I feel like they should bring back the non-responsive site. This new thing isn't doing them any favors... It looks awful on every platform, messed up content over a year old. It's just so unfinished. :-?

Re: Silicone pad temp increase vs paste. How much.

I bought an Acer business-oriented Haswell machine years ago and the fan would scream whenever the CPU was working hard. HWinfo indeed showed the CPU was overheating and throttling. Pulled the heatsink to see what the paste looked like but found an old school graphite pad material application, the l...

Re: No... not him! Don't tell me they got him too!

I like to look up video reviews for some things. Tablets, notebooks, thermal pastes (liquid metal curiosity), and PC cases come to mind. Video gives you a more tangible "visual" of the item. Can be quite beneficial. I miss the podcasts here with David Kanter. Those were the only Podcasts I...

Re: The Outer Worlds goes Epic exclusive

I've come to the realization that there's a vocal minority ready and waiting to bitch and moan, lynch, picket, etc, about everything. That may be the case about some things, but don't sweep everyone into that same group just because they're standing up against consumer-unfriendly practices. That se...

Re: The Outer Worlds goes Epic exclusive

Most customers simply won't care; it's just another digital store account along with Steam, GOG, Origin, Uplay, etc. And then there's the whole thing about no such thing as bad publicity. Gamers like to complain about stuff like exclusivity and lack of privacy/portability/etc. but very few of them ...

I just looked at my hidden updates on my HP desktop and the HP Keyboard drive is gone now. I guess MS pulled it from WU then.

Re: Microsoft pulls Windows 10 October 2018 Update

The HP problem got me. It's related to a separate HP keyboard driver update that just happened to come in beside this week's MS cumulative update. I don't even have a keyboard attached to that HP Prodesk G2 machine and it still got it. This is causing boot loop BSODs for huge collections of HP busin...

Re: CPU architecture router performance

The CPU comes into play with services like VPN server/client, QOS and media sharing (Samba, FTP, DLNA, etc). In these cases the CPU can make a big difference in how much bandwidth you can achieve. Hardware acceleration is there to make these cheap boxes capable of handling gigabit internet links. Wi...

I've seen that the worst performance losses are storage related so I decided to test my Core i5 6500 machine here. It is a HP business class machine and has a very recent UEFI with all the updates. I used Inspectre to disable Windows mitigations. AS SSD bench actually showed no significant change fo...

How bad is Windows 10 Really? It's not. I have been using it since launch and I have installed every one of the updates within a week of it's release. Perhaps I've just been lucky, but I don't think so. I will tell you this, I am apparently much more open to change than the average person commentin...

Re: EOL: Windows 7 + CPU w/o SSE2

I think it mostly comes down people having little interest in replacing a machine that still does whatever they do. They really don't care whatsoever about being up to date with the latest trends or seeing things pop up faster. There's nothing appealing about spending money on it.

Re: EOL: Windows 7 + CPU w/o SSE2

Yup. Difference is, it's not a mission-critical system, and since it only gets booted up for a few hours maybe 20-30 times a year, I've got no notion to upgrade it. If it stops working tomorrow for any reason, I can live with that, as it's well past a reasonable EOL. My work is running some Core 2 ...

Re: EOL: Windows 7 + CPU w/o SSE2

I had my parents using a Pentium 4 2.6 GHz with 2GB RAM and Windows 7 for a few years. That was barely acceptable. I don't think it was much slower than XP SP3 though, strangely enough. It's hard to imagine we thought that hardware was speedy at some point, but of course 2002 software and web sites ...

Wow, Anovoca. I was looking at an IT job in Merrill, Wisconsin a while back. Then I saw it was even farther north than Green Bay. I don't think I can take those winters. Just FYI, this broke a local record that had stood since 1889. I have never seen a winter storm like it. It was the kind of weath...

I had a Zotac 1070 fail. They didn't have any 1070s at the time so they sent a 1080. No funky negotiation necessary. That's how you make a customer happy.

Re: Upgrading to CoffeeLake, or should I wait ?

I have a 4.3 GHz 2500K + 1080 machine and a 4.8 GHz 7600K + 1080 Ti TVPC. Sure the 7600K is a lot faster in various ways, but really I have a hard time saying that it's all that apparent in games. I played some pretty beefy recent games on the 2500K including Dishonored 2 / DotO and Prey. I think it...

What are we hoping to gain with this tweaking? It's a desktop use case right? For the desktop I've never had any complaints about any Realtek gigabit chips. Both Intel and Realtek will happily max out your gigabit throughput without any tweaks. I've seen some people doing validation testing of mothe...

Nowadays I recognize that the only thing I'm really good at is resource optimization and base building, so games that don't include some of that are a no-go.
