Re: Thunderbolt in ASUS ROG Strix B550-F???

I'll try to ignore my itchy tinkeritis. I have no real need.

I enjoy enabling everything and then figuring out whether it was worth the effort.

You are correct; If I ever get a round tu-it, asking ASUS will be one of my first moves.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Re: Thunderbolt in ASUS ROG Strix B550-F???

I visited your links. I agree they are good, as far as they go. But, the card itself seems very mature. It's QVL only lists two motherboards; the X99-Deluxe II and a Z170 board. This reminds me of a fling that I had with SCSI from Windows 95 to Windows 2000. Not enough general documentation and ofte...

Thunderbolt in ASUS ROG Strix B550-F???

I assembled a fine PC after years of lurking and contemplation. And, now I've discovered that I have something better than I planned for. My system is a Ryzen 7 3800X on an ASUS ROG Strix B550-F Gaming WiFi motherboard. I have 16Gb of memory that I won't bother describing until I adjust the memory c...

Re: I need a Windows 10 x64 Sound Card

Thank you all very much. Your inputs made me ready to shutdown a $120 bluetooth headset purchase with an immediate satisfactory response. I said no way to the BT headset. I can get a USB sound card from my local Beast By for much less. $22 later and "we" are noisy again thanks to a Roccat ...

I need a Windows 10 x64 Sound Card

My well aged i3-3225 consolation system has been muted by MS Win 10 x64. (Consolation system, a PC built from inadequate parts to console the builder after learning that even hardware reviewers cannot be trusted. Re: Build For $1500?

I've spent way too much time pondering the best CPU, mobo, RAM, and SSD combination. My original plan was an overkill Threadripper box. But I've researched the implications too much and a lot of the old ways of doing things aren't desirable anymore. The AMD Ryzen 7 3700X will be the best all round s...

Re: Threadripper HEDT System Build Idea

Think of this system as a stripped down proof of concept. It has no great purpose to serve beyond being powerful and fast. 16 GB of system memory is enough for a speed run. Or, to cache a DVD, Four sticks to fully enable 4-channel memory. I'm good with 16GB of working high speed system memory until ...

Threadripper HEDT System Build Idea

ThreadRipper!!!! AMD has finally gone big instead of going under! The initial results are in and ... they are not perfect. The chips appear to have circuitry that limits current draw to the designed TDP, Good spin, your expensive HEDT CPU cannot damage itself if you have adequate cooling. Bad spin, ...

Re: Ryzen X370 Build - U.2 interface

Thanks guys. I'll be running the same story in system builders anonymous soon. Or, just let it die until the hardware hits the streets and I actually build it. Ryzen is impressive even with its' sensible limitations. I wish it allowed a more extreme working build; but I doubt quadrupling my planned ...

Okay, more is on the way. It is definitely not consumer grade. Definitely PC fantasy league bench racing material.

Search Opteron Naples and watch for links to Vega. Maybe ASUS will do an RoG edition in 2018 for serious high rollers.

Re: Ryzen X370 Build - U.2 interface

Thanks for opening the myriad possibilities of using good adapters. An adapter may be necessary if I pursue a dual PCIe x4 drive RAID array. The X370 motherboard that I have been exploring offers 2 M.2 x4 ports (one 2.0, one 3.0) and a U.2 x4 3.0 port. The U.2 port and the M.2 3.0 port share the sam...

Thank you mighty lions of IT. I kinda understood that U.2 has merit. I just did not understand in what context. You made the decision chain clear and understandable. M.2 x4 good. even as I suspectaltated. Engineering for marketing BS. Maybe when CPUs move to a wider memory bus. Intel's integrated GPUs still are like a candle burning dimly in a distant house on a foggy night.

Re: Ryzen System Build Planning - System Memory 4-ch vs 2-ch

I personally refuse to commit; but, the PCWorld article I cited in my original post showed no real world performance loss for an i7-5820K with 16 GBs of system memory installed as 2-ch (2 x 8GB) in a 2 DIMM slot mini-ITX X99 motherboard compared to the same CPU installed in a full-size Asus X99 Pro ...

Ryzen System Build Planning - System Memory 4-ch vs 2-ch

My i5-3470 system has served me well; but I want bragging rights. So, I hope to spec a high-end Ryzen system that totally rocks and completely works. Rocks = it just does it, almost zero waiting. Completely works = nothing that just adds eyewash; like a Windows 98 system with one GB of system memory...

Re: Lazy Twit Building Home Gigabit LAN - Two Wireless Route

Thanks, I guess I should RTFM. The extra CAT-6 link looks like the most elegant solution after following your logic. Re: Lazy Twit Building Home Gigabit LAN - Two Wireless Route

Thank you very much. I'm thinking a second router, probably wireless because most inexpensive gigabit routers seem to be wireless. The WNR3500, or the new router, will be out in public so guests can handshake with it and join my network. I need one under the stairs to share my bandwidth.

Lazy Twit Building Home Gigabit LAN - Two Wireless Routers?

I'm building a home network. I'm running 8 CAT-6 drops from a central panel. Re: PCI-based WiFi adapters - are they any good?

PCI WiFi adapters work better than USB dongles in my experience. I used a Belkin USB dongle with a lovely cord and base that let me hunt for the best signal. It died in less than three months. I suspect the designer expected me to eject it or turn off my desktop while it was not in use. 24/7 operati...
