Re: Asus RX550-2G Loud as Hell

It really is a shame because cards with such low power consumption don't even need fan control to be quiet, just a fan running at low speed all the time. My experience with low end Asus cards has also been so and so. While their higher end products can be among the best, they seem to be cutting more...

Re: I7 8700 reaching 100C

At this point I we can say that it is not an automatic overclock issue. It is possible that there is a heat transfer issue. I looked at the base of the cooler used (Akasa nero 3) and noticed that the outer 2 heatpipes are unlikely to overlap the cpu underneath by much. Then there is the possibility ...

Re: World's First Passive Liquid Cooler

This is essentially a thermosyphon heatpipe (not to be confused with a thermosiphon) with separate lines for the liquid and vapor. The liquid returns to the evaporator thanks to gravity so there is no wick (the porous inner layer in conventional heatpipes) needed. This way it is easier to make the p...

Re: Anyone still using a CRT ie.g. for gaming?

I still have one of the later 19 inch Sony crt monitors which I occasionally use to play games. The lack of sharpness is actually desirable in games since it makes jaggies less visible (I don't have the graphics power to enable antialiasing). I love the way crts render moving images and my score in ...

Re: Itching to build another machine. But don't need too

If you enjoy the process of building a computer then moving your system into a new case could take care of the upgrade itch. It worked well for me in the past as it was also an opportunity to clean my hardware and improve cooling and cable managment. It is also relatively cheap and allows for more c...

Re: Whats the most recent dumb thing you did to your PC?

In reverse chronological order: I was trying to remove the cooler from a socket 478 motherboard but the thermal compound was particularly sticky. I ended up yanking the heatsink along with the cpu clean off it's socket and killing both in the process. I was removing a big tower cooler but was too la...

Re: TR Readers Other Frequented Tech Sites

These days it is just Tech Report and UK based Bit Tech that I read on a daily basis while occasionally I will take a look at Silent PC Review and TFT Central.
