Re: Handbrake: expensive old CPU versus new budget CPU

Some of those Xeons are crazy cheap. I'd try for one that's Sandy Bridge-based though, as they have AVX in addition to a general boost. Also, aren't architectures prior to Sandy somewhat more vulnerable to Meltdown/Spectre? I seem to remember something about that, but was only half paying attention...

Re: i7 4790k to i5 9600k?

The only true weakness of the 4790K is gaming while doing CPU-encoded game streaming, and the 9600K isn't exactly stellar in that department either.

Frankly nobody should bother with any new Intel CPU slower than the 8700K these days.

Re: GTX 1070 Ti at $350: Return or Keep?

The real winners are those who bought GP104 at discounted prices. I don't think much of NV-only raytracing either, it's basically the shiny but ultimately forgettable VR tech demos all over again except with far worse market penetration. For it to be anything beyond that requires AMD's blessing on t...

At this rate GPU perf/$ is stagnating its gonna take forever to replace my 1070. Thankfully I bought one with a 5 year warranty.

Even my crappy Snapdragon 435 phone decodes HEVC 8-bit without issue. The added encode compute complexity of the HEVC tier codecs will be mostly handed by server side of the streaming sites anyway. If for 99% of end users who are using a land-based Internet connection I doubt the codec choice matter...

If you aren't already worried about the NSA/CIA/FBI/etc doing it for who knows how long already you shouldn't be worried about China.

I've either gotten way too particular with my tastes or just become dull and depressed. I feel for you man. From my own experience my SSDs loses around 40% in IOPs and sequential throughput with SATA3->USB3 enclosure versus native SATA3. Even so for normal consumer use it's not enough gonna be noticeable at tall. Was that with our without UASP? Device manager show the controller as "UAS Mass storage...

Re: PSU Wattage Question

At the minimum get at least a PSU with a 10 year warranty like the Seasonic Focus Gold Plus 750W and don't bother with the cheaper units. PSU fan noise isn't really a problem since most gold and better offerings won't spin before 20% load and considering just how much whiny the much smaller GPU ones...

Second selling them on Ebay, the NA userbase have always been suckers willing to spend outrageous sums on used semi-outdated PC stuff without warranty. Your 4770K should net you at least $200, and the 16GB DDR3 $80. Depending on your luck, even with the inflated DDR4 prices and after Ebay's cut you ...

Assuming it's AC, nope. It's normal for AC power to be unclean and variable at +/-10% nominal voltage.

Re: Everyone gets an Intel 8-core! (purportedly)

IMO from current and future computing trends the ~$4/GB will be the rock bottom pricing, it's not going to be any lower than that. I sure hope not, given that the cost of producing DRAM isn't stagnant in terms of cost/bit. There are gains every year. Moore's law in the context of fab economics is a...

4GB DDR3 was USD ~20 in 2012 IIRC?
16GB DDR4-3000 hit USD 63 in mid 2016, I think a lot of that can be attributed to by how much Kaby Lake sucked so much donkey butt.

Yeah RAM prices are somewhat insane. I read a lot of people saying that over the last months but when I looked at DDR4 yesterday, (just for fun) I almost fell off my chair. I am very happy that there is no need to upgrade from my Ivy i5 just yet, even though 8 cores sound tempting. Things are impro...

New i7s are rumored to be 8C/8T, which I guess will be just as fast as current 6C/12T 8700K in MT except a larger die and soldered heat spreader for better cooling.

Which is still boring at current DDR4 prices and/or if you don't need a lot of cores.
