Re: What are you drinking RIGHT NOW?

Bruichladdich's Port Charlotte Islay Barley Heavily Peated. I haven't found the right ratio of water to whisky to really enjoy this yet. It reminds me of a peaty Highland Park 12... not my favorite, but it'll do in a pinch. edit: a reviewer said to drink it straight despite the higher strength, and...

Re: dymt reloaded

Or is wanting something that looks stock (just works/does the basics) but has an AUX jack - the only reason I'm thinking about replacements - too much to ask? (On second thoughts, the CD changer option in those Civics runs an analog signal into the main unit. There's gotta be a way to fool it into ...

Re: Has anyone eaten Lardo before?

I've had it before at a Spanish tapas restaurant. It was hard to believe what I was eating, because it was so different than what I was expecting. Not saying it was bad, but it was very different.

Re: dymt reloaded

We set the RSVP deadline to be two weeks before we needed to get a final number to the caterer, which was a little more than a month before that wedding. We spent those two weeks calling up family and inquiring if they were coming. Somehow all of our Gen-X friends managed to respond by the deadline....

You probably need to enable VT-d in the BIOS as well. Next step is to go and grab yourself the VirtualBox Windows installer from their web site. Alternatively, if your Win 8.1 box is Pro or Enterprise, you can just go under programs & features and enable Hyper-V. It's slightly less annoying abo...

Re: Considering a full-frame DSLR

On mobile now, so this'll be short. It looks like you're giving up a bit of capability on the wide end if you ditch all your EF-S glass. The FOV of the 17-55 is similar to the 24-70, but unless you get the 16-35L you have no equivalent for the 10-22. Plus, you lose macro capabilities. Additionally m...

Re: dymt reloaded

one of bits of software doesn't work in IE: one is stuck on IE8, and one requires the latest version of IE. Thankfully most employees don't need the application that requires IE8, but I do and I need access to all of the stuff for my reporting. I'm sick of this crap. It is 2015. One handy trick for...

Re: Sony A6000 - Wait or buy now - (not waterproof)

IIRC correctly (on phone now, and if rather not look it up) the A6000 came out around October do it shouldn't be due for a refresh before August. Now is probably as good a time as any to buy. That being said, what sports are you shooting? The A6000 AF might be improved enough over the A7 to work for...

Re: Formula 1 2015

I mean, the 8-ish second gap from Hamilton to Vettel (before the safety car) is a lot better than last years 24 second gap from Hamilton to Alonso. I don't think Mercedes was overly challenged this race, though Rosberg seemed a bit peeved at the end, but Ferrari is a bit closer than RBR was last sea...

Re: Formula 1 2015

I'm excited to see how McLaren develops. Their pace wasn't exactly impressive, but they've seen some big reliability gains (they finished! unlike 1/2 the Renault cars...) while also gaining pace. Judging by Kvyat and Riccardio's little spat, RBR isn't the happiest place to be either... I'm also exci...

I cooked my corned beef in the pressure cooker, then added the veggies in at the end. Came out extremely tender and better than what my parents make, though they don't need to know that. I had come to love GNOME 2 when it got EOLed and focus shifted to the less functional and much buggier GNOME 3. KDE had gone through a similar transition a year or two prior, but KDE 4 was finally stabilizing, so I became a KDE guy. Over the past couple of years I've learned how to bend KDE to my w...

Re: dymt reloaded

I just switched to FF from Chrome. Chrome was taking forever on start-up and using huge amounts of memory. Once it hit 3GB on a single process I decided it was time to switch. Well... that's definitely not normal. I just timed how long it takes to start up for me, and it is taking ~3 seconds. Yes, ...

Re: Formula 1 2015

This season is shaping up to be fun! Hopefully McLaren figures out their reliability issues. Ferrari's performance is impressive, though I do wonder about fuel load and engine mapping. IIRC, they did well in pre-race practice near the end of last season, but that didn't always carry over to qualifyi...

Another Brother B&W laser user here. I don't bother with printing color at home. On that note - I should add that my parents have a Brother MFC-9840CDW color laser. ... Only gone through 20K or so pages on it and a few high capacity cartridges, but we're had to replace quite a few things on it....

I have a multipurpose, black and white, Brother laser (DCP-7065DN or something like that). It's been rock solid for 4 years now, and is used by many of my friends for black and white printing (college student, lots of reading). With the original toner, it did an excellent job printing resumes and ot...

Interesting essay on exposure from Luminous Landscape

http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/the_optimum_digital_exposure.shtml Came across this today while reading through the Fred Miranda forums. The idea is to set your exposure so that everything is as far to the right (over exposed) as possible without blowing the brightest point of the image, ev...

Re: need a new point and shoot camera

Just note that Sony's kit lens, while 'effective' optically as well as being small and light, will not be close to maximizing the image quality of a modern Sony sensor. What are good alternatives? Using the older Minolta lenses you will lose autofocus with a photographer (if you can call her that) ...

I know myself well enough to say that I will use software only in an emergency. A solution as simple as applying a consistent adjustment to the AWB for every image would be acceptable to me, but I'm definitely not one to take the time to apply individual adjustments to every photo. Judging from you...

Re: White balance

Auto white balance is usually not the best, but still better than picking one white point and going with it all the time. I shoot RAW on my a7, but find auto is usually close enough that I don't need to do a ton of work to get it where I want. Often, I'll bump it up by 150-200K afterwards if I'm sho...

I use filters for storage, as it keeps dust off of the front element. I try to remember to take them off before I go out shooting, especially if I'm shooting at night. Aventinus! I should probably tend towards cheaper beers, but at $4 a bottle, and two glasses out of the bottle, it's still less expensive than a bar! Cider fans, if you're in VA (or NC, or MD) I highly recommend Bold Rock cider. The Virginia Apple is a bit drier than the Virginia Draft, but both are...
