Re: Windows 10, unfixable mess

It sounds more like a hardware issue. Maybe your disk drive is dying?

How does an alternate boot source run? Maybe ubuntu on a usb drive? From that you can look at the SMART stats on the disk and run badblocks or something.

Re: Video card prices

I'm not quite in need of replacing my old desktop right now (i7-3770, 16GB, Win7) but my Radeon HD 7950 is starting to die. I can no longer do sleep mode because the card won't come back out of it (have to reboot) and now it's starting to artifact on occasion and have driver failures. It's dying at ...

Re: Any (TV) cord cutters out there?

I'm almost there. As in, I'm going to call comcast and cancel my TV service either on my way home from work in a few hours or tomorrow morning, and then drop off my two HD-DVRs. I can't justify the extra even $50+ a month when I rarely watch cable TV. I have an old HDHomeRun I've had for awhile that...

Re: New TV (maybe) this year...and a bunch of other stuff...

As far as screen size & resolutions go... take a look at Visual Acuity Distance ... it's the distance at which someone can legitimately discern the quality difference between (available) resolutions. Past that point the pixels are too small to tell any difference from each other. A 60" wide...

Re: RHEL CDROM madness

Is this just a test or are you trying to get files to those VM's? If the latter, why not transfer over the network or use a ISO file? VM's can make things... odd. RHEL5 & 6 handle can handle devices differently as well. How is the CD/DVD virtual device handled in your RHEL5 VM? And how is it in ...

Re: Sanity check! Rsync for dummies

Why use find at all? What is the requirement for just the last 24 hours? rsync will sync any files and you can specify in the rsync syntax to overwrite existing files or not. The way that looks right now you are only finding files on your local server. Just one little (big) note about rsync... it ge...

Re: SSD and older laptop

I repeat the recommendation to simply backup all of the data and do a fresh install.

Also if this is still Windows XP there will be a lot of tweaks to do in the OS for your SSD to run optimally. If you can do Windows 7 instead you should.

lol... yeah by now people should have learned to never say you'll never need it. Years ago when 1 or 2MB of RAM was standard my dad came home with 16MB of RAM to put in the Mac IIfx (thing was a beast back in the day). He said "we'll neeevvvveerrrrr use that much memory". 16MB. Just saying.

Re: any reason to get 16GB RAM?

Well, what's the price difference? To me RAM is so stinkin cheap right now I don't see any reason not to get 16GB. 8GB will be fine for some time for sure, especially if you aren't doing a whole doing the things you mentioned. Even so RAM prices fluctuate and eventually DDR4 or something else will b...

Assuming Ubuntu doesn't mess with grub and it's standard the next time you get to the grub screen hit "a" (append) and at the end of the line that you can edit type in "single" and hit enter. This will boot in single user mode with no GUI. I don't know if it will ask you for your...

Yeah, it's as if it has locked up. I get nothing. I end up having to hold my power button to restart. So you can't switch to other virtual consoles at all? Doesn't seem like it's getting very far. Re: LinuxMint 13 install issue

Many linux distro's have "alternate consoles" that you can get to with a key combination. In RedHat/CentOS it's ctrl+alt+F1 through F9 or however.. it depends on if it's the install or actually running. For a RH install I believe F1 & F2 are shells whereas F3 and/or F4 are log & er...

Re: Intell s3000ahv raid 1 plus seperate data drive

Are there any other options in the array configuration? You'd most likely be looking to create either a pass-thru disk or another logical drive with just that disk in it. Different controllers do different things to make what you want work. But yes, adding a separate card will allow you to use the d...

If performance/cost is your only concern than you have to do what you have to do. But... if things like uptime and reliability mean anything to them than they will want to go for server hardware, even if it's a little older. A raid mirror and redundant power supplies sound expensive and fancy until ...

Tito's Vodka is probably the best widely available vodka for the money, IMO. Yes and yes. I can pick up a 1.75L bottle for $30. Fantastic. I prefer sailor jerry's for a normal mixing rum. I love sipping The Kraken rum- but twice I've drank a lot of it and had a wicked hangover the next day... and I...

Re: Bought an Agility 3 and already scared

You should check your model number / revision to see what firmware level it shipped with, and track down if it's the most current and/or what you want to have. You can't know what it has until you receive the drive though. Secure Erase is only used to do a full clear on all of the memory across the ...

Just something real quick: Don't bother with the Raid 0 on the mechanical drives. Get a single 1.5TB drive instead. Just something much better than a slow small 500g value drive. 1. Raid 0 doesn't improve game load performance. Or any day to day performance. It only helps on large sequential file re...

Re: CPU vs Graphics chip in Laptops

My answer may be a little different... If you want to play games, and by games I mean actual games that require a 3D card, then go with a good 3D graphics card over a faster cpu to a point. In your case though, that GPU isn't very great so go with a faster CPU regardless. The thing is, for day to da...
