Re: Video card with 6x or 8x mini-HDMI ports?

Matrox do a C900 model that provides 9 HDMI outputs, although they only support up to 1920x1200 each. http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/graphics_cards/c-series/c900/ Yikes. A $2000 video card seems a bit extreme... Can't DP be adapted to HDMI relatively cheaply and easily? Perhaps that's w...

Re: Obsolete IT in the wild

I was in a manufacturing plant and there was a huge IBM tower in the middle of a room with 200+ cables running to it. I asked if it was a minicomputer cause it looked OLD. Was told it was not a computer but a PLC! (programmable logic controller) It had 48kb of "ram" in the form of program...

Re: Obsolete IT in the wild

All that old stuff running on DOS with no network stack is probably more secure now than many newer systems. Will likely outlast any current OS too. Yeah. Floppies mentioned in the original post may be horribly obsolete, but nobody on the internet is going to be able to steal the data off those wit...

Re: Security suggestions

I have Netgear Arlo (disclaimer I was a beta tester and received my set for free).
I like the system, I have it integrated with Samsung Smartthings and works well as an unmonitored security system.
Only issue is the IR camera goes through batteries every 3 months.
The non IR lasts about 9 months.

Re: A gerbil's tv box choice?

Not necessarily what you are asking for but I have gone with a Sony Android TV (XBR850) and love the interface.
I also have a shield on that TV and it mostly shares the interface.
Everything runs through the TV remote and wired to sound bar using ARC.

Re: Tablet recommendation

I have a Oneplus 5. So recommendations of a phone are far under the 8-10 inch screen. I can currently do it all on my phone but want a larger screen. I don't want a Windows machine for this, I have a HP Elite X2 at my disposal for that. The use for this is Android apps (so iPhone/iPad is useless) I'...

Tablet recommendation

Does anyone have a recommendation on a reasonably high end Android tablet that will receive ongoing updates/upgrades. I'm looking for an 8 to 10 inch device that has at least 4G RAM and 64GB storage. My previous was the Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro and I was disappointed when Samsung discontinued it and d...

Once a manufacturer proves themselves to you in a number of devices it is only natural for them to rise to the top of the list for next purchases.

We picked up a set of Arlo Pro cameras, and initial impressions are positive. Was super-easy to set up, and the option to add a subscription later is appealing. Thanks for the input, guys. +1 for Arlo if you want 100% wireless. I have had Arlo since it was in beta (my base station is totally labell...

Mine arrived in the mail yesterday, too. Pay attention because there's an expiration date on the check, too. All checks expire eventually. If an expiration timeframe is not explicitly stated on the check, 180 days is typical. According the accounting folks in my office it is 60 days. banks t...

So I agreed to Windows 10 "feature updates" on my workstation. And now I got the creator update. Whoops! Well, it seems to be fine. So what's next? I had one of the attempts by MS come up always on top and graying out the entire screen. I had to power off to get rid of it... they are real...

Re: Safely hosting web services from home

Even a 5mbit connection is fine for anything non-commercial and non-multimedia. Heck, you could run a Pandora quality "internet Radio" service for 20 users no problem on that, or stream 3 netflix-SD quality videos on that. I would not say that... I find remote access to my server painful ...

Re: Safely hosting web services from home

Well I am going to take a different argument then the rest of these guys. What is your upstream on your internet? Most home services are much slower upstream than downstream. i.e. 30/5. a typical business even doing minor hosting is 100/100 or greater. also hosting on that 30/5 link users accessing ...

Re: Am I crazy to buy a friends used parts?

My friend just upgraded his system to a new I7-7700K which meant a new motherboard and memory as well. He offered me most of his old parts for $300. Its basically identical to my primary system and the parts will be used for my wife, son, daughter as a secondary system. So for $300 I get: I7-4770K ...

I've always asked friends when choosing Antivirus... who do you want to have a back do to your systems.
Only naming major vendors
USA (Norton and McAfee)
Russian (Kaspersky)
Panda (Spain)
Qihoo (China)
I'm sure more can be added here.. :-)
