You used to be able to buy a drive with the same controller board and swap them... haven't needed to try this in quite a few years.

The only way that's worked for me is when the drives are identical - down to revision, lot & date codes. Even same drives with different revs has failed.

Re: Power precision screwdriver

The one thing I can't figure out is, what size is a standard hex screwdriver bit? I can't find dimensions, but I want to make sure that my new precision bits would fit into the impact driver screwdriver. 1/4" hex is the standard. You don't really need to worry about it, any hex drive screwdriv...

Re: Power precision screwdriver

You can get #0 Phillips bits in standard 1/4" hex drive. They fit any power driver, or interchangeable bit hand drivers. I've got a powered precision screwdriver, but it's not what your looking for in this case. It runs on a couple of AAA batteries. It will turn screws, but it doesn't have much...

Have you actually used it? Backup works fairly well, but restore is amazingly cumbersome and prone to failure.

Re: TR and Macrium's Data Disasters contest entry thread

So many tales that could be told, but how about one success and one failure? I'd rather be lucky than good? A friend calls and says his computer stopped working, and there is a smell of smoke. I tell him to unplug it and bring it over. Yep, the magic smoke has been let out of the power supply. But a...

Re: Raspberry Pi 3 released

It's here!

My Raspberry Pi 3 showed up today (ordered 2 weeks & 2 days ago from MCM). Any suggestions on what silly and/or interesting project to try first?

Also poke around NirSoft and RoadKil, they both have a lot of free utilities, and might have something that would work.

Re: Consolidating old data - Duplicate folder finder?

Take a look at WinMerge (open source) http://winmerge.org/?lang=en or WMatch (gotta buy it from PC Magazine) http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2365755,00.asp If you go with WMatch, you're probably better buying access to their whole library for $20, than one program for $8. They have a number of ...

Re: Amazon, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways.

I thought I was an Amazon addict, but I see that I'm just a novice. I buy a lot of computer parts for work, and CDW is just too expensive to buy from. Years ago they were more competitive, but I rarely even look at them any more, their prices are so much higher on most things. I mostly use biz.Tiger...

Re: Dumbest Comments from Non-Tech Types

I had an argument some years ago with an idiot selling laptops at BestBuy. He kept telling everyone that Core Duo is a dual core processor so Core 2 Duo must be a quadcore. When I corrected him, it was as if I insulted his girlfriend. He got pretty defensive and kept saying I don't know what I'm ta...
