Re: Fire Extinguisher PC

Oooh. Yeah, that's a bit too far on the extreme, but I realize that going for a high pressure fan is essential if I'm going to have any hope at success. I don't need it to push all of its rated airflow into the case. I just need it to generate enough pressure to push enough out through the restricte...

Re: Fire Extinguisher PC

Any ideas on what amount of air movement I might need (CFM)? I'm now looking at an i5-8600K (AM4 boards have their 8-pin CPU power plug too close to the back) and the aforementioned GTX1060. There are a couple factors in play as I see it: The entire cylinder is only .26 cubic feet in volume (6"...

Re: Laptop turns off suddenly

Your logic is sound. Whenever I see system crashes, my first suspect is RAM. And by staying out of the OS, you're eliminating any hard drive corruption from the equation. I n this situation though, it sounds like the laptop wont stay on long enough, even under these "perfect" conditions, f...

Memtest won't find much if the computer wont stay on in the BIOS for more than 20 minutes.

Then how about a 3.5" bay adapter?
**that particular one was just the first result in my Google search as a proof-of-concept

Also, note all the other models on that front panel replacement support list.

Re: Laptop turns off suddenly

The reason we've been suggesting extraction of the hard drive is to eliminate the hardware-related issues (ie overheating/etc) coming from the laptop itself. That gives you the best chance at recovering your data because even if the file system that's being accessed by Windows to run the OS is corru...

Re: Laptop turns off suddenly

While some of your problems are indeed a result of a corruption in the file system, I'm not confident that installing a new hard drive will alleviate all your problems. And it's certainly not worth the hassle considering you can buy a better laptop for about £300

Re: Ordered a 1080 from Newegg....

Yeah the Ncase M1 can take cards up to 4.37" tall (an increasing size concern) by 12.5" long, or 5.5" x 11.5" I think that covers a vast majority of dual fan cards and even some of the triples.

Either way, the Zotac card is already on its way.

You're fine. Enjoy the upgrade. You can bounce over to other TR threads on the RTX 20xx (like this one) if you're looking for people's opinion on the ray tracing stuff.

Re: Laptop turns off suddenly

Extract the hard drive. Throw away the laptop. Buy a USB-SATA converter ( cable type , enclosure type , or dock type ) so you can retrieve your data. Buy a new laptop. The old one is past its useful life expectancy anyway. Don't waste any more time/money on it. Heck, would a cheap Chromebook suffice?

Stuck at 2GHz even at idle?
I don't have immediate access to my "managed" Core2 machines, and I know you couldn't increase the multiplier in BIOS, but could you reduce it? Have you checked the CPU frequency settings in the BIOS to make sure everything is kosher?

Re: Laptop turns off suddenly

24C is 75F. Your CPU will always be warmer than room temp, even when idle, so I wouldn't trust the temp very much. Also, there are other chips on the motherboard that, when overheating, could cause a computer to shut down. Back in the day I had a Northbridge (or was it Southbridge..can't remember wh...

Re: Laptop turns off suddenly

You can search laptop disassembly videos on youtube. They're all the same. Undo all the screws on the bottom, then start prying between the interface of the top and bottom halves of the chassis (I recommend fingernails or a plastic knife to prevent marring the seam). Some of the older laptop models ...

Re: Fire Extinguisher PC

The one I'm getting carries a $25 asking price. I definitely considered flipping it. I will absolutely be mocking the build inside a PVC or cardboard tube before I touch the extinguisher, just in case everything doesn't fit as expected (I did mock up the whole thing in CAD though). Also, I was racki...

Re: Fire Extinguisher PC

Using the hose knob for a fan controller could be fun (open the knob for more airflow). I'm not sure what the red lever/knob on the right side does, but I might be able to fashion that into the power button instead. The T-handle acts like a bicycle pump to pressurize the tank and is currently approx...

Re: Fire Extinguisher PC

A 120mm AIO rad doesn't fit inside the radius of the canister. The reservoir(s) are too big. The high air resistance of a rad is also not ideal for using that one fan to blow air through the whole canister. I need velocity so that the GPU fan isn't eating its own excrement.

Re: Curved Screens General Impressions + How does it look with 3?

I've been using my single 27" 1800R screen for almost a year, I also use a flat 27" with a flat 24" outrigger at work. It's not much different going from flat to curved, even on a daily basis.

Re: Laptop turns off suddenly

As others have said, the battery is probably done. But the machine should still run while connected to AC power. As you've discovered, that may require removing the battery so the machine isn't trying to "run off the battery while it's charging" I think it's multiple problems, but I'd agre...

Has anyone here played Dying Light? It's a first person zombie survivor game. I'd say it's the best zombie game I've played to date, although my list is admittedly short. But I'd easily put it above Dead Island which is the most recent zombie game I've played before Dying Light. It's got: Parkour ru...

Re: TR Frankenbot 2018; wow, is it that time already?

I've done it for the whole month on my RX480 twice already. With a proper voltage curve, it doesn't really pull much more juice at stock frequency than a GTX1060. I've been wanting to try to play around with frequency tuning to see how much ppd you lose per MHz (ie for crypto you can really downcloc...

Re: Phone dies when put in a pocket

There's an option to turn the screen off when in your pocket or when you lay your phone screen-down on a table. That might also disable "accidental touch input" in the same situations (or that would be a separate setting). Try turning off those features.

Had to look when I got home. My Milwaukee is a 1200W. Biggest concern to me is weight, especially in situations like this where she may not be grinding in a consistent and comfortable position. A lighter tool can drastically reduce arm fatigue. A pound makes all the difference. The more "indust...

Re: What angle grinder wattage for marble work?

I'm with Superspy. Both wattages will to the trick. Obviously higher wattage will let you get more aggressive, but more power generally comes at the cost of more tool weight. Also, too high of wattage can become unsafe depending on the physique of the user. Sometimes it's nice to know you can overpo...
