Re: Headphone upgrade advice

I have the audio technica ATH-M50 (pre - "X") -- supposedly about the same sound as the newer -M50x version but without the replaceable cord. They sound great. But the best I've personally heard, and for about half the price, are these: https://www.costco.com/1More-Triple-Driver-In-Ear-Hea...

Re: New headphones suggestions and comments

Again, I can only speak from experience on the Senn 280pro and the ATH-M50. A brief listen I gave the M50 a few years back is chronicled here . If you haven't listened to better stuff, the 280pro is decent. But for more money within your stated range, you can get stuff that sounds noticably better (...

Re: New headphones suggestions and comments

I've owned Sennheiser HD 280 Pro (still do, but they are relegated now to the family using them for TV when things need to stay quiet), and would highly recommend my current phones, Audio Technica ATH-M50 . They are very good sounding closed headphones. I don't know what's happened to the price thou...

Re: Age of Empires III: Complete Collection - $.10

I picked up a copy yesterday, too, but the GFW Marketplace keeps crashing hard just a percent or so into the download. At least once I had to restart the computer to get rid of the non-responsive program... And I still can't get it downloaded, CD key or not.

Re: Enter here for a chance to win a free Just Cause 2 license

My first computer build was a 386DX/33, back in the day (ca 1991 as best I recall). But this story is of my first upgrade, to the 286 machine I bought new from Swan/Tussey Computers in 1988 for about US$2200. (Allowing for 4% inflation per year, that's about $5200 in current dollars.) I researched t...

I have really, really wanted to like this game. I've installed it 2-3 times to try it out. But it gives me a headache very quickly each time I try and I end up deleting it again... :(

These Papst from BG Micro are pretty insanely cheap right now ($1.49 each) (BGM has flat rate $6 shipping for up to 2 pounds; I paid $8.40 for about 9 pounds = 10 fans). The description says they were removed from equipment, but mine appear unused. There's a thread on these at Arstechnica now... -M...

Let's see - to start with, about 1977, my dad had a Burroughs machine at his accounting business. It typed on paper, both black and red ink! Then we progressed to a TRS-80 with whatever built-in graphics came with it. My first computer all of my own was a C64 in 1983, with its built-in graphics. 198...

We've had two of the 17" Sceptres for about a year and a half - have been fine - a little backlight leakage around the edges, but not too objectionable, and no dead pixels that I've noticed.

I got a set of Altec Lansing FX6021 speakers and really like them a lot. CompUSA had them recently for $150. Newegg has been selling them for about $180 plus shipping.

They look a little bit gimicky, but sound fantastic to me. (link to my review at Ars)

Hey, it's faster than the Celeron 466 that I have in the spare computer :D It dual boots Win98 and MS DOS 6.2 (and even runs Win 3.1 8) ) and contributes the very occasional result to my SETI@Home stats. Right now it's the only machine I have that will run Mechwarrior 3 Titanium - it's worth keeping...

If you're on a PC, I still love Need for Speed - Porsche Unleashed -- loads of fun :)

F1 2002 and F1 Challenge '99-'02 are both great, and have lots of mods available online.

NASCAR Racing 2002 and 2003 Season by Sierra/Papyrus are very good.

Live for Speed is good.

Here's the inside of my 1.5 year old Antec Smart Power 400w supply that came with a SX1040BII case. Unfortunately for any warranty claims, I didn't notice these until I'd opened the unit to put in a quieter fan. Now I'm using a Seasonic 400w unit. I also had several bad caps on an EPoX 8RDA+.
