Re: Bizarre issue regarding Internet downloads, possibly mal

Just because you don't like it, it doesn't stop plenty of other people using the acronym. Just because you like it, it does not mean you can impose on others saying that "plenty are using" the wrong acronym. Or those "plenty of other people" all living some Bizarro world that on...

Re: Bizarre issue regarding Internet downloads, possibly mal

Just because you don't like it, it doesn't stop plenty of other people using the acronym. Back to the problem though, it's odd that there is an IE security setting that produces almost exactly the same behaviour, but it's not the cause of the problem on this laptop, at least, it doesn't seem to be. ...

Bizarre issue regarding Internet downloads, possibly malware

A customer's computer has a recent history of malware, and I'm the second person to have looked at it recently, so the symptom I'm about to describe could be caused by malware, but I haven't seen anything like it before. Both Firefox and IE will allow me to start downloading an exe file and seemingl...

So presumably if I buy a case that needs a brick PSU, it will come with it? Does that case have the standard ATX connectors on the inside?

Re: Movies we've all seen???

Though I like some of his movies, I can't shake the feeling that Tarantino goes for what I consider b-movie productions because a) he simply can't do better and b) he can get away with it by saying that was what he was aiming for. IE, everything's an homage to some exploitation genre (ok, not every...

Re: Trusteer Rapport - snake oil?

Initially I removed Rapport every time I saw it because as far as I knew, all it did was what most modern browsers do, provide simple protection against phishing sites (and it slows the machine's startup time down). Then allegedly it specifically detects banking trojans as well, and I thought that a...

Re: Weird Computer SLOWdown

I wonder if Win7 has a better tolerance for HDD weirdness. I'm surprised that there wasn't anything in the system log though, I would have expected a timeout/parity error or two. In hindsight it would have been good to know whether the previous installs had anything in those logs. I wonder if differ...

Brick PSU - does it use the standard ATX power connectors as well or something laptop-ish? Does it connect straight to the motherboard?

An atypical Tarantino film is Jackie Brown. I like most of his, Jackie Brown too, but Jackie Brown has an entirely different pace, and IIRC no blood, guts or sex.

Re: Considering replacing my P3-866 server with Atom rig

Thanks for the responses. I'm 99% decided to go for an AMD build because I want this machine to do decent video playback, which will steadily become more demanding over time. Two things I'm pondering, largely down to a choice of two boards: A Zotac or a Sapphire board? http://www.cclonline.com/produ...

Re: Considering replacing my P3-866 server with Atom rig

I finally checked how much power my server is using - 50W idle (70W load, but it is rarely under much load). Based on some guestimates of unit prices (Nov 2010 - for some reason I can't find a recent bill) I'm spending £46 per year on my server. It is making more than that in revenue, so that doesn'...

Re: Weird Computer SLOWdown

Interesting. I can't think of any scenarios like that I've encountered before, usually PSU issues are either 'no boot', 'under load' or 'on for a period of time', and either show as freezes, shutdowns or reboots. But, if it works, it works. I can't explain it.

And lose Adobe Reader / Java / anything else that plugs into a browser if they're not required. There are plenty of free alternatives to Adobe Reader (I use Foxit Reader), I very rarely encounter customers who actually use Java for anything.

Re: New build

Aside from what socket/board it can go into, I wish my suppliers would send me free processors :) All I've got so far for free (intentionally anyway) was some laptop bag padlocks, an anti-virus licence for eTrust, an ethernet-over-USB adapter... I think that's it.

Aside from my feelings about the definition of a firewall being altered to suit whoever is selling the solution... I would be surprised if a software solution will result in all / almost all undesirable executables being blocked without some false-positives occurring. I'm not a parent yet, and obvio...

Ok, from the top :) AFAIK AM3+ will accept AM3 CPUs, I believe that's a generally accepted fact. However Asus are claiming that some of their AMD 8-series AM3 boards will accept AM3+ CPUs. What I was saying was, assuming that AM3+ CPUs don't work in any AM3 boards, then the old AMD advantage of stic...

Re: Building a budget PC

Windows 7 aggressively preloads programs (and data? not so sure) into RAM when the disk is idle and there's RAM to spare. In contrast to caching, this can speed up the first time you run a program after a reboot. Yes, that's very nice, but if it's using RAM then it can be tracked. My point is, I se...

Not sure why you would get information from a manufacturer's site- that's worse than retail, which is far worse than web retail. Try Scan? Err, the specs on the board? I can't remember ever finding board specs on the manufacturer's website to be wrong, but plenty of times on scan.co.uk/CCL/a.n.othe...

leaking news of AM3+ What leaking news? That it is going to be compatible, or that it is not going to be compatible? Right now I don't see any solid confirmation as to which is which. There is always "leaking news" of something in the horizon, GPUs in particular a prime example. You think...
