Re: Upgrading to CoffeeLake, or should I wait ?

There may be more to it than just the four-core four-thread thread limit. Sure, Intel slowed down development and dribbled out performance improvements to desktop processors at a slow pace when AMD wasn't challenging them, but even at +5% per generation, a lot of time has passed since the Core i5-25...

Helium, once vented to atmosphere, is lost forever. It's light enough that it floats up to the top of the atmosphere and then is pushed off into interplanetary space by the solar wind.

That's the sanitized version, not the original with the homophobic slur.
Brothers In Arms was the first CD that I ever purchased. There weren't many from which to choose in 1985.

The lightning hub built into the Pioneer Rayz Plus (so that you can charge your phone or transfer data between the phone and PC while listening to music) isn't nearly as ugly as those.

Re: DELL PC3-12800 memory upgrade

During that era, the initial batch of Ivy Bridge CPUs like the one in your system notably did not like higher RAM voltages that the contemporary AMD processors could handle. Ivy Bridge was rated for 1.35 V but tolerated 1.5 V memory. Both of those kits are rated at 1.5 V. Do the DIMMs have different...

Re: Need help to do a parts-list to upgrade my PC

I'd be pretty strongly dis-inclined to put ANY more money into this system at this point. My advice is put the money you'd be spending on trying to fix this box towards the new build instead. I'm going to have to agree with the consensus that this ancient system is beyond the point where it makes s...

Re: Let's listen to a well recorded mixtape!

In 1985, CD players were fairly expensive and CDs were more so. Neither LPs nor CDs were easily portable. Poor college students recorded each other's music libraries or our own onto cassette tapes so that we could play them in our cars and boom boxes. Once I graduated and got a real job, I upgraded ...

How long does it usually take for the stock of motherboards to turn over so that they are delivered to you with a newer BIOS?

Perhaps a $60 Bristol Ridge APU would be a useful tool for you if you end up needing to flash a bunch of Socket-AM4 motherboards to accept new Raven Ridge APUs?

The sweet spot in terms of $/TB starts at 3 TB and goes up to 8 or 10 TB. There's really little point in buying a spinning hard-drive smaller than 3 TB.
$30 / TB Toshiba X300 - I see these on sale for $25/TB pretty frequently.
$31 / TB Hitachi Deskstar NAS - Probably the most reliable option.

NVidia and AMD have a vested interest in the long-term success of PC gaming. Prices for any working components that old are exorbitant.
$251½ for a new Asus Z87-Pro (V edition)
$155 for a used Asus Z97-A

If you've given up on the speed controller built into the graphics card, powering the fans from a Molex connector should handle more than enough current.
