Re: ASUS GL502VS USB Type C Problems

I picked out a DP 1.2 MST hub; looks like I'm a year off on a potential price drop, but future proofing isn't that important yet until I get into higher res screens, which is not in my budget nor planning yet. I don't think the laptop has Optimus. The Nvidia control panel doesn't show which graphics...

Re: ASUS GL502VS USB Type C Problems

the, thanks a ton for that post and for clarifying the misinformation in the article. I was off-put by the idea of using a DP hub due to the lack of monitor independence (or so a salesperson at Micro Center said), but was not aware of the MST standard. I'm basically trying to run 3 1080p screens (wh...

ASUS GL502VS USB Type C Problems

Since Google has been worse than useless so far, I figure I'd see what people here know... Recently, I ordered a Type C adapter that breaks out to a Type C, DVI, and Type A. (http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=103&cp_id=10330&cs_id=1033001&p_id=15759&seq=1&format=2) Upon malfu...

I use Paragon Partition Manager Free Edition, if I'm not on Linux. It's worked well so far.

Re: Stupid PNY memory card, and micro-SD questions

I've had two SanDisk 64 GB MicroSD's die out, each lasting about a year. They were used in my Galaxy S3 with CM 10 (later upgraded to CM 12) for my music library and camera. The malfunctions always happened when taking them out to connect to the PC for quickly transferring a lot of files at a time. ...

Re: Online ads have become maddening

This is generally my process.

- Enable ABP.
- If the site requests disabling it, and I decide to support them, I disable ABP for that site. (Such as for Tech Report, of course =).)
- If the browser starts going insane, I re-enable ABP as quickly as I can.

Re: Resurrecting a AMD Phenom II 955 For a cheap gaming Buli

I read this thread with a Phenom II X4 965 in my tower and tears in my eyes... I read this thread on a 955 and to my utter surprise, haven't really required anything better despite occasional demanding use. (What I DO need is for Windows 10 to work properly, but that's another story entirely....

Re: Über-high PPI w/o texture filtering - Damage says I'm cr

That part on the texture filtering may not be so far-fetched. Super Smash Bros. 3DS already omits a lot of texture filtering in the environmental art which is only really noticeable when pausing and zooming in, although this really only works because of how low-resolution the 3DS's screen is.

I dismissed the Pi as a NAS/home server specifically for that reason. There may be other similar solutions out there with a proper gigabit NIC though, but I still need to look into it.

Now THAT is how you wire a house! No more useless phone line garbage, just cat5e/cat6 everywhere. You can get HDMI and USB transmitters that run through those cables too.

Re: Low-E Linux Home Server

I was hoping to go for ARM for the complete silence, tiny form factor, extremely low energy use, etc. but a Google search for "samba server arm" is making me cringe a little. I'll have to investigate it further; I don't need huge software variety; just the basics (Apache/Nginx, MySQL/Maria...

Re: Low-E Linux Home Server

Hmm, good call. I forgot that the software being run has to be ARM as well, and I'm not familiar with the options in that case. Perhaps instead, I could build out a small form factor (Mini ITX? Edit: Or thin Micro ATX.) system with an Atom or i3. Space for 2 or 3 HDD's should be enough, at least if ...

Low-E Linux Home Server

The server will be fairly general purpose, but will be used heavily for local network and some remote storage. Other possible use cases include anything I might need a 24/7 machine for, such as minor file hosting. I don't expect to have more than 5 users at a time, but any such usage will be occupyi...

Re: firstgamingpcfor TeenageSon...

Better yet, have your son involved in the process of building the system. It's a good learning experience and can lead to good career directions. Also, a good gaming PC can run other sorts of software (image editing, 3D, etc.), which is also a potential learning experience of its own. The most commo...

For input lag there's also http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/ Don't know how authoritative the site is. According to that site, the lowest latencies you'll find are around some 10ms or so. I found some IPS monitors that measured out to this too, so I didn't think there was much additional ...

Looking for Speaker Recommendations (Computer Setup)

First and foremost requirement: All cables must be disconnectable; nothing built-in to any component, whatsoever. Every speaker set I've owned so far has had problems due to cabling, and they cannot be simply replaced. (Instead, I have to attempt to solder them together, which results in a huge dura...

One of my favorite features of RDP however, is that it seamlessly handles resolution adjusting;...

Re: Better Remote Desktop Software

^ Have you used TeamViewer for 3D/video applications? Most sources (and my own limited time spent testing it) say it's slower than RDP, so I wouldn't think it'd work. I'll take a look at RemoteFX later and see if it still requires VDI/workstation hardware. The lack of OpenGL support may be a problem...

I've been using RDP for remote desktop needs. Works great, but I'd like to be able to step things up. With all this new talk and tech about streaming things, from the Wii U gamepad and nVidia Shield to SteamOS, has there been ANY general remote desktop software that uses the same kind of tech? It would be a no-brainer for me IFF it had an sd slot. I do wonder how many of us out there need reasonable storage options and don't want to pay $200 for 48 GB of NAND. Re: Oops, need a NIC recommendation

If you're looking to save cash, I've done well with Monoprice's wireless adapters. (Although I've only used the USB dongle, never use internal ones.) The only caveat seems to be lack of Linux kernel support, but they do include a disk with a driver on them. Still haven't tried it out there. If lack ...

If you can use the free solutions for your Office needs, you may be better off in terms of interoperability. I've yet to see a very good mobile experience for working with doc's and pdf's; I tend to use mobile just for viewing/accessing them, and don't make edits often.

If you can find some way to digitize those books (for example, finding ebook versions), that could save a lot of weight. As for Linux, I don't have much idea on driver support.
