Then you need an enclosure that supports UAS (USB Attached SCSI).

Yeah, it's weird. Why would it swap the first two partitions around though?

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

I don't think the partition alignment issue will be a problem as it's only the Microsoft reserved partition affected, all of the other partitions start on a multiple of 2048.

Re: Just installed an SSD. Anything I should be wary of?

The only thing I would be wary about is that the free drive cloning software provided by Crucial (a version of Acronis True Image) doesn't do a true clone, it changes the disk identifier and the volume serial numbers. RealVNC did not like this. Actually, it even changed the size of the MSR partition...

This is a myth actually. The 68K was a clean sheet design. The 6800 peripheral chip compatibility it initially had was tacked on and was removed fairly early on.

Yes, I see Nintendo have now clarified this.  That's good news for gamers, maybe not so much for Nintendo since it's just one less reason to buy a Switch.

Re: Nintendo Switch

Our household got a lot of millage out of our Wii U (until some idiot destroyed all our save files switching to an SSD for external storage). We're ready for one last fling with it when Zelda comes out. Hopefully Zelda does actually come out for the Wii U.  I wouldn't be surprised if it's released ...

Re: Nintendo Switch

£280 in the UK. What are they smoking. It's like the Wii U all over again. Too many gimmicks (detachable controller, dockable console) pushing the price up.  I doubt the gimmicks cost very much.  Nintendo's desire to make Apple-like profit margins is what's responsible for the overpricing of the Sw...

Not really.  He just really lucky with the silicon lottery.  The MSI, Gigabyte, XFX, Sapphire, Powercolor, Asus RX 480 custom cards are all pretty close in quality and performance.

It sucks your Dell 8700 has noise issues. Clearly I did not state ALL sources are good though. I was responding to Captain Ned's priority list which was in response to someone else's. If your issues are a source as bad as your 8700 then yes, obviously fix that first. I just wanted to make the point...

Re: Are you buying a RX 480?

You need "Will buy an RX 480 but am waiting for the 1060 to be released and for the price to drop due to the resulting competition" as a voting option. Well, that sort of falls into the "wait to see how the 1060 does" bucket. You're waiting to see how much of a price drop on the...

Re: Anyone repair anything today?

The killer here, at least on space, is amp power supplies. True attempts at real high-end always use toroidal transformers on the incoming wall juice and, if you're really gilding the lily, use a separate transformer for each channel. Plus, they incorporate truly heroic-sized capacitor banks (up to...

I'm usually not a fan of USB for sound. It requires additional CPU overhead, Is this even an issue any more these days? With all the extra cores on modern CPUs, and the inability of most consumer applications to leverage multithreading to its full potential, we've got CPU cycles to spare. It's not ...

I thought it was pretty well designed too. If the analog layouts are done with care, I would expect the limiting factor to actually be the DACs - assuming that isn't a knock off Burr Brown op-amp. Unlikely I would think. Everything I've seen from Topping seems to be nice, well made stuff. The brand...

Not one for audio equipment but coming from using a Raspberry Pi making sure that the wall wort is providing the full power required can be a big deal, especially under draw. +1 for making sure you have a decent power source, especially if it is suspect to you already. Not true. With power supplies only voltage matters as the attached device will draw only the current it needs, no more. Just make sure the replacement power supply is rated to supply at least as much current as the original.

I hope some well-known sound card maker takes one of VIA's Envy chips, builds a good sound card around it, and sells it for something like $50 - $70, something that undercuts the popular Sound Blaster models. Or maybe they can go after the likes of the Xonar Essence STX and build a $200 card with V...

Yes, and that's the problem. The statement "tubes distort in even-order while sold-state distorts in odd-order" oversimplifies to the point of falsehood. Like most things in life, it's a generalization. When does that cross the line into oversimplification? When it is more likely to misle...

And then we get into the "order" of the distortion, even or odd. Tubes distort in even-order, which sounds good to the ear (and is why really good guitar amps still use tubes) while sold-state distorts in odd-order, which sounds discordant to the ear. Out of all the myths which exist abou...
