Re: Need some help troubleshooting mobo

When you say "unplugged everything" does that include the internal storage devices? You might be able to at least get into the BIOS with them removed -- if so, the problem could be one of the drives dying. No, it didn't. However, I just tried that and still no good. At that point the only...

Need some help troubleshooting mobo

Hello all, I built the PC in my sig back in March 2020 and added the video card in August 2020. It has been working flawlessly up until yesterday. In the middle of my wife using it, it suddenly crashed. We go to turn it back on, everything powers up and the CPU warning LED illuminates on the mobo. T...

Re: Dissapearing SSD?

Ok quick update - I got a new Samsung EVO SSD for my system and got everything up and running again. Everything seems to be ok, except for an intermittent 'Master Boot Record Error' when booting! All I have to do when that happens is turn the computer off and on again and it's ok. Any ideas? I thoug...

Re: Windows 10 won't activate after small hardware change

Hmm I'm finding articles from early October that say the Insider build has that feature...but nothing about whether it's been released for regular users. I did download a fresh Windows 10 copy use the Software Creation Tool, so I would assume I have the most up-to-date public release.

Windows 10 won't activate after small hardware change

I upgraded to Windows 10 from 7 back when it first became available. Recently my SSD recently died and I had to replace it. Went from a 90 GB Corsair Force 3 to a 250 GB Samsung Evo. Performed a clean install of Windows 10 with a USB stick, and skipped the steps asking for a product key (which is ho...

Re: Dissapearing SSD?

I don't have a system restore backup (I know I know), BUT all of my important documents/pictures/music/videos are kept on the HDDs or Dropbox and also backed up to an external drive (including the Dropbox stuff). The SSD is solely a system drive with Windows and a few programs on it. I'll definitely...

Dissapearing SSD?

Hey guys - I am stumped by this weird issue and hoping any of you have heard of this. I'm running a Corsair Force 3 SSD (90 GB) on an Asus M5A88-V EVO mobo. Been running it fine for almost three years now. I go to turn my computer on yesterday and get a 'Master Boot Record error'. Try to do a Window...

Windows 7 Upgrade Media clean install 2nd time...

As I'm sure a lot of us did, I used a Windows 7 upgrade DVD to do a clean install on my new build about three years ago, using the registry hack from: http://winsupersite.com/article/windows-7/clean-install-windows-7-with-upgrade-media-128512 In preparation for the Windows 10 release, and just for g...

Re: Windows 7 upgrade disc on multiple computers?

Let me re-phrase that. I know a Vista key is different from a Win 7 key. So even though I have two valid previous Windows (XP and Vista) I need a separate Windows 7 upgrade key for each, which basically means a new disc?

Windows 7 upgrade disc on multiple computers?

So I can't seem to find a clear answer online to this question, but I think this is possible and legal. I purchased a Windows 7 Home upgrade license for a new build I did last year. Since I have a legal copy of XP I did a clean install and did the registry workaround to activate it. Now, I would lik...

Next upgrade?

So you can see my system specs in my sig. My friend just got me the sweet video card (I was running on-board video before that), so I've got $100 for an upgrade coming up in January. What would be the most effective upgrade? Right now I'm heavily leaning toward a 1TB HDD (I'm running an 80 GB 'Media...

Cheap Mouse

So my mouse is starting to fritz out on me, but I know nothing about mice. Any good recommendations for a cheap mouse? I do some strategy gaming, but nothing that requires a 'gaming' mouse. I just need a solid one for about as cheap as can be found. Thanks guys!

Re: Crowdsourcing a build for a friend

Oh yeah, the HP is horribly mis-configured, and it would probably overheat too.

It would be a standard ATX. He's got plenty of room and doesn't care about the form factor.

Crowdsourcing a build for a friend

Ok so my friend wants him to build an equivalent to this: http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Desktops/HP-ENVY-All-in-One/H4A25AA?HP-ENVY-h8-1455-Desktop-PC but obviously for a cheaper price. He's got a big TV he has his current gaming/HTPC hooked up to, so it has to be able to h...

I've got the Snipe: Ghost Warrior and some DLC for it that I won during Steam's holiday sale. I'd be willing to trade if you'd like because I'll never play it. Send me a PM if you want my Steam username.

Building HTPC for a friend

Hey guys, helping my friend spec out an HTPC to replace his store-bought Gateway which he is NOT happy with. He didn't give me a set budget but told me to keep it cheap. Here's what I came up with: nMEDIAPC 5000B case Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB (which will be combined with his 650 GB current...

Anybody want a copy of Sniper Ghost Warrior Gold Base + Map Pack and Second Strike? I won it during the Steam holiday stuff and I'd be willing to trade it. PM me if you do and we can set it up.

Thanks for all the helpful tips. It turns out I will have access to a tile floor and a wood table to work with the computer on, so that should be helpful. Quick question to my fellow gerbils about ESD. I'm getting ready to build my system (first one in 10 years, I last built when I was 17), and I was wondering how you have handled ESD for past system builds. Specifically, I have a wooden table that I will be using to do the assembling/testing, but I d...

Steam Game Trading

Hey so since it appears we'll all be getting a bunch of games on Steam in the next few days, I figured I'd start this thread for people who want to trade the games they received as gifts. For instance, I've received Sniper Ghost Warrior Gold Base, Map Pack, and Second Strike. I really don't want it,...

Orioles fan here. After the disaster that was last season, I'd almost prefer to blow the whole thing up and start over. Only keep the young guys and prospects. Re: DVI Cable Question

Thanks for all the answers! They'll almost certainly work with the single-link DVI. Dual-link is for really high-resolution screens, which a 19" probably is not. Yeah, they only do up to 1440x900. Which means the video card I'm getting should be able to easily handle that for a while to come.
