Re: Why are game consoles so efficient??

Consoles (aside from PS3) have always been about prioritizing GPU power, ram bandwidth and disc storage, while making the rest of the system as cheap to build and develop for as possible. That is why you get compromises like the Dreamcast's Hitachi SH-4 CPU, 360s in-order triple core PPC the Wii-U'...

Re: Why are game consoles so efficient??

The PS4 most often ran things at 1080p at launch, and even now with demanding titles targeting the Pro more, 1080p is still more common than 900p, even if more of the latter are coming in. The XBO was and is the 900P box, sometimes down to 720p. Its arguably best looking title and the topic of the ...

MAFs are exceedingly delicate. Pretty sure you'll be buying a new one.

Cleaning a MAF is exceedingly simple. Step 1 - buy unreasonably expensive spray can of MAF sensor cleaner. Step 2 - spray MAF sensor until it's shiny clean (one little blast should do it). Job done.

Re: Do a stop-gap build? Or go whole hog? ("Pentium Gold" v. "Ryzen," and other curiosities)

The Intel fanboys are desperately clinging to the IPC thing and if you use the traditional average framerate measurement method on some low-threaded FPS games and cherry-pick your graphics settings to specifically exaggerate the difference between AMD and Intel, Intel will have a commanding lead. O...

Re: Do a stop-gap build? Or go whole hog? ("Pentium Gold" v. "Ryzen," and other curiosities)

Essentially, AMD CPUs are the best overall option right now for everything except twitch gaming, and there won't be any major changes there for a year or so. You get more cores and threads than Intel and at lower prices on an architecture that game developers are coding for first and foremost (cons...

Re: Need advice on good coding conventions

Recently I've been working on a rather complex project, the Quantum Resistant Ledger, and I find myself asking questions like these really often: 1. Should I serialize the data used in a class before passing it down to the database to save, or should I let the database serialize the object, so that...

If you wanna game at all, you wanna game with da fruits. The quality levels dialled up all nice and high. Otherwise why bother? Because the eye candy isn't actually why I'm here. If it isn't still fun without the eye candy, it isn't actually a good game. Of course. But it's not either or. Me, I buy...

Re: How do you actually run games on high-spec monitors?

I realise I don't have the absolute fastest GPU out there but even so it's still comfortably in the top-end of modern hardware, and yet it seems like running much more than a bog standard 1080p monitor is unlikely to perform well. Ahh, no. And that's your problem. Your GTX1060 is most decidedly ped...

I'm still trying to figure out just how far back they had gone when the waters came up originally, especially given the stories over how small some of the underwater passages were at rescue time. 4 kilometres which would have taken hours. Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

My comment is about the fact that AMD cards have aged better. 6 years ago, £250-300 or so would have got me that HD 7950 or a GTX 660 Ti. 6.5 years ago, for £350 or so I could have got the HD 7950 at launch or a GTX 580. Which vendor would you rather have paid the money for and been stuck on for th...

Re: Vega 64 or GTX 1080 (not TI)?

Yes, OP has an ancient HD 7950 and should upgrade it, but a thing to remember is that NVIDIA cards age way less gracefully than that that 6.5 y.o. Radeon has. That myth needs to die. When the 7950 was released it was second only to the 7970 and pretty much kicked sand in the face of NVidias offerin...

(The last MIPS system I worked on had the MIPS processor monitoring a bunch of physical knobs and switches on a control panel, and reporting the knob/switch states to another device over Ethernet.) I'm guessing 99.99999% of the CPU was used to service the Ethernet stack and operating system? In day...

Re: Car runs rough on idle

You haven't truly learned to hate vacuum hoses until you have to diagnose non-functional four wheel drive actuation on an early 2000s Chevy. The manifold vacuum goes to an electronic switch on the transfer case, which opens a valve, which brings vacuum back up to the engine bay (while crossi...

Re: Car runs rough on idle

Throttle response. I hear you, but the throttle response on a servo-driven throttle isn't perceptibly worse than cable driven - with the bonus that proper fueling is FAR better since the ECU can set the proper pulse widths and ignition timing as the throttle opens and not in response to the throttl...

Re: Car runs rough on idle

How do you "idle in all gears"? At idle a petrol-powered car is basically operating with a mostly closed throttle plate to minimise fuel used. I assume he means releasing the accelerator while in motion, which then closes the throttle plate, and can expose the effects of a dirty IAC valve...

I have a 2003 pontiac grand am 2.2 L. It runs really rough on idle in all gears whether it is warm or cold. It isn't *that* terrible a CPU - it's still at least as powerful as a baseline PS4 or Xbox One CPU, for one reference point. That's being somewhat conservative. A quad-core Piledriver at 3.7GHz is absolutely going to pound the snot out of 8 lame Jaguar cores in the XBone/PS4. Vastly superior lightl...

Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

-Apple will push their products to a high speed ARM implementation over the next few years, mostly because of the absolute-power thing. It will have a bunch of fast-ish cores, but still lose out to Intel on real world IPC. -Apple will deal with the performance gap by optimizing their OS and in-hous...

Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

The way I understand it ARM processors are decent for performing one task at a time, and to do a different task they need to be switched to do a different task in software. Not a good way to multitask. For raw horsepower, I don't think ARM will be able to beat the x86 design, based on, well, the wa...

I'd buy a Windows 10 on ARM tablet if they made it in a form factor that made sense. Small. Like the old Surface 3 (non-Pro). Not these ridiculously oversized 12"+ monstrosities. 10" roughly iPad sized with 15 hours battery life and you've got a sale right here right now. And not stupid fa...
