Re: Would it make sense to replace a GTX 560 Ti with GT 1030?

My concern with getting a GTX 1050 (Ti) is that they are overkill for this aging PC and will be outdated by the time I rebuild it. There is also the issue of the motherboard having only gen 2.0 PCI-E slots, I assume the physical dimensions are the same with these cards but I seem to recall that the ...

Re: Would it make sense to replace a GTX 560 Ti with GT 1030?

It's not worth getting the GTX 1050 ti or better since it's an old system that would be bottlenecked by the CPU which is a Phenom quad core. The games I play are what now would be considered retro like Counter Strike, Left4Dead and other source engine based games. I only need a GTX 560 ti equivalent...

Would it make sense to replace a GTX 560 Ti with GT 1030?

Hello, I have an older PC with a GTX 560 ti that is acting up and I'm looking for a replacement. I don't play any demanding games on it so I was thinking that anything that is about equivalent from the low end side would work fine. Can the GT 1030 perform about the same or is a lot weaker? Can't rea...

They released the video of the run

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcepG9Twa_8

Regarding Formula E, it's expected that in season 5, meaning at the end of next year, it will run on a single charge on account of almost doubling the energy storage capacity.

Re: NIO EP9 is now the fastest supercar?

The problem with the NIO EP9 record is that it's not even a street-legal supercar. Somewhere I've seen someone pointing out that it beat the Pagani Zonda R, but if you're including street-illegal cars, that's not the car to beat . The car to beat would be the Porsche 956, which set a 6:11.13 on the...

NIO EP9 is now the fastest supercar?

Weird, an all electric car is now the fastest hypercar to have lapped the Nürburgring, at 6 minutes and 45 seconds beating their own previous time of 7:05 from late last year . Who would have thought, combustion cars are slow now. http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars/future-cars/news/a33485/nio-ep9-...

Re: Can't install drivers.

I seem to recall that the HD 7000 series had black screens issues but they were due to the drivers. Does anyone remember? Artifacts were not part of the issue though and while it could be caused by other things it's mostly likely the video card going bad. Try using the IGP or another video card and ...

Re: UPS or Powewall like energy storage?

Grid energy storage is likely to diverge away from lithium ion batteries, though it could be a small percentage at lower sub TWh scale. The most likely approach to grid storage will be to use what makes sense for each region and scale of energy produced. It doesn't make sense to use pumped hydro nea...

Re: UPS or Powewall like energy storage?

If your current electric service is unreliable enough that you feel a need for a UPS now, just get a UPS. I don't see why you need to tie that decision to whether you plan to eventually go with a PowerWall-type device and solar panels. An affordable single-house solar solution is still years down t...

Re: UPS or Powewall like energy storage?

Assuming that the capital cost of the photovoltaic unit and the even larger cost of the storage system is of no consequence to you, UPS systems come in all sizes, up to those large enough to power a small city (e.g.: Fairbanks, AK) for as long as it takes to start up standby generators powered by d...

UPS or Powewall like energy storage?

Hello, I assume that some, if not most of you own or like the idea of having an energy storage system to prevent unplanned and sudden shut down devices due to power failure from the grid. Personally I'm thinking of buying an UPS but with the rise of energy storage systems like the Tesla Powerwall th...

Re: Is Linux getting easier to use then Windows?

Some Linux distributions are getting better and easier to use compared to older versions, but even compared to Windows 10, they are still more difficult and less intuitive. That said, they do allow the sort of control over the OS that Microsoft used to have but no longer promotes and if that is the ...

I too did not have spare parts as the old system was so old that nothing could be used. In my case, the motherboard was defective and I ended up changing it. I ...

Personally I'd suggest getting a 1080p monitor due to the fact that it's difficult to maintain a high enough fps to take advantage of a 144 Hz monitor at much higher resolutions. If you do decide to get a cheaper monitor, you can probably get a GTX 1080 with the money you save. I would suggest getti...

What games specifically are you running? If they are CPU intensive, a good enough GPU will perform just as well as a top of the line one with no measurable difference. If the games are DX 9, they are far more responsive to a CPU upgrade, assuming the starting video card was good enough and not under...

Aren't dead batteries pretty toxic on the environment too?  I was curious how (or if) that is being acknowledged/planned for. The environmental impact of dead batteries can be managed at human scales. Lithium oxide can be recycled at a rate of 99% and even if it wasn't it's not going to contribute ...

Re: Nuclear, Solar, & Wind Farms, Oh My!

There's one weird trick to make solar, wind and other intermittent energy sources more reliable than fossil, it's called energy storage. Coal miners hate it. The main energy storage solution right now is pumped hydro but it will be replaced eventually by batteries for a couple of reasons, mainly tha...

Realtek are notorious for multiple different versions of the same hardware that all have their own little gremlins. Having said that, I suspect the problem is more your PPPoE setup.
