Re: The Ryzen 2200G and Ryzen 5 2400G CPUs

pssh. AMD CPUs have historically been pretty poor at knowing(reporting) their own temps, so I doubt temps affect their primitive clock balancing.

BTW. Has the AMD CPU temp reporting issues been fixed with Zen?

Not saying you should give up, but Powercolor has good customer service in my past experience. If you run out of options, it's RMA time. Let them decide if their GPU is faulty or not.

It also amazes me how often Intel chipsets/memory controllers have very odd gotchas Yeah, like having to pay a premium for Samsung B-Die RAM and/or being limited to 2 sticks of RAM to achieve even DDR4-3200....(ahem...AMD Ryzen) Not saying Intel isn't without it's flaws, but its harder to predict x...

Did you completely uninstall all graphics drivers and reinstall? AMD driver installs give you the option of a clean install, which is a good place to start, but even that doesn't uninstall EVERYTHING.

Re: Is overclocking safe

General rule of thumb: As long as you're not increasing voltage, overclocking is "safe" and relatively simple. Keep in mind that most mobos supply auto voltage, so if you OC, your mobo will likely increase the voltage automatically. You'll have to make BIOS adjustments to counteract/preven...

Battlefield-1 has been on my wishlist for over a year and I'll probably get it next time EA does a large discount. Not sure if you're a single player or multiplayer person. The single player campaign(s) were decent but short (about 12 hours in total for a "sneaky" play-through). Multiplay...

Re: DELL PC3-12800 memory upgrade

I've never ran into a RAM compatibility issue (as long as you've got the correct generation: DDR2/DDR3/DDR4). That said, in my personal opinion, Kingston is typically the best bet for compatibility. Add: Do a quick check of the voltage of the existing and new RAM. Most DDR3-1600 is 1.5V, but doesn't...

Re: Need help to do a parts-list to upgrade my PC

I agree with JAE, that Inspiron 3668 is 4x the computer in the OP, and can be useful for at least another 4 years. It also doesn't need any add-ons to do what you're asking, even then you could slap a new PSU in there and a decent GPU and have yourself a nice cheap gaming PC if needed. TBH, I don't ...

Pretty sure you don't need to even have the CPU installed to update the BIOS on recent Asus boards. (see Asus USB BIOS Flashback)

In fact, most mobo manufacturers offer this feature nowadays.

I look at it this way. I'm saving a reject chip from the dumpster. Just cuz the old boy got a hitch in his step doesn't mean he can't live out a happy life. Obviously there are still some "cut down" chips that have perfectly functioning disabled resources in order to make enough supply sto...

How tech savvy are you? I'd get the 128GB laptop, then buy and install my own 500GB SSD. Installing windows 10 on a new OS drive for a computer that already had Win10 activated is pretty straightforward and free. I've got quite a few large games installed on my 500GB SSD with room to spare. If not, ...

Re: games on hard drive or state drive?

Same answer as above. If you're only working with 128GB SSD then you'll want to move your user files (My Documents/Pictures/Videos/etc) to the hdd (you can re-target the windows explorer shortcuts to point to the hdd also so it's seamless). Then it comes down to the games you play. A couple modern 4...

https://www.ibuypower.com/ is another boutique builder option like cyberpower. Those two are my go-to. The only thing I don't like about them is that they're super RGB-everything, flashy cases, decent but not great PSU choices, typically stock/factory GPUs, and it's either full ATX behemoths, or a ...

My IVB AsRock board only offers a "CPU target temp" in the BIOS, so I doubt the OPs SB mobo has anything better than that.

@OP, have you tried any 3rd party software, like SpeedFan?

That's certainly a possibility (and definitely more common to control case fan speeds off the CPU temp), I just hoped Dell had a little more common sense when they were setting up fan controls for this particular case.

Re: Fan in workstation turns at Very High Speed and making loud noise

Buy a replacement. If it's the top fan, then a fixed RPM fan should be fine. There are endless choices. It looks like a 120mm fan to me, so this Cougar fan for $12 would fit the bill. ( Black version also available ) One concern I have is why this fan is spinning up and no others are. The fan is pro...

Good suggestions here already, so I'll just put in another vote for the i7-8700. Jet.com has the non-K version for $310, that shouldn't be hard to shave $50 off other areas of the build if you're up against your budget wall.

If not, the i5-8600K is no slouch. 6 cores will last a good long time.

I'm notorious for over striking splitting mauls I bought a fiberglass handled maul a while back and it's lasted many years without a hint of damage. Wood handles were not ideal. If you're going to buy a GPU that's sub-par for your monitor resolution you might as well just hold on to your existing GPU. Not sure if this option is available for the 7950, but in AMD graphics settings there a setting called "Wait for Vertical Refresh" and one of the drop-down options i...

Re: Need Advice for Building a PC Tower for 4K Home Entertainment Use

Build looks good to me.

Couple last minute considerations:
Since you're dropping the dGPU, how about 16GB RAM for $170 (promo code EMCPERS55 ends 1/29)
I think the WD Blue SSD is a fine drive, but the Crucial MX500 is a few bucks cheaper and a touch faster (not that you're likely to notice)
