Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Never heard of Flying Colors before, thanks!  (..really good musicians, but their songwriting needs a boost - particularly a really good lyricist.)  Certainly good enough to put "in rotation". :D Yes's composition was at its best because of Trevor Rabin - effectively a composition enginee...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Oh, interesting... so maybe the live album is recorded better than their first studio album was? I haven't gotten this live album - I just heard about it today - but it certainly does sound different .  It sounds almost too clear.  But maybe I'm just tricking myself. I bought Rush's Vapor Trails th...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

80's (and beyond) Yes is very much s tudio  - and as a result, really only gets good with very high quality stereo/surround/binaural.  At that point the vocals, though still loud, set back into the mix. It's that classic case of: when it's good, it's very good; when it's bad, it's ... I'm not repla...

Had not listened to these guys before yesterday. This is very good! I'd describe it as heavy prog metal, somewhat in the vein of Tool.

Never heard of them, listening now.

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

I heard them in concert either last year or the year before, can't remember.  Not good, especially when many of their albums are fantastic. Too much setup time in particular, and selecting less that fantastic sets to perform.  (..still, they were a lot better than TOTO who was before them (who I al...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

You could go check out the most recent 3 Opeth albums, if you haven't already. They ditched the Death Metal aspect of their sound entirely and have pretty much gone full-on retro prog. FWIW Steven Wilson mixed and sang backing vocals on Pale Communion (their second-to-last album, released in 2014)....

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

I like both Flying Color albums well enough, but sort of passively.  The second one is a bit more proggy. I guess I should give the second one a chance; I completely ignored it when it came out (off the top of my head I don't even know what it is called). I posted my thoughts on the first one short...

Re: What are you listening to RIGHT NOW?

Those three tracks kind of remind me of his old band Spock's Beard. Thanks for the heads up, I wasn't aware this existed; based on those three songs, the album sounds like a winner. I was rather disappointed in Sola Scriptura and the first Flying Colors album, and had basically written Morse off as...

WARNING: Pretentious progrock epic alert! The Neal Morse Band, The Similitude of a Dream.  Based on John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress , so yeah, there's a religious element, but it's not obnoxious and the double-album is really good... maybe the best concept album I've listened to since Dream The...

I did a quick Google of issues with the DVP 5830 upgrade to Win10, and while I see there are many issues, I didn't see one identical to SSK's, although I did note several people with screen issues post-upgrade. I'm sure SSK's already seen this info, though. This seems to me the kind of situation tha...

I put an AM3+ chip (FX-8350) into my AM3 board (Asus Crosshair 4). Works great. Some mobo manufacturers provided a BIOS update to allow AM3+ CPU's to work, others didn't. As far as the Intel vs AMD CPU's you are looking at, why not just look at all the CPU benchmarks available on the Internet? I mea...

It certainly appears that this whole thread is inevitably headed to the religion and politics forum. China is not "intrinsically inferior" for any reasons of race. In my opinion, it is the lack of ethics that makes China inferior to first-world nations. China demonstrates no respect for h...

Sounds like a power issue.

Is the X51 one of those systems with an external PSU? If so, is there some kind of board the PSU plugs into inside the case? If so, perhaps its faulty or insufficient.

Re: Getting started in DSLR

Entry-level and mid-level Canons feel cheaply constructed. Nikon, Pentax and all the rest feel better. I can agree on Pentax build quality- that's the one thing that they get universally right. But everyone else is more of a tit-for-tat at various ranges, and they all have better lens ranges (and g...

Before delving into the disgustingly addictive world of interchangeable lens cameras, if you can stretch your budget a bit, check out the Sony RX10 and Panasonic FZ1000... really good do-everything types of cameras. Canon just introduced the G7X, and Panasonic the LX100. Both cameras seem neato. If ...

Sorry, can't agree about the Swan M10s. I bought a set with high hopes but am most disappointed. (I own the M100s which are far superior, though more costly). M10s have no base and are basically boring. Go for the Klipsch set. M10's are near-field speakers for music. They have plenty of bass for na...
