Re: Accessing Linux Applications From Within MS Windows

There is a POSIX compatibility layer which might work for some apps. And it's also available on Win Pro versions if I'm not mistaken.

Never tried it though...

Does anyone know a good checklist for backing up Windows?

I'm currently in the process of backing up multiple PCs, Linux and Windows, and there is a serious PITA with Windows boxes. I have a lot of data I need to back up and merge, some of which is being dragged from Win 98 or something era, via "My Documents" upgrades to the next version, some o...

Is it ok to run fanless?

Recently I started a topic about 100% silent Linux server - http://techreport.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=83332 The hardware has arrived, and the PC is built. The only question remains about cooling. Just to repeat, the system is built as follows: Intel D2700DC (CPU + Mobo + GPU) 4GB Corsair...

Re: XCOM Enemy Unknown

Is it going to be a DRM title?

What is the time-line of XCOMs anyway? I remember the game from DOS era, which was awesome. One was on land, one on water. But then, I can't find them on GOG, there is only UFO:after/light/math/shock

Are they from the same series? Are they as good as originals?

Loving it so far - except for the motion-sickness... :( I don't understand why some games get me and others don't. I've never had trouble with Source a engine game before... :-? Then on the first boot it pops a information that proprietary GPU drivers are available for install if you wish. Clicking on activate will install the latest one. And, IIRC, Mint install was even easier. You boot from live DVD, click install. You don't even get nagged about "Try", and &quo...

Some of the extra bureaucracy and kludges like Sharepoint migration and administration, ZOMG this, simply don't exist in the first place. Re: Why DRM stinks

I don't think Madman was complaning that compatibility was the issue. I think he was more complaining that the developer, who in the past hosted the linux compatible binaries was no longer making the effort to make them readily available to the general public. But they were. Bioware still hosts the...

As I said: Sketchup and Picassa. Google bought them and then did not do a damn thing to develop them, improve them, expand them, update them, bring progress to them. Actually there are a lot of applications that don't need upgrading, pretty please! What upgrading does is - it sticks ribbon on file ...

And why name the thread "Why DRM stinks" in that case? Simple, I was having troubles with a simple scenario - buy a game, go to a support page, download a patch, run. This was a lot harder than I expected, even though solvable in the end. The biggest problem was that official support was ...

You're more optimistic than I am. I think 10% of home users would be a major stretch; 5% might be in reach, but only if developers of games and other mainstream apps get behind it, and high-profile sites like Amazon's MP3 store don't continue to do stupid arbitrary stuff to inconvenience Linux user...

Neither am I, it will take a very long time to get anywhere above 10%, but given all the factors, there is a chance that the trend might finally start. Which would be a great thing.

Even if Linux was able to gain an enormous amount of market share, I can't imagine they would be able to maintain it on the desktop. My advice - don't EVER think about development for Windows! Think about development for for cross-platform or for Linux/Mac. There is no arguing Windows has the best developer tools, but once you step into DirectX, MFC, WTL, WinAPI or something like that, that's it. End of story, you're platform lo...

I would say - data layer and business logic goes into C++ DLLs/SO/executables, GUI's can be adjusted for the different platforms.

Plus you're in Linux, you shouldn't need to be running the game with super user privileges so what's the worry?
