Well, I ended up getting one of the Gateways :) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834101087 I will miss that extra 1 yr. of warranty I would have had with the Compaq but with the Compaq, I'd have to wait until at least Oct. 10th before they could ship it out and that's cutting it...

I've been reading up on Istanbul and reading about the various tourist scams. Seems like the big one is where a group of guys will try to convince you to have a drink with them... at a bar of their choosing... and end up hitting you with a huge bill and threatening you until you pay up. Thanks for t...

One more question... are most laptop power supplies capable of handling 220V? I know I'll need a plug adapter but are the units capable of handling it? Just wondering if I should invest in a 220V->110V transformer or if a plug adapter is sufficient.

That is good advice re: the memory. In the case of the Compaq, I can save $10 by specing it out for 512MB instead of 1GB. Then put that $10 towards 2 1GB sticks of RAM (~$65 at Newegg). I will be there for 3 weeks so I'll have 2 full weekends to look around. Hopefully I can con one of the people I a...

Rec. for a cheap (< $500) laptop

I'm going on a business trip to Istanbul for a few weeks and am looking for a cheap laptop to use in my hotel and on the plane. My main uses will be web surfing, playing DVDs, and general productivity apps (OpenOffice, etc.). Ability to play the latest games is not that important though I might play...

There is a phpBB mod to allow each user to turn on and off avatars and signatures. I've got it on my forum and it works pretty well. I also saw a mod that would use Javascript to enforce avatar size limits, even for non-locally hosted avatars. IMO I think avatars are far less annoying than signature...

I used to use KPF heavily as well. I actually preferred it's predecessor, the free version of Tiny Personal Firewall, more but KPF wasn't too bad a replacement.

Right now I use the SP2 firewall combined with a broadband router. I don't do anything exotic and this fits my needs for now.

You're right, there is a place for a 120mm fan there. However, there isn't enough clearance around the hole for the radiator (the recessed portion for the expansion slots interferes). A completely external solution like yours should decreases temps in the case a little bit too, so that's always a bo...

Anyone using a ThermalTake Big Water cooling system?

If so, what case are you guys using? I have an Antec Sonata and there isn't room to mount the radiator inside the case. I tried doing it outside the case but couldn't route the hoses from the back to inside the case without kinking them (unless I made them really long but then that required too much...

Regedit can only view and export from the registry of the active Windows installation. It can't open "offline" registry files from another installation. There is an "Import" option but that can only import the entire .DAT file and overwrite everything that is there already which doesn't sound like a...

How to view a registry file?

Anyone know of a free registry program that can open registry .DAT files directly (for example to view the registry information for a Windows installation on a different drive) to view them and export data out of them? The standard regedit.exe does not have this capability. I'm trying to pull out so...

I've been seeing this on Windows 2000. I can't remember if my XP machine at home has this behaviour since I'm rarely running enough programs to see it. I believe the DivX times are encoding the video in a loop, which is how they could get 470 minutes. Same thing with the LAME and RAR tests. The only way to trade karma for meat directly is by looking to see if there are meat based items in the stash (i.e. meat paste, meat stacks, etc.). You can trade those 1 for 1 since th autosell price of those is equal to their karma cost. If there are not any meat items in the stash though, you're o...
