Re: Power supply question for new build

The Silverstone ML08 requires SFX or SFX-L power supplies.

Re: OK I finally had with binge drinking soda.

I've been getting into cold-brew coffee lately (although I'm not a "coffee drinker", and I only like cold coffee). It's childishly easy to make in a french press (although I've moved to making it in a gallon glass growler and running it through a coffee filter which is a bit time consuming...

Re: Need expert help on first computer build (1)

If you are doing a new build, and from the sound of what you will be doing, and if you will be moving on to more advanced stuff later on, then you are better off just getting a i5-8400 with 32GB of DDR4-2666 and don't overclock if you doing any type of professional work with this build. This would ...

Re: Need expert help on first computer build (1)

The i3-8350K is the same price, has the same # of cores (4C/4T), and actually has a higher frequency than the i5-7600K. FYI. Not sure why you're so committed to previous gen CPUs. here's a comparison of the features of the Asus B250F gaming and a couple mATX Z370 boards. Someone correct me if I'm wr...

Re: Dose 1080p 60hz monitor need GTX 1060, or 1050 ti is enough?

This question can probably be covered in your system build forum thread. I don't know much about Pro Evo Soccer 2018 (not a terribly common game it sounds like), but TR reviewed the GTX1060 6GB in Witcher 3 (which is likely much more demanding that Pro Evo Soccer 2018) at 2560x1440 resolution and UL...

Re: Legal issues with being on Disablity

That's the problem with the system. By the sound of it, you don't seem to suffer much in terms of "severe lack of motivation" (WebMD). I'd hazard a guess that you may in fact be able to work, which can oftentimes instill a feeling of purpose, self - worth, and pride.... all things that wou...

What's your disability that's preventing you from working? There are a lot of opportunities for people to work from their computer without even leaving home. My brother-in-law does this.

Work is a way to give life purpose.

The R9-280X does not support FreeSync. Fair warning.
Neither does your 7850.

Re: Need expert help on first computer build (2)

Can you explain why you need 2 PCs when you're the same thing on both except different resolution monitor? BTW, the i5-8600K has 6 full cores for $280 and will boost up to 4.3GHz if you don't want to spend all the way up to an i7-8700K. Again on this build, what are you needing (feature-wise) in a $...

Re: Need expert help on first computer build (1)

Well, the Asus Strix B250F Gaming is certainly one of the most expensive non-overclocking mobos on the market.... but what features does that get you over a more commonly priced B250/H270 board in the $90 range? When overclocking isn't on the table, you pick out a mobo that offers the features you N...

Re: Need expert help on first computer build (1)

GTX1050 < RX560 < GTX 1050Ti << RX570 GTX 1060 6GB = RX 580 8GB (this tier sounds like overkill for your needs) Is there a reason you prefer an ATX mobo and case instead of a smaller mATX (or even mITX) mobo and case? [Add] I should also caution you that (historically) when someone asks for build ad...

My neighbor shared this nugget with me a couple months ago. Anyone hate those annoying dried water splotches you get when you wash your car in the driveway? It's annoying, especially on the windshield. Wet a (clean) rag with white vinegar and wipe those pesky spots right off!! This was a "duh&q...

FYI, spraying a (unpowered of course) connection with white vinegar will easily dissolve any of that white DC electrical corrosion. Just a little trick my dad always used for his boat trailer.

White vinegar is a miracle cleaning fluid.

1) Dad should always have better stuff than the kids. Kids get hand-me-downs, not the other way around  2) Nvidia is a great choice for the HTPC since the TV won't have variable refresh (G-Sync/FreeSync) and they use less power (produce less heat) than AMD at a given performance point. 3) I def...

Re: New monitor/video card decisions

Can you further explain why you think the HTPC needs a GPU upgrade? Is the 280X not cutting it for the kids? Only reason I ask is because it has the potential to steal budget from upgrading your PC. FWIW, a 280X is roughly proportional to a GTX1050Ti/RX560 (possibly a smidge better than those cards,...

Re: Intel i7-8700 vs 8700k

Yeah, even in GPU reviews, the rankings and/or performance gap between each GPU doesn't really change when you flip between 99th% and Average. This is because AMD and Nvidia and game devs have basically fixed the frame time variance problem that Scott discovered way back when. I'd go so far as to sa...

Re: Intel i7-8700 vs 8700k

Depends on how serious you are at video editing and transcoding and how much you're willing to give up in the gaming department. The 6C/6T i5-8600K is a pretty good all-around processor at a nice price.

Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

Not cheaper enough to cover a discreet GPU Pentium G4560 = $80 and there are decent mobos with 4 RAM slots for $65 - $75. Ryzen 3 offers 4c/4t that can be OC'd though. That's a good value add, especially if you can stick to the budget with a dGPU that's going to be more powerful than the Intel IGP.

Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

Why not just get a NUC? "Budget system without much gaming" is the ideal use case for an i3 or i5 mini PC. This was my first thought too. Seems like the perfect use case. VESA Mount? The Intel NUC base is/comes with a VESA mount. I think most NUC sized mini PCs offer VESA mounting capabil...

I'm a bit confused at the "no gaming" statements and yet the discussion of DOTA2/LoL (which obviously a VERY low requirements). So they don't want their kid playing games on his own computer.... but DOTA2 and LoL are okay? (this is a very foreign concept for me since I can't picture any ki...

Re: Econo box with less gaming focus

I like the build as-is (try to push for fastest RAM budget allows). The RX550 will give it some gaming oomph, the 256GB SSD isn't too restrictive (like a 120GB would be), everything is well balanced IMO. How soon is the purchase? We're quickly approaching black friday week. That's one of the best ti...

I know, but people are using high-density ECC DIMMs to burn my balls, so I'm having to admit defeat on the server tier side of things (even though, as shown above, you could stuff twice as many SODIMMs into the same size server mobo)
