Re: i5 6500 Crashes when idle

FWIW, Memtest86 has since had a couple of single bit errors, but IDK if that's actually the RAM or what. I'm not done with letting it run yet, will see when I have more data There ya go, bad RAM or bad RAM settings. That Prime95 also had rounding errors pretty much confirms it. True statement. I in...

My advice would be to start your own forum thread about this. It's not related to the topic of this thread.

Re: Share Your GPU Undervolt

It goes upto 1.313V at [1340MHz]. You'd probably be able to run 1340MHz @ 1.100 mV if you manually set voltages. Probably start and see if you can do 1340MHz @ 1.150V first and back down from there. See my first post in this thread for guidelines. Setting a manual voltage curve will likely save you...

Re: New Ryzen build in a Fractal Nano S

IMO, one of the Kaby Lake 2c/4t Pentiums are the best choice for an HTPC machine at this time if you're using a dGPU. AND there are multiple mITX motherboards to pick from. I considered updating my HTPC with a Kaby Lake Pentium, but I'm waiting to see what the Raven Ridge APUs look like. I'd strongl...

That stock voltage curve is odd. My RX480 ASIC quality is 80.1% (FWIW) and can do 1305MHz at 1030mV, but that's not the ragged edge. Generously say they got a ~3% process efficiency improvement with Polaris 20. Basically insignificant. Once you finish your testing, maybe post results in the GPU unde...

For the past ~4 years I've been using the Crest Spinbrush Sonic and I'd highly recommend it. Prior to that I used the Spinbrush/Spinbrush Pro/etc for 10+ years, but I feel that the sonic version does a better job. The Spinbrush Sonic replacement heads are a bit tough to find. IIRC Target is the only...

A desktop might work, but is definitely disadvantageous, and there's no display already there to plug it into. Consider something like a refurb tower for $235 gets you an i5-3470, 8GB RAM, 500GB hdd, Win10, and a keyboard/mouse. I get monitors from my local e-waste recycling center for $30 each. Ma...

Too power hungry for NAS. Plus, if you needed a NAS, you probably would've built one by now. You're just coming up with excuses for this machine to keep sucking on the electricity bill. See if you can pawn it off on craigslist or ebay.

A $400 budget is horribly restrictive for anything with a dGPU. new i5-7200U and GeForce 940MX with 1080p screen for $480 or refurb i5-6200U and GeForce 940MX with 256GB SSD and 1080p screen for $455. Given increasing densities of NAND, you don't even get to "maximum" performance until at least 240/256GB anymore because there aren't enough dies for parallelization(word?). You're absolutely right that even the cheapest SSD will be more responsive than a mechanical hdd that has 10x more s...

Is that only 1 intake and 2 exhaust fans? It's typically better to have more airflow coming in than out so that the air is forced through the filters instead of being sucked in through other (unfiltered) openings. Like EndUser said, you could experiment with the AIO at the front above the existing c...

5 out of the 7 Ryzen CPUs are doing battle in the budget of Intel's consumer chips. That's what I'm getting at. I'd be surprised if their APUs have more than 4 cores/threads.

IIRC, Pascal "boost" clocks are a loose term since the chip will oftentimes ramp itself far higher than advertised. The higher tier cards will have better coolers, but I'm not sure how much extra I'd spend as you're going up the stack. But heck, if you're already spending a grand, what's a...

If it's one thing Ryzen has brought is a fire under Intel's arse. For so long Intel seems to have been focused on improving their IGP on each generation with little/no improvement to core function (which is fine for laptops/mobile, but stagnant for desktop use). I think Ryzen is an outdated design m...

You would be better off with 2x16 GiB than with 4x8 GiB. I recommend 2 sticks to start only because it's inevitable that more RAM will be added later in life. But hey, move 2x8GB sticks to another machine and toss in a 2x16GB kit when needed (maybe we'll have 32GB sticks by then, who knows). No har...

If you were using the IGP before and the BIOS was set to "hybrid", a mode in which you can use both the mobo and the graphics card's display outputs, then it's probably still try to show you the BIOS screen on the IGP's output. This. Or the possibility that the graphics mode (IGP or dGPU)...
