Re: Highly configurable download manager

Hey if that's all it was then my bad. I didn't catch the humor but sometimes I just don't. But yeah i've got a great connection, 120/50, but that's why I wanted a DL manager... To tame my downloads when I'm trying to game (I disable the QoS engine on my router). Otherwise a lot of my games just beco...

Re: Highly configurable download manager

That is some serious baggage if you come into a general software topic just to rage on. Anyway I love wget, I use it anytime I do any sort of heavy lifting on a *nix system. But I think most people got that I was looking for something on Windows and I certainly found a solution I am digging. Though ...

Re: Highly configurable download manager

Steel, very good recommendation. I do like it. It's almost exactly what I wanted. It actually has more features than I even thought I wanted and in many cases out-did what I did want. The only bummer is that it doesn't support Chrome. However I am not a fan boy that can't possibly let a second brows...

Highly configurable download manager

Well, the subject title is what I'm looking for, a highly configurable download manager. I have 150 Mb downlink and have a slightly odd obsession that required me to download a lot... it's always free... it can get pretty messy... i get a lot of judgmental stares from people who happen to glance at ...

Re: MSI R7850 Twin Frozr experience

I've always been an XFX man for the red camp and EVGA for the green camp. But again I strayed a little for the low sound of this card. Hell this is the first mid-range card I've ever bought. I always go for the crazy expensive cards

Interesting! I really hope I don't run into hardware problems. My desire for the card was purely based on how quiet it was (of course aside from the good midrange chipset).

MSI R7850 Twin Frozr experience

I was wanting to share and read other people's experience with the MSI R7850 Twin Frozr. So I'm obviously an enthusiast (just check my sig, that's only half the computers I own, lol) Anyway, I built a gaming rig for an acquaintance and chose this video card for their box. I was absolutely blown away...

You can often request these to be unblocked. I asked my friend's ISP to do it and they gladly did it, no hassle. And mine are unblocked from the get go.

Re: Best free/cheap Blu-Ray player software

Like everyone says it's simply not possible to be free. Best option, find a bluray drive combo deal that includes a free copy of PowerDVD from Cyberlink. I use this in conjunction with REMOVED - Rule #1. I have not had a single issue with any bluray I've ever put in and beleive me.... that's been A ...

Man I have a DIR-655 too and it's been my favorite router I've ever seen. So reliable and configurable. So many great options! And I run over 20 servers through this thing for 2+ years now. I say get another 655! I went D-Link after a Linksys wouldn't work for an online game i was playing quiet some...

Re: Running a Linux Server from Home

Everyone here has given all examples of things to consider I myself would have recommended. But I would like to emphasize that: 1) Your ISP may have an issue with running a profit generating server at home. Not all ISPs are like this so you might be in luck. Otherwise ask them about a small business...

Re: I want to build a PS4

I'm digging the enthusiasm. But this is really a lost cause bro. No standard PC architecture is going to resemble the PS4 enough to be worth your time at all. You won't be targeting the correct APIs, the entire pipeline is dramatically different, your hardware access is going to vary greatly, etc et...

Re: I needed a new distro

Writing a file system from scratch is nice, even with docs. I've always been really interested in this. I've done alot of development in my day, but never driver level stuff to include file system. And I'm a fan of file systems (ZFS ), so this would be a really fun adventure- to include just ...

Re: Have we reached the pinnacle of microarchitecture design

My opinion.... no we're not quite at the pinnacle. The things Intel ARE (you guys are right, these caps are fun!) focusing are make sense. Intel's CPU speeds have really taken off to the point that we're now bottle necking at the video cards, so what's the point of making faster CPU's right now. Str...

Re: I needed a new distro

Actual, valid answers would involve some disclaimer of perfectly fine-tuning by hand to exacting specifications, but the days of bespoke distros are passing, and if you're really set on going it alone, there are still variants of Gentoo and Arch that cater to that mindset, and there will always be ...

Re: I needed a new distro

I'm not a fan of systemd neither. It's most apparent point is for boot speed by enabling much more parallelism in the booting process and by using compiled code vice shell scripts. That approach has done nothing but make it more complicated to troubleshoot boot/service failures and remove finer cont...

Oracle ceded the market to Linux when OpenSolaris was closed down. Indeed man, which is a damn shame. Solaris was incredible. I started on Ubuntu too. But quickly I've come to dislike it and many distros like it. I am very tired of having distributions deciding what software I want installed on my machine. ZFS performance seems and feels better under Linux, beleive it r not. Placebo effect I'm afraid. http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_item&px=MTM1NTA I certainly have my disagreements with this article based on my own observations. I'll perhaps run a few of my own benchmarks this weekend....

Re: Debating what OS to go with for my "new" server

ZFS would be nice, but certainly isn't a must-have. There's plenty of things that I like about it, but I realize that this means switching OSes (because Linux and ZFS ain't exactly low maintenance, and I'd rather not go for btrfs right now). Well, let's go ahead and throw that misconception out the...

I'm hoping I am reading between the lines well enough to assume you don't mean to have a GUI with little option boxes to do all the work for you.... Otherwise, what you've just described is Arch linux. The best definition of Arch Linux: "Linux with a nice package manager" - You make it act...

Yeah, these x79 pins come out at a steep angle, diagonally. They were pleasantly easy to reposition though.
