Re: No Power to PC

Just as a quick update. I returned the Corsair PSU to Corsair. They completely honored the warranty and sent me a brand new unit. There were no hassles or unwarranted delays. Seems to be a great company. Thanks to all for the help and guidance.

Re: No Power to PC

Hi folks. It was the PSU. Thanks techguy. I had Best Buy deliver a new PSU (the only good thing about living in Miami: Same day delivery from Best Buy!) Tried to jump the old PSU, nothing. Tried to jump the new PSU, started right up. I replaced it and everything is functioning normally, as far as I ...

Re: No Power to PC

Thanks for the replies. I know it's not the PSU switch, as I checked and it also isn't accessible from the exterior of the case. No way it could have been bumped into the wrong position over night.

I will try the two tests from techguy tonight and report back.

No Power to PC

Hi All. Here's the issue. Last night, I finish what I am doing on my computer (Windows 10) and shut it down through Windows. Normal, software initiated shutdown. This morning, pushing the power button does nothing. No blinking lights, no fans start spinning, nothing. When I initially built the syste...

Re: Data Processing Machine for Work

Thanks for all the help! JustAnEngineer, I've taken some of your advice on components. The updated list can be found at the same link as before, or here - http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=24118465&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na...

Data Processing Machine for Work

Hello SBA! I want to build a powerful PC for work (paid for by my employer!) for data processing. I work with large economic data sets (~20 GB) which is very RAM heavy work, because the data need to be loaded into memory to be used. I do some parallel processing etc. but ultimately I just want an al...

Re: New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

Time to report in about the final build. The final shipment of components arrived on Monday. Mobo, CPU and SSD. See pics below. Everything looked good. I got everything laid out and put up TRs "How to build a PC" video. The build went pretty smoothly for the most part. Notable bumps were i...

Re: New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

Okay folks, the first bits started trickling in today! Case, PSU, RAM and GPU all arrived. Unfortunately, newegg didn't process the rest of my order in time, so CPU, Mobo and SSD will get here on Monday, despite signing up for ShopRunner's 2 day shipping trial. Oh well... Here are some pictures to w...

Thanks for backing me up, Chrispy. I was indeed concerned with linear inches, and did realize that volumetrically, it is significantly larger.

Re: New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

I am curious what caused you to choose the Fractal Designs Node 304 case over the Silverstone Sugo SG08. Are you going to use the stock Intel CPU cooler? The Fractal Node close in size, and I could get the case plus a decent PSU for significantly less ($150 all in) than the $200 for the sg08. Plus ...

Re: New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

Thanks for your input everyone. I am going to start with Win8 and see how it goes. This whole experience will be new to me, so what the hell, why not keep it new all the way? Also, everyone can relax, I got 2 RAM sticks (2x8GB). I'll be back when everything arrives and I can start building, no doubt...

Re: New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

Gilligan and SuperJawes' bickering aside, I have heard that Win8.1 is better than the original release was, so maybe I will give it a try. Especially if future games are going to utilize the features of that OS, I may as well avoid the hassle of upgrading later unless necessary. If I REALLY hate it,...

Re: New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

Alright folks. Thanks again for your help. I have ordered everything from my build posted last night, but following the suggestions of GeForce and MadMan I have replaced the processor with the 4570 (not the 'S') and the PSU to the CX500M. I also added a stick of RAM to properly utilize both channels...

PSU wire sizing

I have a friend telling me the 2 power connectors on the graphics card are not required. Meaning I could use the CX430M with the one PCI-e 6-pin connector and be fine, and having two connectors on the card is for multi-rail PSUs. Anyone care to weigh in?

Re: New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

If no one else pointed it out yet, and for all that's good and holy in DIY computer building - get a dual channel RAM kit . RAM - Same as above - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148540 Why don't I just change this to 2 of these DIMMS (found I could get them for $60/DIMM, vs...

Re: New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

Okay folks. The long awaited second build! I decided to switch up the case and get a different PSU. Also, as suggested I beefed up the GPU and CPU, but managed to only add ~$100. Let me know what you think, if I've missed anything compatibility-wise, etc. Case - Fractal Design Node 304 - http://www....

New Small form-factor Gaming Rig

Hello All! This is my first post to techreport, and I just want to say thank you in advance for your help! I am looking to build a small form-factor gaming rig. I realize this will limit my performance, to some degree, but I don't want a gigantic piece of hardware. Generally, I want to play FPS game...

Re: Repetitive task needs to be automated, don't know where

Python is awesome! My coding experience with "real" languages was limited to java, which is much more of a pain than Python. It took about 2 days of actually working on the problem to get everything operational, but I spent a couple of days working through a Python tutorial just to get up ...

Cheesyking, you are officially, the man! Your help was invaluable. While others, both on this forum and another, were saying things like "Why don't you just use MySQL to do this?" you actually paid attention to the post and realized I needed a bit of hand-holding. Thanks! I figured I would...

Re: Repetitive task needs to be automated, don't know where

Thanks cheesyking. I know about that part of the psid website, but the advantage, as I see it, to searching for the variable is that it compiles which years the variable is available (ie defined in exactly the same way, because it does change) and the variable names associated with those years. On t...

Re: Repetitive task needs to be automated, don't know where

Thanks for the help cheesy king. No offense taken, I realize where I fall in the hierarchy of programming experience, and it isn't high up the ladder. As far as the HTML stuff returned, it can be found at http://simba.isr.umich.edu/VS/s.aspx . I need to search for something like er43564. What I need...

Repetitive task needs to be automated, don't know where to s

To explain the problem: I am writing code for Stata. The code reads in data from a text file, then assigns variable names like "Price" to whats read in as ER34556 so I actually know what the variables are. I have multiple text files of data, corresponding to different years in a panel surv...
