Re: About that Polaris Power Issue

Me neither. This is just a storm in a teacup, there will be updates next week and in a couple of more this will be forgotten by everybody except the rabid fanboys. Put me in this group, too. Ditto... Especially since not all cards reviewed had this problem (e.g. HardOCP). It does sound like its a m...

Re: About that Polaris Power Issue

What has AMD said about it AMD marketing guy Rob Hallock said this: We will have more on this topic soon as we investigate, but it's worth reminding people that only a very small number of hundreds of RX 480 reviews worldwide encountered this issue. Clearly that makes it aberrant, rather than the r...

Re: Which game should I play first?

I'm also considering getting some of the DLC before I continue playing. Any recommendations? Well you could try one of those "NPC Companion Character" DLCs, but they are to be quite expensive most of the time, and especially without a saving/loading function they tend to screw up the game...

Re: Which game should I play first?

I vote game of Life, and shoveling 1 foot of snow :D well that's what I'm going to play ;) Meh. I'm waiting until the developer has had some time to patch it a bit more. I'm hoping for a save/load feature, or at least a checkpoint system. Sure, the current mandatory Ironman mode adds some challenge...

Re: Another Witcher 3 Giveaway!

Somewhat Simplified: When you put a magnet into a magnetic field it will tend to align itself along the magnetic field. This is how a compass works, but it is also used in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Hydrogen nuclei (protons) act as tiny magnets, so when you put them into a realllllly strong m...

Re: External video input to a window?

Do you specifically want the picture inside a window on the desktop computer, or would it be sufficient to have both displays showing up on the monitor in some other way? Some monitors natively support Picture-in-Picture, and if all you want to do is show two different video inputs at the same time,...

Re: Excel wizards handy?

One thing that I noticed when trying this:
When you do the reverse lookup, if you try to select a cell in the pivot table by clicking on it, it'll give you a GETPIVOTDATA(...) reference in your formula. I just ignored this, and instead manually entered the cell name. Seems to work just fine that way.

Re: Excel wizards handy?

This is an ugly hack, but at least it seems to yield the desired results. First, "translate" the values into numbers by creating two columns holding the possible value names and corresponding numeric values, and use =vlookup to create a new area where the numeric values are shown instead o...

Re: My how time flies

What annoys me is when Bones does anything related to computer technology. Anything. Anything . It's painful to watch them get it so, so wrong. Like terribly wrong. Like a Marmoset hopped up on PCP and Bath Salts would do a better job at portraying computing technology. You could replace "comp...

Re: My how time flies

Even STNG starts to look pretty dated in some episodes. Another good one to watch again is Lawnmower Man. I remember thinking "OMG look at those graphics" back then. And speaking of dated CRT's....... why the f*** does NCIS still have CRT's on Gibbs and crews desks? Because it's written b...

Re: Steam Summer sale is on!

Is L.A. Noire worth it? (I am still bummed that RDR isnt available for PC) For 5 bucks, I think so. No fair - it's €7.5 euro-side. Not only the €=$ conversion this time, but an even higher price (84% higher total cost). I've put it on my mental might-want-to-get-this-when-it-reaches-€5-list though.

Re: VHDL?

As a side note, the VHDL texts I read while coming up the learning curve taught me the language constructs, but did not do a very good job of preparing me for the reality of writing code for synthesis. There's a lot of stuff that'll compile and simulate just fine, but becomes problematic when you t...

Re: VHDL?

You might try Digital Design and Computer Architecture by Harris & Harris. While I don't know the textbook personally, it's the current assigned text in the course I took some years ago, and the description sounds like it's close to what you're looking for. You'll note that they don't introduce...

Re: Is Skyrim DRM free?

Ok, try to install the game on a laptop, while travelling on a train. That's the most bizarrely limited scenario I've ever heard of. No, it's not. Some people have jobs on a train, or may have jobs that require them to travel by train. Not cool to marginalize people man, that's a legitimate issue. ...

Agreed. If this is the reason that you don't like Steam (because it limits your gaming options during rail travel), then you probably don't have a very strong case. Limits your game *installation* options during rail travel. :) (and in that case having a purely physical copy is only a benefit if yo...

Re: Is Skyrim DRM free?

I don't agree with Madman that having games on Steam is "without any benefits whatsoever", but there *are* also drawbacks, and some might be more concerned about this than others. All the games I brought are: pop the DVD in, autorun runs setup, asks for install key, 2 min, the game is rea...

Actually, yes, that's a good question. If I can sell the Steam DX:HR version, I could just order the retail/boxed version. That wouldn't gain you anything (unless you want a DVD that you can toss at people, or really like boxes). Like Skyrim, DX:HR is a Steamworks game, and thus requires Steam. In ...

Another solution might be to make a regular .bat file with the line: explorer <network path> , where <network path> is the network location you want to open up (e.g. "explorer \\server\directory"). Normally that'll open up the location in question. Not sure if the \/ situation will mess wi...

Re: Create Invalid Shortcut : How to do it?

Have you tried using a shortcut editor such as this one?
http://www.gdgsoft.com/pb/pbhelp/help150.html

Otherwise you might be able to make a shortcut to a location you actually have access to, and edit the resulting shortcut file manually with a hex editor to change the location.
