Update: Based on your feedback, I took the IceQ X2 cooler off the HIS Radeon R9 280X and stuck it on our R9 290 sample. Cooling was dramatically improved. The FurMark stress test maxed out at 76 degrees while the card never exceeded 63 degrees in Crysis 3 and Battlefield 4 . So it seems as expected...

I doubt anything but a beefy GPU cooler will help....if you turn all your case fans off, you'll see they don't do much, at least mine don't in Antec 1100+3 fans.

The point I'm making is that I was under the impression that frametime results indicated that AMD had issues/more issues than Nvidia, however, in my experience, every time the framerates exceed 50FPS, it's a extremely smooth experience, IOW, high frames/second still seem to be the goal. So far with the 7950 and also with the jump from 4850-6850, I noticed that as long as FPS exceed 50, then it's extremely smooth. I tried playing Crysis1 with the 6850 maxed+2xaa and even that induced stutter during firefights, but with 7950, Crysis is maxed+8xaa and silky smooth, in fact I was marve...

Now that I've got a 7950, up from 6850 and 4850, my games are butter smooth, so how do I tell that I'm suffering from frame time problems.
With my older system and GPU's, it was easy to induce lag and noticeable stutter, but Crysis 1 and Metro2033 1920x1200 maxed are supa smooth.

I would only consider ASUS/ASROCK and Gigabyte for mobo.
I get the feeling that MSI have a far better rep with GPU than mobo....

I don't like to skimp on mobo and PSU as that's the heart and CNS of the PC.
I'll probably get this next Monday and build it on the same day.

thing is, i'll be using a 2slot GPU and have a sound and HDTV card that will require 2 PCI slots.....and the smaller boards won't accommodate that unless I can use a PCIe slot for PCI...?

I want a full sized ATX so that I can have a GPU and 2 PCI cards.
I also need a mobo which will accept Antec 1100's usb3 plug for the front USB ports, and the $193 asus seems to have that as well.

FEAR 2005 is one of the best FPS/combat shooters ever made.
Extraction Pt has the same technical excellence as FEAR but not as good a gaming experience.

Persus Mandate+2/3 are low grade crap by nearly every criteria.

Those expensive boards are for overclocked stability and reliability- the 'normal' boards are just plain stable and reliable. Lets say I go for 16gig, do I do 2x8, and if so what speed etc etc?

Flip I think it makes you happier to tell everyone you don't game anymore than actually not gaming. ;) There honestly is some pleasure in seeing the costs that I'm spared and in not suffering "the itch" nearly as frequently. But, yes, I do tend to share my feelings pretty freely sometimes...
