Re: Has anybody here made a purchase with Bitcoin?

I mined some about 18 months ago using Nicehash when the bubble was forming and have spent it over the course of the last year on various things - mostly from Newegg via Bitpay (which was an annoying extra step) but I also got some giftcards through eGifter and some amazon cards through Bitpay. Over...

Re: M.2 NVMe adapter card for W7(?)

My experience with these things has been more motherboard support dependent than OS. I don't think those cards do much more than simply change the form factor of the pcie lanes to m.2. I'm going to wager a guess that you won't be able to boot from the drive because of Bios support or lack thereof. M...

Re: A good Wireless Router under $100?

I'll diverge a little from the other recommendations. I've just recently setup my house with three Asus RT-68 routers using their AiMesh solution and I've got to say I'm pretty happy with it. My networking has varied over the years from single WRT-54G running DDWRT to multiple random access points t...

Re: Remote access to an outbuilding

The fact you cannot see the home AP signal or the SR600 signal inside the shop tells me that you're going to need to get inside the shop over an ethernet wire to another device inside that will create another wireless network for you - as mentioned before you can name it the same and the same securi...

Re: Remote access to an outbuilding

I have reset all the devices, both by unplugging them and using the reset buttons (as I was directed by the tech support). It's not clear to me if you're just not saying it or you're not doing it, but are you going into the configuration on either device - the 600 or 300 - and configuring them for ...

I also have an Amped Wireless SR600EX Pro Range Extender/Smart Repeater that I had mounted on the outside of my steel building, and that fed to the SR300 Smart Repeater inside the building. Tech support says that unit is defective. I missed this initially - are you able to connect the SR600EX to yo...

Re: Remote access to an outbuilding

Maybe I'm misunderstanding things or grossly over simplifying things here, but if you have a good/strong wifi signal on your laptop outside your shop you're already getting a good signal to the outside of the building, your challenge is just getting that signal to "jump" through the metal ...

Re: Slow NVME SSD write speeds on Aero 15x

Update to the situation - despite the great specs of the machine and what I knew its potential could/should be it wasn't feeling "right" to me. There were two potential culprits in my mind - lack of dual-channel memory caused by the single 16GB stick and that SSD. For future reference - DR...

Good news (he says apprehensively) - Gigabyte support suggested that I try restoring the machine using the built in utility (press F9 on startup). The other alternative was to either return to Newegg and hope for the best or put my own drive in. So, despite my apprehension that it would possibly mak...

Re: Slow NVME SSD write speeds on Aero 15x

I've come to expect that any computer I buy with an SSD is going to be about the worst/cheapest SSD you can find so that the manufacturer can keep the price tag as low as possible. For that reason, I usually just buy the model with the smallest SSD (or none at all) figuring I can do much better buy...

Re: Slow NVME SSD write speeds on Aero 15x

My money's on this being a "you saturated the SLC write cache" issue, possibly combined with thermal throttling. If the driver is really as old as you say, lack of TRIM support could eventually come into play, making things even worse. I'm really hoping this windows update that is taking ...

Re: Slow NVME SSD write speeds on Aero 15x

You have the 512 GB drive, right? It shouldn't be running out of cache. Are you running Crystaldiskmark tests sequentially? Some NVMe drives can get hot and throttle towards the end. do you get the same result if you run the sequential write test in isolation? Yes, it's a 512 drive. Right now it's ...

Re: Slow NVME SSD write speeds on Aero 15x

Thanks guys - that's what I was afraid of. I've pretty much been writing to the drive constantly since I got the machine so that makes sense. I'll let it "rest" for a bit and see if that fixes things. That's pretty disappointing in a $2k machine when all the review units appear to have had...

Hello gerbils The other day I splurged on the Aero 15x that was listed on the deals as I was in need of a laptop for upcoming travel and the combination of size and features won me over. Re: Old camera connection - how to connect? What's missing?

I wonder if that other connection to the camera is a power zoom. The lens is labelled as 3.5~9MM. It certainly appears that the cameras are powered by mains vs. a power adapter to maybe those other boards and cords were for zoom control? They certainly appear to be around 18GA and intended for low v...

If this is an exercise in getting some old hardware working again, I can see how this is a fun exercise. Re: Question about a NVMe SSD and shared PCI-E lanes

I don’t suppose that PCI-E slot adapter would change how the SSD was seen by the BIOS and for booting, would it? In my experience using a x4 pcie adapter shows the m.2 drive to the pc the same way using the m.2 slot on the board does. I had a similar issue where I needed to use 5 sata ports and my ...

PSU - Even though that is a quality unit and wattage should be enough, sometimes they just go bad. I would probably get another one in there if you have a spare to both test that for sure is the problem as well as protect the rest of your system from the hard shutdowns. I had that exact same thing o...

OK I spec together a build for under $500 and the 1200 is just a placeholder for the 2200G. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rGcGm8 I know almost nothing about compatibility but I'm guessing these are going to be AM4 socket processors. UPS batteries need to be replaced every 3-5 years. The tone of your post gives the impression that you're expecting them to last forever. 5 years is really pushing it for a server UPS, and your 10 year old home unit is just a surge protector right now. You're not wrong - I don't feel like I didn't ...

I came into the office this morning and was greeted by an incessant beeping from the uninterruptible power supply in my server room. It is an APC Back-UPS ES 750 and it has been happily serving at its post for 5 years or so. This isn't the first UPS I've had the batteries go bad in, I have another A...
