTPC (Zotac ZBOX HD-ID11) isn't cutting it anymore, it stutters when playing large 720p mkvs and even worse on large 1080ps. I have a NAS (Dlink DNS-321) with 2HDD (3.5TB) which has been good but is also needs an upgrade (slow transfer speeds, only 2 HDD slots, very bad UI, limited functi...

Thanks for the quick replies! My main usage for this box is that I remote from work and browse and dl etc. It also is used as an IIS/SQL Server site which a few friends use. Home Server / HTPC build i3 vs i5

Hi guys, I wanted some opinions on my setup for my house. Thanks! Currently I have a Dlink DNS-321 NAS (2 Bay) and a Zbox HD-ID11 for my HTPC. I stream movies to the Zbox which is hooked up to the TV. Sadly, I am running out of space on the NAS (4tb) and want to take this upgrade opportunity to crea...
