MSI GE62 i7-6700HQ- too good to be true?

I am looking for a mobile workstation quality laptop. i tend to be that guy that has everything open on my computer at once. most of the docs we get from outside clients are scanned pdf's so docs quickly grow to 100+. On the side i do corporate photography of events processing raw images off my niko...

Re: Refilling inkjet cartridges

my understanding on the subject is laser jets are cheaper and more efficient for printing. the only reason to buy an inkjet these days is to print photography or art. while laser jets can keep up on detail they fall apart on fine color reproduction. i have an epson photo printer and use cone inks fr...

Re: another new monitor help thread

one of my concerns about going to something smaller like a 24 or 27 is that i have to read a lot of scanned docs for work. that was why i was even considering a tv as a monitor. does any have experience putting together a monitor combo for reading a lot of scanned docs? some are so bad OCR is not re...

another new monitor help thread

So it might be new monitor time. For the last ten years I have been using two 19” 1280*1024 LCD monitors. About five years ago I added a 27” 1080 monitor giving me three monitors. Now one of the 19’s is dying and I want to re-evaluate my options. I use the 27 for gaming and Nikon Capture NX2/Photosh...

i called your number and repeatedly put my credit card number, DOB and social security number in as prompted but i found your horoscopes to barely meet the standards of the NYT. i am going to have to rate your services at 3.5 stars and you should consider yourself lucky at that.

i an not a mac person so i was looking at the lenovo w540. it comes with either a 1080 or a 2880*1660 res screen and a build in color sensor but you are looking at $1,400. i process raw files from a d600 (24mp) on an old laptop with 16gb of memory and an ssd but that is more $$$. add a few layers or...

Re: Sigma 50/1.4 "Art" Lens review

Handheld, 24mm f/2.8 1/8 ISO10000 That is impressive for handheld. of course you would need f1.4 on a fifty to get the same control. Having a d600, it is amazing what we can do in high iso that we couldnt do just a few short years ago. my d80 was useless over iso400 and i remember how bad the grain...

Re: Sigma 50/1.4 "Art" Lens review

Speed man, speed. The sheer lack of which in the original 4/3 format means my daughter has a "school camera" and I need to find something else with speed. A 50/1.4 is not that fast... that is, you can pick up a manual focus 50/1.4 for $100 or less. i have to disagree. you need a 1.4 (35, ...

Re: Bourbon?

I like Knob Creek as a cheap (sub $20) staple bourbon. It has good bang for the buck. for a few dollars more i like wild turkey single barrel (or rare bread- i forget which is which). i hate makers mark but that is personal taste. scotch it harder. You need to stay with single malts of at least ten ...

Re: Raid for dumbies

i know i am seeing 120 mbs write speeds. Thats what see from my single WD greens. You could add more drives to your RAID 1 array to improve performance but from what I read that is up to the controller and not all controllers offer that performance increase. The more immediate concern is the 30 sec...

Re: Raid for dumbies

How much are your "work" images and how much are your other stuff that you could not care less (movies and music)? I would say buy a separate drive, move those off to the new drive, and stay with your current setup. You probably want to do serious work on the SSDs anyway. This new drive c...

Re: Raid for dumbies

i guess the other question is how raid-able is a WD black drive? i have read reports that the black drives will fail in anything more complicated than a mirror (i.e. stripe) or should i go to the constellation drives and not look back? and it sounds like a 3 disk raid 5 with 3 constellation drives i...

Re: Raid for dumbies

Have you figured out approximately how many MB/sec you're getting on the existing RAID-1? At the end of the day, unless you're running software RAID-5 or -6 (which can be limited by CPU speed), you're probably being bottlenecked by the transfer rate of the hard drives themselves, so a $150 RAID car...

i have the 5s and my wife has the 5. i find the 5s is faster, even internet. i know it is the same LTE signal. it just feels like my phone searches and renders must faster. of course her phone is over a year old so a fresh 5 might be faster than her phone.

Re: D600 - Where to buy

Seriously, every site you go to (even if you don't fully trust DxOMark, like me) shows the Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC as superior to the Nikon 24-70/2.8 II, and very close to the world-beating Canon 24-70/2.8 II. And that's just optically- it also has a very good implementation of stabilization. the tamro...

That is for an "Import Model" (see the yellow "what's in the box" button). No US warranty. It makes no mention of there being a EN-EL15 Lithium Battery in the box. All they say is "Lithium-ion Battery". you can get an en-el15 battery or two for $60 each. the if it is i...

there was some discussion about this store on dpreview. some say it is a bait & switch shop (i.e. this model doesn't come with a battery or they kept the kit lens). some say they dont bother telling you if stuff isnt in stock. others say they got their stuff. for that price i might pay my money ...
