Re: 2009 Taurus Doors Unlock Themselves

As someone who likes to work on my own cars, I will say the first mistake the car companies made was to put a computer in a car. Remember Edelbrock? If a mechanic would tune it up right, it would run clean enough to put today's environmental standards to shame. Only those who have worked extensively...

Re: Gas turbine hybrid Jag

There were problems with turbine engines. First of all, turbine engines push a LOT of heat out of the exhaust, which would be very uncomfortable with a significant number of turbine engines in heavy traffic. Also, there were already tests with turbine engines in big rigs(tractor trailers for you cit...

Re: Voltage Question

First of all, APC has a transformer box called the Line-R, iirc. It ups the voltage in brownouts and lowers the voltage in overvoltages. It's about 60 bucks I think. Secondly, if your lights are dimming like that when your A/C kicks on, you may have a potentially dangerous wiring problem in the buil...

Re: Can my PC's 400w PSU handle a Radeon HD 7850?

I usually go overkill on the PSU. I'm runnin a 700W in a system that probably only pushes 400W max. For one, it gives me the warm fuzzies, and second, it leaves plenty of room for upgrading and adding stuff later.

Re: dead battery in mb

I've ruined a few mobos in my life flashing the bios just for the sake of having the latest bios. Avoid flashing your bios unless you can meet these two conditions. 1. You need to flash it because you are having problems that a stated bios upgrade would fix. 2. Be financially able to replace the mot...

Re: Linus Torvalds hammers Nvidia for lack of Linux support?

I agree with Torvalds, but I also agree with a company being able to make their own decisions to protect their intellectual property. As as long as NVIDIA still has enough of their own stock, they can make their own decisions. NVIDIA doesn't have to even make closed-source drivers for Linux if they ...

Re: Laptop for Runescape & Minecraft??

Minecraft will benefit from a good GPU. I have an old GeForce GTX 460, and it does just fine running minecraft in Linux Mint with 2 gigs of ram on a Core 2 Duo E4400 processor. My GPU and CPU are kind of mismatched, so I would assume the performance of my GPU is more alone the lines of a pre-fermi G...

I would like to order one of these. Probably more expensive than the raspberry pi, but also a pit more punch as well.

Re: What do you do when your bored?

I was thinking of taking up Warhammer or D&D, maybe Magic: The Gathering, but nobody in this area plays those games that I know of. They have tournaments in Boise, which is only an hour and 30 minute drive. Hmmmm, I will have to search some more on that in my area I suppose.

What do you do when your bored?

In light of the dumpy economy, and it being too cold to take the JetSki to the lake up in McCall, Idaho, I've found myself bored to the point that I've come across these ridiculous series of videos on YouTube formally label as YouTube Poop. I am watching the Zelda and Mario series right now. So, wha...

Re: Need power protection for a future system

I've heard that some UPS systems always have the power passing through the battery before it exits out to the computer, thus there is no switching when a power outage happens, and protects better from a lightning strike than one that has to switch. If this is true, I would like to know which Battery...

Re: Ubuntu 12.04LTS released

If your not set on a desktop that requires GPU acceleration, I would recommend MATE over Cinnamon. Stability-wise, MATE is more mature(being forked from Gnome 2, than Cinnamon is. If your into the latest and greatest, I would definitely choose Cinnamon, but for production, stability, and configurati...

Linux Mint 13 Maya

I am downloading the Mate version of Linux Mint 13 Maya, partially because the developers admit that Mate(a fork of gnome 2), is more stable than the Cinnamon(a customized version of Gnome 3). As much publicity as Ubuntu gets, I think Linux Mint deserves more publicity, as they don't seem to be run ...

Re: Does NVidia 301.42 drivers damage your hardware?

Ever since installing the new drivers, I have a permanent while line about 3/4 of an inch from the bottom of my screen. It takes a few minutes to show up after each reboot. I tried installing Ubuntu to get it to go away, but it is now showing up there too. I'm thinking the drivers permanently damage...

Need power protection for a future system

So, I'm going to be building myself a new system, but I need suggestions or advice on power protection. Re: Sound upgrade

Your sound can crackle if you have your sampling rate set too high. This is usually only the case with older processors, like a Core 2 Duo. 96 Khz is a good setting, but anything higher than that, like 192 Khz, might be too high for your processor and it can't keep up.

Not sure about power consumption, but my computer puts out enough heat to keep a small room warm in the middle of an Idaho winter. And when people ask what my carbon footprint is, I just tell them, "It's high enough to get me the death penalty in Montana". I always get mixed reactions. :D

Also, DO NOT go through a debt reduction of debt consolidation service. When you sign up to work with them, you basically give them the rights to your assets if you cannot follow through to the end. They can take everything you own, and then some. Bascially, let the collection calls come in, you don...

Re: Bulding a silent PC and a few other questions

I seem to recall an old friend of mine resorted to liquid cooling to make a silent PC. The PSU fan was the only fan in his machine, but it doesn't make any noticable noise anyway. He piped water over his CPU, GPU, and maybe his chipset, but I can't remember for sure about the chipset. The pump was ...

Re: ** Official ASUS Poll & Discussion - LAN Controllers **

If motherboard manufacturers would provide extra expansion slots, I would always choose an add-on NIC card. I remember the old 3Com NICs had an on-board RISC controller to take the load off of the CPU. I would like to see this again. I suppose onboard would be great if they also put a seperate on-bo...

Re: Which integrated audio is better Realtec or VIA?

I'm sorry, I just can't help myself, I need to rant about something. Audio does not belong on a video card. But then again, they've been doing this since the 80's. Joystick port on a sound card. Printer port on a video card(Hercules was guilty of this). My rant to the tech industry, keep components ...
