Re: AMD equivalent to i7-4790k?

I believe the closest equivalent would be the Ryzen 5 2500X. Both are 4C/8T with very similar performance. The 1500X is pretty close too, but clock speeds are pretty low so it gets beaten in lightly threaded stuff like games of their day.

Re: PCIe 4.0 boosts SSD sequential performance

Even good old PCIe3 NVMe is largely useless for home systems. I remember seeing a side by side comparison video of boot and various game load times featuring then super-spiffy Samsung 960 NVMe vs a Crucial SATA SSD. There was really no difference, and in one or two cases the Crucial might have even ...

It actually makes stuff really easy to see! Kinda like turning detail levels to very low on 3D games end up giving you a competitive advantage.

I wonder if some pros might start using cartoon mode to get an edge lol

People hating on the custom CMS like it's a universally bad thing... IMO the best thing about the custom CMS is that no module is suddenly going to get an update that turns vulnerable or breaks functionality. Interesting that the new chipset doesn't support 1st gen Ryzens. I wonder if that is a "it isn't validated but should work" thing, or a "it probably won't work" thing. I believe it's a 'not enough space in the BIOS EEPROM' thing. I recall reading a report that certain motherboar...

Used to use Dropbox quite a lot, but with their ever reducing capacity and features nowadays I've mostly switched to Google Drive. If you're ok leaving your files with big brother it really is quite a bit more useful. Being able to search for excerpts of text inside the files using Google's engine t...

(I would link to the SSD test that TR did but you probably know about it). In hindsight the TR SSD endurance experiment wasn't a very good test. Geoff did no verification of the written data, and since each disk was re-written as a whole wear-leveling algorithms weren't tested either. It was basica...

Re: I've been trying Raxco Perfect Disk for NTFS Defrags

That just adds wear to cells that would be otherwise left untouched? In theory you could end up with a drive where half the cells only have a few writes while the remaining 50% are 100% worn. This seems like a very theoretical case though since it would need you to never touch those first 50% durin...

Re: I've been trying Raxco Perfect Disk for NTFS Defrags

That bit about SSDs was interesting and indeed quite educational. Thinking back on how NAND cells have an endurance rating, it does make sense to at least move data blocks around otherwise all the wear ends up concentrated on the unused NAND blocks, while blocks that have been constantly occupied wi...

Been thinking of setting up a emulation cabinet for the rec room and both the Pi4 and that Atom board look mighty interesting. I've built a RetroArch RasPi3 before but the input lag was terrible. I wonder how it works. Going from ~50ms to ~33ms sounds an awful lot like the difference between double and triple buffering, which might be getting dynamically toggled by the driver depending on GPU load.

I think electrics are awesome, but the batteries are still lithium-ion tech same as we have in our phones and laptops and eventually they have a service life that depends on the number of charge cycles they go through. Running them low, and charging them too often/too fast will accelerate the degrad...

IIRC the Pentium is Penyrn, whereas the C2D is Wolfdale.
Pentium has SSE4.1 but smaller cache, which probably causes the differences. Like 7z is more cache sensitive whereas the AIDA64 test might be using SSE4.1.

Re: Looking for replacement for aging Z-5500 set

If audio is going down the same cable as video (like HDMI) de-syncs shouldn't be a problem. It's really input latency where the setup might fall flat.

A good way is to use the receiver as nothing more than an amp: The PC's analog outputs into the receiver's RCA inputs for the 5.1 audio.

A shoddy Bluray is still going to have a much higher bitrate than anything on Netflix. Publishers figured if people are willing to accept Netflix quality then they'd be fine with having a few more episodes on a disc. In fact, most consumers are probably happier because less disk swapping. That said,...

Re: Why-1980,90s tv shows(dvd) so faded/fuzzy&awful?

Early DVD transfers were crap, and unless stuff had been re-done recently (like for a Bluray release) the DVDs being sold now are probably from the same digitals from whenever they did it years ago.
