Re: Something's different...

FWIW, I emailed Renee as per the introduction story to cancel my subscription. Got a reply yesterday saying it had been cancelled. As an aside, the "vomitus" comment is why I won't be missing some aspects of the old TR either. I don't think much of the new editorial direction, but that sor...

Re: Something's different...

I wanted to make it at least through the barbecue, but you know what, **** this. These people refuse to cancel the recurring Stripe payments and they refuse to put the applet back on the site. It's been four weeks, and Renee has been extremely salty whenever it comes up, like it doesn't matter to t...

Re: Something's different...

Just caught up with this, and I appreciate that you've fronted up here. However, I'm done participating on the front page (sorry, no more cat jokes) until we see how this pans out. In the meantime, how do I go about cancelling the auto-renewal for my subscription? The "subscriptions" page...

I am a little disappointed he doesn't use that pic as his avatar.

Re: Something's different...

Please add a Disqus section like many sites or why but use what we had before that worked very well. **** no. Disqus has poor tools for moderation, and requires that sites host clickbait ads from the likes of taboola and outbrain. Sites that use it invariably have poor quality comments. I'm prepare...

Re: Something's different...

So now that there is a post up on the front page, can we be clued in to the change in management/staff? Who is Renee Johnson? What does the "corporate" structure of TR look like now? Alright, here we go. TR is now owned by John Rampton and John Hall. It's still an independent site, just w...

Re: Something's different...

That post "announcing" the new design is terrible. It reads like a bland copy/pasted piece of corporate speak addressed to potential advertisers rather than the existing community. There is no road map for improving the site design, nor does it address any community concerns raised in this...

Re: Something's different...

They are right, we've never stored it. The page is here: https://techreport.com/subscriptions/ Honestly though, I don't know what exactly subs mean right now. They are on my list in the first post as something I'm trying to get clarification on. Thanks - that doesn't show any information about my c...

Re: Something's different...

My recollection was that Morphine explained that such sensitive data was actually held by Stripe, not TR. That's good to hear. I'm willing to wait to see if the major concerns (information density, blinding white background) are fixed, but want to stop the auto-renewal until this happens. The socia...

Re: Something's different...

How do I go about changing my subscription? There doesn't seem any way to access it anymore. I'm concerned that credit card information is now being stored on a wordpress site.

Re: New Ars front page

Half of saying something is in what you say; but the other half is how you say it. What was conveyed could have used a bit more tact. Admittedly, frustration tends to (and this includes myself) breed a shortness of temper that results in a verbal shot before thought takes over. But when you're in a...

Re: New Ars front page

Yeah, Aurich made a lot of comments early on that implied he felt it was a very small, whiny minority and that at the end of the day they'd still have 14 million unique visitors or whatever it was. Extremely condescending and made in poor taste. Without commenting in the manner in which the comment...

Just want to say thanks for fixing the issue. Firefox is no longer crashing.

And to those who suggest rolling back to a previous a browser version

Re: Those Homeworld ads - Crashes IE11

Give Firefox/IE a chance to fix the issue, and/or TR a chance to get the problematic ads modified or pulled. The site depends on ad revenue for its existence; don't block ads if you want TR to continue being the site we've all come to know and love. I hope they will, but I have little hope the ads ...

Re: Set up with speakers and a headphone

You can do it with this handy little tray program: http://audioswit.ch/er I have it bind to my keyboards macro keys to toggle between the onboard sound and the USB wireless headset (there are many ways you can toggle it, not just with keys). Works perfectly. I'd prefer this be a standard feature on...

Re: Those Homeworld ads - Crashes IE11

Interesting, I was wondering why firefox kept on crashing on exit after chewing up one core for a few minutes - and this is with a brand new firefox profile.

I've been reluctant to run any sort of ad block, but combined with the hyper animated gigabyte ads, TR may have finally convinced me to.

Re: Set up with speakers and a headphone

With the Sound Blaster Z, you click on the icon in the tray, select the headphones/speakers tab, and click the radio button to toggle between the headphones and the speakers. You don't have to crawl under the desk to plug or unplug any cables. Interesting - are there any other cards that can do thi...

Re: Intrusive Ads

I'd prefer they not use animated ads, or at least use ones that are less hyperactive. I don't think it's reasonable for the site to subsist off static or text ads. As long as the ad isn't flashing a strobe effect or moving itself around the screen then I don't care about it. The ad in question was ...

Re: Intrusive Ads

I recently removed flash so am no longer presented with flash ads (Yay!) However, they seem to have been replaced by some sort of javascript/animated ads instead (Boo!). http://i.imgur.com/TPWjyHp.png There's also a banner at the top that is equally annoying. Right-clicking on them doesn't provide a...

Re: Seasonic M12II vs S12II

If you're looking for a quiet PSU, the Seasonic X series often goes on sale at newegg. The fan doesn't come on until around 300W load, so it is basically silent most of the time.
