Re: Recommended NAS Devices

There's some great stuff in this thread from people that know what they're doing with storage and filesystems, but as someone that does that all day every day I still just recommend people get a simple "dumb NAS" in a 2-bay enclosure of their preferred vendor and just get two disks of the...

Re: Recommended NAS Devices

Exception is the deduplication. 2GB RAM per 1 TB of storage for the comparasons for deduping. Default is dedupe off. There are extremely few workloads that benefit from deduplication. I don't recommend ANYONE enable it without seriously considering the ramifications and whether they'll even benefit...

Re: Recommended NAS Devices

I love FreeNAS but almost everything you posted here isn't true. ECC, while recommended, is required no more than with any other filesystem. DRAM requirements aren't governed by space, but by workload - 8 GB will keep almost every NAS file storage user happy, more just helps for non-typical workloa...

Re: Simple HTIB options

Oh, yeah. I've never seen a TV that doesn't truncate down to two channels. The truncate down to 2 channel is due to HDCP. Any time HDMI is communicating without HDCP it truncates to 2.0. If you are concerned with not having more than two audio channels, is there any reason why you wouldn't consider...

Re: Simple HTIB options

as for HTIB I had good results with Onkyo. They have 5.1 and 7.1 and the speakers were decent... not audiophile quality but definitely good performers for home theatre. https://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3800-Channel-Theater-Package/dp/B01F3ENAOU/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1513781225...

[*]Some speakers - 2.0, 2.1, 3.0 or 3.1 setup. rear satellites will be wasted (becaus HDMI audio is only two-channel). Huh? HDMI can carry 5.1 DTS just fine. The TV may truncate its own output at two channels, however? Unless this person simply does not have the space, it seems like it would be bet...

After weeks of teasing the public with reports of false starts and stops, Disney and Fox have settled on a massive $52 billion deal in which all of 21st Century’s film rights are being sold to the House of Mouse. The real question is whether they would roll Xmen into MCU. I cannot see them doing it...

Re: Help me understand, why is there a sport section?

Homebrewing is surprisingly geeky if you take it beyond the "Mr. Beer" kit stage to the next level. Math (recipe formulation), chemistry (mineral profile of your brewing water and how to tweak it, and how enzymes in the grain mash work), microbiology (sanitation, how environmental factors...

Good point. Well I'm quitting soda now so there's that. 7 hours already and I'm starting to get headaches. I feel for you... I gave up sodas (or pop in our vernacular here) when I was 20. I ended up easily losing 30 pounds. The round of headaches were ferocious but went away after a week or so. 20+...

if you don't mind watches you have a few choices. it all depends on what features you want... are you doing heart rate? are you wanting other monitoring? I'd recommend against having them do stuff like music playback since multi devices crossing purposes are rarely good. Myself my requirement was th...

Matrox do a C900 model that provides 9 HDMI outputs, although they only support up to 1920x1200 each. http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/graphics_cards/c-series/c900/ Yikes. A $2000 video card seems a bit extreme... Can't DP be adapted to HDMI relatively cheaply and easily? Perhaps that's w...

I was in a manufacturing plant and there was a huge IBM tower in the middle of a room with 200+ cables running to it. I asked if it was a minicomputer cause it looked OLD. Was told it was not a computer but a PLC! (programmable logic controller) It had 48kb of "ram" in the form of program...

All that old stuff running on DOS with no network stack is probably more secure now than many newer systems. Will likely outlast any current OS too. Yeah. I have Netgear Arlo (disclaimer I was a beta tester and received my set for free).
I like the system, I have it integrated with Samsung Smartthings and works well as an unmonitored security system.
Only issue is the IR camera goes through batteries every 3 months.
The non IR lasts about 9 months.

Not necessarily what you are asking for but I have gone with a Sony Android TV (XBR850) and love the interface.
I also have a shield on that TV and it mostly shares the interface.
Everything runs through the TV remote and wired to sound bar using ARC.
