Re: Weirdest Windows XP Boot Problem I've Seen

I think I misunderstood the original post, as I somehow thought I read that you had tried installing a separate Windows XP, as well. Yes, this is almost certainly MBR corruption. If you can boot into a Windows 7 installation disc, go to the Recovery Console. Run "fdisk /mbr" to have it rep...

Re: Weirdest Windows XP Boot Problem I've Seen

Machine specs? How long did Windows XP run without problems? Try adding "/sos" to the end of the boot entry in boot.ini. It disables the splash screen and shows you which drivers are loading when. My thought process on this: the video mode the splash screen uses has now become corrupted. I...

Re: Crysis 2 :(

How does somebody come up the name "fakealgore"? That's a good question. I was messing around on my clan's CS:S server back in 2006 changing my name to stupid **** for amusement. At one point, I put in [EtS] Al Gore. "You wouldn't headshot a former vice president, would you?" I ...

Re: LJA's UT2004 server

I picked this game up in a Steam sale about a year ago, and I've only played it with an IRL friend a few times (10 hours or less). We've been getting a bit bored with the vanilla gameplay, so I'm wondering what mods we've missed out on. I've tried the Killing Floor mod, but the real game is so much ...

Re: Crysis 2 :(

I will freely admit to being horribly stuck in one of the puzzles in Portal 2 for over an hour. I eventually gave up and Shift+Tab'd to the overlay, went to YouTube, and watched someone beat the level. I was comparing, and I knew I had done it right. So I Shift+Tab'd back and looked where he put his...

This gives you access to the health checks on all of the hardware and some remediation ability (limited).

Re: GeForce 8600GT vs modern Intel HD Graphics

This guy rates GPUs and CPUs. Unfortunately, he hasn't updated it with many of the 6000 series Radeons yet. The 8600 GT is an old and slow card. I think it was even low-end when it came out. Based on this chart , it looks like the Radeon HD 6450 is comparable in performance to a GeForce GT 220. On ...

Re: Critique my productivity build, pretty please?

I may the crazy guy in the corner on this one, but you have considered a MacBook Pro? You're already talking about upgrading to CS5, so buying the Mac OS X upgrade instead of the Windows upgrade wouldn't set you back any extra money. If you decide Windows is an absolute must, you can either use Boot...

Re: Trusteer Rapport - snake oil?

Rapport is one of the worst pieces of software I have ever had the displeasure of installing (and subsequently removing). It behaves more like malware than most of the software is purports to quarantine. On one user's PC, I had to recreate the user's profile because it kept re-installing itself (and...

Re: High temps on 2600K (new build)

I suppose my contention is that even at 100% single core NOP in BIOS it's not really going to test... anything. And might as well just ignore whatever "load" that is for the purposes of testing heat and all that. I don't think anyone's arguing that point. I just pointed out that temperatu...

Re: High temps on 2600K (new build)

I installed the new cooler last night (with quite a bit of swearing). My idle temps in the UEFI BIOS are now at 44°C +/- 2°C. That's a significant improvement, and I'm going to say this problem is solved. What's interesting to note is the idle temperature in Windows. It's at 40°C +/- 1°C. This leads...

Thanks for the tips, gbcrush and derFunkenstein. I was thinking along the same lines re: the chip not working if I had actually crushed something, and I'm glad to hear 65°C isn't an abnormal temperature for that setup. Either way, I'll still pick up the Hyper 212+ this afternoon and will post back w...

High temps on 2600K (new build)

I received all of the parts for my new build (see my final post in the thread) yesterday, and I assembled it excitedly. It powered on to the UEFI BIOS on the first try. But then I noticed the CPU temperature kept going up. It leveled off at 65°C at idle just in the BIOS. That just doesn't seem right...

MSE is a joke; it puts pointless and false alerts over programs that work just fine. I uninstalled it shortly and stuck with having only Avast. Avast also seems to work well in conjunction with Threatfire and ZoneAlarm firewall and all three are free. Could you provide an example of this? I haven't...

I'll second the dust bunnies vote. Open it up (being extremely careful where you place screws so you know where they go), get to the HSF unit, remove it, clean it. You can't really blow it out without removing it. I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 that was getting really slow for no reason. When I finall...

The only version that is completely DRM-free is from GOG. The Steam version will include Steam DRM, and the boxed version will include Sony's SecuROM in a limited form (mainly checking to make sure the release date has come before allowing it to be played).
