This is probably the place to start: http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ive-lost-my-firefox-sync-account-information Basically yes, you should have waited before wiping your hard drive and it's always a good idea to have a backup of anything important before you mess with partitions (whatever OS y...

Side Note, as a Windows PC tech for a local college, reading this article is an amazing example as to why Linux hasn't come anywhere close to breaking into the mainstream market. This is a tech savvy guy just trying to get one of the simplest versions of Linux running comfortably. This is an exampl...

If you don't have any other OSs installed grub doesn't ask you which to boot into it just does the default thing. You can force grub to show itself by holding the escape key before the bios screen disappears. Choose the "rescue" option nearest to top of the screen and then drop to the roo...

Re: Thinking of Ubuntu 12 or Linux mint 13 install, need adv

It's difficult to say without seeing your partition scheme, but you may need to re-install grub as the partition order has changed since your removal of the Windows partition. You can boot the Linux Mint live CD and open a terminal, then do the following: 1. First, check your partition scheme to fi...

Re: Thinking of Ubuntu 12 or Linux mint 13 install, need adv

I'm pretty sure the GRUB/ext4 issue is an old one, specific to legacy GRUB implementations which are no longer widely used in current distros. My desktop currently boots from an ext4 volume (on a software RAID-1 volume, no less), and this is even a much older version of Ubuntu (10.04) than the one ...

Re: Thinking of Ubuntu 12 or Linux mint 13 install, need adv

I read that ext2 should be used for Mint/Maya 13-Linux/Unix /boot rather than ext4 because of problems with Grub with ext4, is ext2 a better option for stability considering my system? Also, can I just skip the /home partition during install or would this cause instability-I think it would be better...

Re: Valve's Gabe Newell Talks Linux Steam Client, Source Eng

Linux doesn't have DirectX, because it's a Microsoft product. It has OpenGL, which is functionally equivalent, but you can't easily take a DirectX game and turn it into an OpenGL game. So MS refuses to support Linux in any fashion, trash. It is another market they could go into. Sell their products...

Re: Valve's Gabe Newell Talks Linux Steam Client, Source Eng

What does Linux lack that makes for games in Windows better. I read that it had something to do with 3d support among some other areas. If Linux developers incorporated 3d support right inside Linux that would eliminate the need for things like wine right? Or am I missing a much larger picture here.

Re: Thinking of Ubuntu 12 or Linux mint 13 install, need adv

You need to have a free partition and not just free space in your windows partition. If your partition currently takes up your whole drive you'll need to shrink it down. After you've installed Mint, you'll be prompted by the linux bootloader, GRUB, whether you want to boot to Mint or Windows. done ...

Hey Rambo, Having reviewed your specs and requirements, I heavily suggest sticking to Windows XP as your primary OS. You can dual boot into Linux to play around with the distros, but both Wine and gaming in VMware will run terribly slow with that video card. If you have any intention of running Win...

CLI is not some sort of a magic bullet or something. It's handy for some tasks, but it's not a do it all environment. As much as I love Linux, if running commercial PC games is part of your use case, you probably *don't* want to run Linux as your primary OS. Yes, there are a few commercial games that have native Linux ports, and some Windows games will run acceptably under Wine (or other forms of emulation); but g...

Does NVidia 301.42 drivers damage your hardware?

I have read on several different forums that the new 301.42 NV drivers damage/could damage the hardware/graphics card over long run times or while under load and running for a long time. Has anyone seen any actual data that would point to this?
