Re: Dedicated Kinect 2 Host PC

I apologize for not having enough time to actually confirm my comments with references. Again (IIRC) you'll see ASMedia controllers on boards with USB3.1c since that's currently the only way to offer that connectivity. It might be helpful to just talk about a specific board as an example. The AsRock...

Re: Overclocking CPU (Ivy Bridge) and RAM

CPU: Like others said, you can probably hit 4.7 with a bit more vcore. If instability hits before you get there, LLC adjustments can help. RAM: You might get 1866 out of a 1600 kit, but 2000 is probably a stretch. When OCing RAM, make sure you're considering the effect that loosening timings to get ...

Re: Dedicated Kinect 2 Host PC

USB3.0 is native on the CPU now, no controller on the mobo IIRC.

Re: Dedicated Kinect 2 Host PC

Kinect 2 uses a single USB3.0 connection. IIRC both the AM4 300 series and Intel 200 series mobos can drive at least 8 USB3.0 devices at full bandwidth concurrently. That wouldn't push you out of mITX territory. The Silverstone SG05 is a nice case. If you want something more rectangular, the Silvers...

Re: Everything look kosher with this build?

Seasonic G Series are pretty dated as far as hybrid fan operation is concerned (don't get me wrong, they're still high quality PSUs). Even the Seasonic XP series had full-off fan control (S 3 FC) back in 2012. That's something I looked for when I bought my EVGA 550 G2 which could actually operate fa...

Re: Everything look kosher with this build?

On MSI cards, if the Gaming X version is the same price at time of purchase, definitely go with that. IMO, thermal paste selection is more of a consistency preference. AS5 may not be the "best" product out there anymore, but I do like it's work-ability. It's been a while since I've researc...

Re: Everything look kosher with this build?

If you look into 3200MHz RAM, make sure you're getting Samsung B-Die chips. AFAIK, that's the only way to get to 3200MHz on Ryzen.

Ugh, full ATX......

Re: Which budget case?

I don't necessarily have anything to add except to echo JAE's recommendations. The Fractal Focus G Mini and the Corsair 88R cases would be my top picks. All three cases use basically the same internal layout, but the Fractal and Corsair have fan filters.

Re: Darn it, Equifax!

Not sure if anyone else has said this, but what if this whole breach was cooked up by Equifax and/or related parties. Just think of all the credit monitoring revenue this has generated, especially to Equifax when the 1 year free monitoring expires and people renew their subscription.

Re: First build parts advice needed

Can you provide a rough budget? Most of the time there's always a budget. Even if someone says they are carte-blanche, they may have a hard time swallowing a $5,000+ price tag. For example, a nice monitor alone could cost you $1,000. The monitor (resolution/frequency) typically drives the majority o...

Re: Help Picking New Router

Hmm. I'll try a hard reset tonight. So far, power cycling the unit has fixed the WiFi drops, but it's still annoying to just lose WiFi randomly. To my knowledge, LAN remains active even when the WiFi cuts out. It's not a big deal to me to set up the router since I really don't have any special setti...

Re: Help Picking New Router

I think the hardest thing is figuring out what do I NEED. As I stated previously, the only device I really care about in terms of bandwidth is my main PC which is connected via powerline, so that's a non-issue. My HTPC sits right next to my router, so that's wired also. Everything else (wife's lapto...

Re: Help Picking New Router

So, brands to look at: Asus, Netgear, TPLink, Linksys. Of those brands, is it just a matter of selecting a price point and comparing features? Ranges will be similar? Is MU-MIMO worthwhile? Might be outside my price point, but just wondering. I don't typically have a lot of devices (that I care abou...

I've always wanted to build an SG05 system. Not sure what the OP thinks about having to replace their PSU with an SFX one though. Something Like the CM-Elite 130 would allow the use of an ATX PSU.

I too have been a Steam user for years and have never participated in a hardware survey. I can't imagine Steam compiles automated lists of their user's hardware configs, so the steam hardware survey must be voluntary, right? At least as far as TR's most recent hardware survey from 2014 shows AMD and...

I would like to hop on the 802.11ac train and 4 gigabit ethernet jacks. Other than that, I just want something that's has good signal range and is reliable. Help Picking New Router

My DLink DIR655 is in the process of kicking the bucket. She had a good 4 year run for $55. I'll admit I'm not terribly up to snuff with routers/networking, so I figured I'd tap the gerbil collective. I would like to hop on the 802.11ac train and 4 gigabit ethernet jacks. No problem. I thought you meant you already owned DDR4, which would suggest you have a newer system already, making it more cost-efficient to simply replace the mobo and GPU. At the very least saving the cost of a new CPU. Carry on!

I'm currently playing XCOM2 and enjoying it. Apparently it's up there on the all-time list of most hours of gameplay available. There are intermittent periods of difficulty and ease, which is nice. Makes you plan out your upcoming moves and in what order to shoot, etc.
