Re: Affordable low light DSLR dilemna

If his focus is on photography I'd say the K-r/K-x. If he has interest in video, he may be better off with the A33 for it's auto focus ability. I also wouldn't worry about the "limited range" of Pentax lenses. You've got all the standard zoom and a nice assortment of primes available to yo...

Re: Connecting Remotely to other Windows PCs

http://teamviewer.com/index.aspx

I tried using the one built into Windows, but never could get it to work. Teamviewer was as simple as install and run on both computers. You get a window that is the other person's desktop and you can do anything to the computer as if you were right there.

Re: Anyone purchase anything from Provantage?

I have no direct experience with Provantage, however, Resellerratings is a pretty good site to find out about resellers you don't have experience with. Provantage seems to have a good reputation if judged by the reviews there.

Re: Network + Sound

ah ha! well then maybe someone SHOULDNT make that. :) I was always under the impression that onboard audio and network used a small amount of cpu, an amount that could be freed by installing a network and sound card. Is onboard sound good enough these days to make soundcards unnecessary to the aver...

Re: New build issues -- The econobox

Oh! One more thing I wanted to mention about this build... after assembly and I was putting in the graphics card, it would shut down and the screen would go black after a few minutes. The problem was that I had just assembled it and the side case was still open, and the graphics card was overheatin...

Re: General photography thread [img heavy]

Have you tried one of those wide-angle/macro adapters that screws on to the front of the lens? They tend to have vignetting and corner-sharpness problems, and you get the same issue of losing about an f-stop or so, but the price is usually acceptable. I've got a Raynox DCR-150 Macro adapter. The fo...

Re: SLR Beginner Kit

Nice checklist ludi. Here's my basic checklist: 1. Total Use: The shutter count should be reasonable. Over about 25-35k operations and you've got a heavily used camera body which may need some adjustment service in the near future. If the previous user left the camera in sequential-numbering mode th...

Re: What's up with the Google balls today?

search as you type? seems pretty fast though Eh? There as been rumors this would be coming but I don't see it on the current Google page. Are you sure you're not referring to the suggestions? You may want to check it again. The difference is pretty dramatic. As soon as I type a letter in the main g...

Re: SLR Beginner Kit

Hi guys What I was thinking was maybe starting with a decent fast prime lens (say a 50mm f/1.8) which is about £70 or so new but what back to get? I could get a good prosumer second hand 35mm film back (eg Nikon F80) with which to start learning how to produce the results I want... or if i went dig...

I guess Microsoft just doesn't care so much about Google's Bday. Firefox is joining in the cheer though. ;)

Re: Discuss TR's hardware photography contest

One submission by SUSHRUKH on page two is definitely isn't one of 'his customers' as the picture is of one of my old systems. Glad he wasn't a winner with a bunch of stolen pictures. Quite. Looking deeper at the images it seems all his submissions are likely stolen. Which image is yours? Alt...

Re: What shooting mode do you use most often?

The OP mentioned "mode" and I completely disregarded my film camera: it has no modes.

My SLR is a Pentax Spotmatic and it's completely "manual"; there is no option. ;)

I don't know what digital it'll be, but...

We've also singled out an additional 18 winners, each of whom will receive a free digital copy of Metro 2033.

I do know it'll be digital. :)

That's quoted from the page announcing the winners.

Re: Those things in games you could do without

There is a difference between a Quad damage power up which anyone who knows the level can get, and a buff that only comes to you when you do things like get 5 kills in a row. Why would you need a buff to help you kill more when you are already killing more than anyone else? Exactly. So long as the ...

Re: What shooting mode do you use most often?

I'm probably evenly split between Av and M. M is required for all my fully manual lenses. Isn't M a little slow for candids? I'll use M if I'm shooting with a flash, since the flash will dial in the correct illumination for me in TTL mode. But if I need to capture the moment and don't have time to a...

Re: Those things in games you could do without

I play mostly online shooters and the thing that I hate the most is anything that rewards the better players. I hated it when Epic introduced them to the UT series in 2k3 with adrenaline. Better players already have an advantage over other players; they don't need to be handed more by the game. Call...

Something else that’s been bugging me, and I can’t seem to figure out, is colour profiles. I use photoshop to process many of my pics, and until recently I did not know that the adobe colour profile it was defaulting to is not compatible with many browser / web based applications (including flickr,...
