Re: Consolidated Editor's Choice / Recommended Hardware List

I appreciate the reply. Quite familiar with your guys' guides. Been reading for many years :) I mostly like seeing the article itself of the specific item reviews and, frankly, usually skip to the last page to see if something got a Recommended or EC stamp before reading further. Figured maybe there...

Consolidated Editor's Choice / Recommended Hardware List

I'm shopping around for various components and stuff and was just curious if there's a link around to a comprehensive list of all products TR has ever given an EC or Recommended rating.

Thanks much!

Re: Old Linksys WRT54G Ver 6

That's a shame. Oh well.

I always heard the 54Gs were supposed to be good routers, but I have no need to hold on to something that isn't solid.

Thanks!

Old Linksys WRT54G Ver 6

I've got an old router here that I'm keeping around, but haven't used in years. Currently using a CenturyLink required modem gateway with the internal AP disabled and instead plugged to a UniFi LR AP. If we have to (shudder) switch to Comcast when we move, would it be useful to hold on to this thing...

Re: Incresed Electrical Noise on High Perf Power Setting

I admit, it's a lot quieter than I had feared based on my wife's description. I bought the laptop for her, so I'll let her decide on RMA.

Thanks for the insight. More professional than forum posts my wife saw where they were like just wear headphones!

Incresed Electrical Noise on High Perf Power Setting

Brand new MSI GE62 APACHE-002 from Microsoft Signature store. Less than 24 hours since box open. Have noticed a specific, repeatable noise that the new girl generates while plugged in and on high performance power. It's this relatively slight but noticeable high-pitched electrical-sounding whine. It...

Android Chrome New Tab Shortcuts

I'm trying to search for this, but I just can't seem to get the effect I'm looking for... I think I'm just using bad search terms. Android Chrome browser... default new tab has the google search box in the middle then the 8 slots for shortcut buttons? I figured out long ago how to delete them, that'...

Hotel Wifi Question/Experiment

Hi all, I'm on the road and am staying at a Marriott-branded hotel. Free wifi available, but the speeds are really hardly enough to fairly stream video (intentional I'm sure). Speedof.me tests give me 800-850 kbps down and 900-1000 kbps up for a standard free connection. For a fee, I can up my speed...

Dealing with Laptop Gaming and Resolutions

Hi there, New to gaming with laptops. I have a UX303UB Zenbook with Win 10. Not a major rig, but enough to play what I want casually. I've been having trouble tweaking resolutions and scaling properly. Native resolution on this thing is 3200x1800, and I have the scaling slider in Display Settings at...

Re: New UX303UB and Cleaning Her Out

Not a signature edition, unfortunately... it was given as a gift, so certainly not going to complain.

So I guess my question is, should I just wipe the drive and re-install Win 10 cleanly? If I do so, will that prevent the bloat?

New UX303UB and Cleaning Her Out

Hi there. I'm getting an Asus ZenBook UX303UB for a mildly belated Christmas gift here soon and had some questions. Does anyone know what kind of bloat will be pre-installed? If it's advantageous, I'd like to download install media to a USB 3.0 flash drive, wipe the thing, and clean install stock Wi...

Best Off-Site Backup Solution

So, want a legit backup solution here. We have too many pictures to back up reasonably with our piss ass DSL connection. It would literally take days, if not weeks, to successfully save it all. These are our family pictures for the most part. Cloud is cool and all, but appears to take too long. Shou...

Don't care about bling, just build quality and good price for performance. I'm guessing the slight processor knock on the MSI GE62 (i7 5700HQ vs i7 6700HQ in the others) isn't too big a deal then? As for install media, I don't mind at all wiping a computer and re-installing an OS... would I be looki...

Hi there, Wife's machine is running a pair of 560 Ti's. One of the fans is starting to rattle/crap out methinks. Looking for a suitable single card replacement. Sub $200 preferably. Is the venerable WRT54GL too old now? Should I spend extra $$$ on an N router? Does dual band make a lot of difference?

Router will be upstairs in office to hard wire to PCs. Will feed numerous wireless devices downstairs though.

Paid cash for the C1000A. So make the C1000 a transparent bridge, effectively making it only the modem, correct? So I'm just buying another gateway and disabling the modem, effectively? I'll muddy my way through all this network setup stuff... But honestly, static IPs in my LAN (and a DMZ back in co...

Memtest 86 and memtest 86+ are different programs, just an fyi. Always tricky troubleshooting these things, bad or loose sata cables, another culprit. Try the 86+ version form a bootable ISO CD rom disk, if possible, that's how I found my ram errors. Good luck. It's MemTest86+ from a bootable USB f...

Can you have it use both all the time? This would be ideal... except the headset she likes doesn't have an in-line volume control or mute or anything... so there would always be an annoying "side" sound from the headset on the desk if a straight splitter was involved. http://www.radioshac...

Re: Getting Scared of my Shutdown BSODs

This obviously looks like data is being corrupted somewhere in the system and when things don't match up, you get those BSODs. I would test RAM and the SSD thoroughly and do a reformat just to be sure a corrupted OS is not the culprit. If all these check out ok, it could be your motherboard. Btw, a...

Re: Getting Scared of my Shutdown BSODs

I concur with Krogoth and JBI, I had strange issues like that with a laptop, MS mem check came back clean as did another one. It lead me to believe it was a bad software update (virus scanner or adobe, etc.) I beat around the bush for awhile. Put on memtest 86+ one night before bed, the next day th...
