This makes me much less likely on getting a freesync2 monitor. I'll wait a little longer before pulling the trigger.

To put this in perspective for most people. My r9fury and heavily overclocked 4930k pulls about 500 at the wall. I'm talking about cpu burn and kombuster at the same time.

Re: Watercooling with an aquarium chiller

I'm certain some of the bigger aquarium chillers on the market would work. However condensation + heat + power usage makes them impractical. If you did use one, you would want to remove the radiators. Most chillers are designed to bring down the temperature and then turn off till they are needed aga...

Tough to say what's going on here, but higher score with 2 cores disabled could be an indication that the benchmark is running into contention for L3 cache (and turning off one core per CCX reduces some of that pressure), or that cache coherency overhead between the cores in a CCX is coming into pl...

Re: SATA SSD vs NVMe SSD (similar boot and load times)

Most people have pointed this out, most loading is cpu limited.  In my simple testing some operations are so CPU limited that the difference between quad channel memory @2133 and my intel aic 1.2TB is insignificant in day to day operations.  I felt the same way with the 950 pro, so I assume the 960 ...

I owned a 950 pro before I got the intel 750 aic.  The 950 pro is a wonderful nvme drive, but totally suffers from overheating.  The article above explains why the temperature from the sensor differed than burning finger temperature. The 950 pro was in 2 configs on my desktop.  The first config was ...

Yea, I'm not impressed with the current choices.  I like how m2 now has reasonable ssd drive capacities, but they are physically limiting on the board.  Off board choices are just ugly.  I ended up getting a pcie aic 750 for my primary drive.

Doesn't seem to be well optimized for Windows.  When I ran it, the single core test ran way below max cpu core speed.  I ended up with 3400 or 3600 on the single core score test.  I reran (forcing processor to be run @ full speed and ended up with 4300 on single core).

And there you have it... It's a decent card and priced right. Now just wait for a sale. Yea, it's a decent card. If you didn't have anything as fast a r290. Unless you need the features or power saving, it's a minor bump. Considering I paid 220 or 230 in Jan of last year, it's a meh. (yes the card ...

Without more benchmarks, it's hard to say. If you do the tflops/dollar on the radeon series it's much more in line with what your talking about.

Definitely get an aftermarket CPU cooler... You dont want to deal with boxed intel blender It's not a good cooler, but it's OK as long as it's not under heavy load for longer durations. Here is a good air cooler that chischis pointed out in the comments section of the TR guide: http://www.si...

Re: New Build Computer Freezing

Most of the time my builds have been unstable because of ram. So the first thing I would do is pull one of the modules. The second is make sure it's at the min memory voltage and add just a bit of extra voltage. Normally .005 or .010 is enough to make a difference. Example ram dd3 stock 1.5 volt ram...

I paid 220 for my r290. Unless an rx480 does better in actual games, it would be a hard sell (unless I handmedown the 290 into a different pc). My card got 14 444 at default clocks if anyone is wondering. I'll wait until I see reviews on it.

I haven't repaired anything this weekend (manual labor wise), but I did get my old desktop back from my brother. Turns out he hasn't been using it for the last couple years.
