Re: AMD EPYC 7002 - Rome wasn't built at 14 nm

This is an unequivocal home run for AMD in the server. Only unknown keeping it from a grand slam is supply which I foresee them being able to see every chip that they can make for the next year. Of course my ego can think of a few things more that I wish AMD did: ⋅ Quad socket support &sdo...

Re: Does this exist? VNC-like remote access through a sort-of KVM?

I recall Dell selling a KVM that you could directly VNC into and then pass keyboard commands directly to connected devices. Designed to provide connectivity to systems that didn't have normal remote access etc. Old job had some of these accessible from the OoB network for trouble shooting some devic...

Re: That make me CRAYzy

I believe that HPE was also the division of HP behind the memristor that unfortunately has gone nowhere commercially. They had some truly innovative ideas for non Von Neumann architectures using the memristor, but you need to get the fundamental components working at scale first. HPE is still doing...

Re: That make me CRAYzy

It wasn't too long ago that HPE bought SGI and with it their NUMAlink interconnect. This merger has had some HPE product come from it (it also helped that HPE was previously rebranding a high socket count SGI box). Cray is more puzzling. Cray of course does system builds but that is nothing special ...

The Captain Marvel movie is OK. Think Memento meets Men in Black. It has its moments but it just doesn't come together like all the other Marvel films. The thing that stood out the most was how poorly the music was handled: it has the exact same problem with music as Suicide Squad. Nirvana's "C...

Re: RyZen 2 Desktop CONFIRMED... to not have 16 cores

I see AMD only announcing 8 core Ryzen 3 chips is that they don't want to formally play their hand preemptively. They seemingly can take on the i9 9900K but the real challenger will be Ice Lake. Their launch windows look to be close with June being floated around for Ryzen 3 from various manufacture...

Re: RyZen 2 Desktop CONFIRMED... to not have 16 cores

Given how much larger the I/O chip is than the actual cores, and given some of the rumors surrounding Epyc, I have a controversial theory: I think that to make that chiplet smaller, AMD put the L3 cache on the I/O hub chip and that chiplet is just Cores + L2 caches + the I/O interface circuitry. We...

Does the MSI display have an option for HBR2 mode? Try toggling that on the display.

I would also attempt to use the different DP connectors on the RX580 to see if this changes anything with the different cabling schemas.

Re: why monitors have better picture than tvs?

To get the best picture, manual tweaking is almost always necessary out of the box. The end consumer is generally lazy and not going to calibrate the display. Ditto for changing things like pixel mapping for over/underscan. Out of the box and just plug it in experience matters a lot and even Sony an...

Re: why monitors have better picture than tvs?

@the That's not the case anymore, not for quite a few years now. 1920x1080 and other standard resolutions work fine. Also 0-255 color range is no problem (random examples: Sony , Samsung ). You say that but I still encounter these issues on new displays. Much of that is related to the poor EDID tab...

Re: why monitors have better picture than tvs?

There are several things that effect how off consumer TV's can be "off". First is that HDMI on the consumer side has a limited range for RGB, 0 to 231 instead of the expected 0 to 255 values for each color component. The second aspect is that TV's may operate in YUC mode instead of RGB. Th...

I'm glad you like it, but regurgitating marketing schtick is beneath you. One cannot have "lag free" and "wireless" I've seen it with 60 Ghz equipment but there are a ton of caveats with that frequency. Pretty much need line of sight and a thick piece of paper can interrupt a si...

Re: What's the latest with Intel Thunderbolt 3 integration?

My working theory is that we'll be seeing Thunderbolt 3/4 in iPads and iPhones next year. Beyond that, there is a chance that nVidia and AMD have both licensed it for inclusion on their GPUs. This would be a timely coincidence as Intel has had to fuse of the GPU on the few 10 nm Cannon Lake parts th...

Re: PCI-E x1 on a PCI-E x16 slot?

The catch with a 16x slot is that it provides more power than a 1x/4x slot. Really low end cards might be fine as well as some high end cards with a good VRM/power balancing setup that are undervolted or otherwise intentionally throttled. The challenge are the 75W edge connector only cards.

Given that Courier predated the iPad and got many of the same things right in the design, Andormeda was probably a very forward thinking and revolutionary design which Apple will undoubtedly come out with 6 months later and be first because MS axe...

Huh, I would guess that Intel snuck in a Quark core into the baseband. Ultimately though, I think Apple will start to develop their own baseband modems. That is really the only part of the design that they completely rely on 3rd parties to engineer. (Apple has invested heavily into screen technologi...

Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

The way I understand it ARM processors are decent for performing one task at a time, and to do a different task they need to be switched to do a different task in software. Not a good way to multitask. For raw horsepower, I don't think ARM will be able to beat the x86 design, based on, well, the wa...

Well it looks like Spectre can break into SMM. This follows on the heels of another SMM attack in recent memory, coincidentally introduced in the first chips that Spectre could also be used.

Oh, and there is Spectre NG on the way too.
