Re: Server Racks & installing a rack mount chassis

I understand the motivation, but there are also some downsides to this approach. You'll have more noise, higher power consumption, more heat, and increased risk of drive failure (since you've got more of them). Your cost per GB is also going to be higher since 500 GB drives are well below the $/GB ...

Re: Server Racks & installing a rack mount chassis

If this is just a home file server, it'll be hard to justify (from a cost perspective) what you're building out unless you need some insane (20+TB) amount of usable space or high IOPS for block level storage. A single 2U QNAP TS-859 Pro can hold 24TiB of raw disks, will cost less than what you've s...

Re: Server Racks & installing a rack mount chassis

For a file server I would strongly recommend going with a platform that supports ECC RAM ... My inclination would be to go for an AMD Thanks for the tip, I hadn't looked at a platform that supports ECC RAM, I wrote it off as a bit to expensive for just a home NAS since I was looking at going with a...

Re: Server Racks & installing a rack mount chassis

Awesome thanks for the info and tips Chrispy_ :) your right I'm going to go with a four-post rack, the NAS is going to be pretty heavy. The chassis I'm looking at using isn't exactly short at 25.5". Fighting cable spaghetti is never any fun, ever. I still don't know how cables get tangled when ...

Server Racks & installing a rack mount chassis

I'm looking at building my own NAS. QNAP and Synology pretty cool but they aren't exactly budget friendly specially if you want lots of storage, i.e. 8 or more bays. I reckon I can build one cheaper so that's what I'm doing. It's still in the planning phase, but this is what I have planned so far: I...

Re: My new HTPC

There is the i3-3225 with HD4000, 55W TDP. Let me rephrase, none of my favorite computer shops stocked an i3 with a 4000 IGP. I know CPU processing power doesn't matter much in a HTPC, but the aim of the build wasn't to build a HTPC that was 'good enough' for as little as possible. I don't know why...

Re: My new HTPC

Out of interest, where's it going to go? It doesn't look like you downsized for space-saving reasons and that old table it's sitting on in that last photo is, uh... an acquired taste . How do I politely say that that sexy, sharp-edged expensive-looking peice of metal contrasts rather starkly with t...

My new HTPC

I thought Id share my new HTPC build, it's my ultimate (until something else better comes along) HTPC. My old HTPC wasn't as quiet as I'd like it to be, I did consider trying to make it quieter but I couldn't resist the urge to build a new HTPC. So I built a new HTPC. I had been looking at building ...

Re: Anyone seen these? Origen AE M10

Front panel lcd/vfd are completely useless gimmicks in real htpc situations, maybe even a distracting downside. Just because something doesn't appeal to you or you can't see a use for something doesn't make it useless. Touch screen LCD/VFD's aren't completely useless, I have no use for one and they...

Re: Intel Centrino Wireless-N 6235 aerials

Cheers Chrispy_! I like your system, I'll adopt it. I wasn't sure if the order mattered or not, the only difference is one aerial is longer than the other. I know in some laptops both aerials are the same colour and they are tagged 1 & 2 or Main & Aux, others it's black and white. I'm assumi...

Re: Anyone seen these? Origen AE M10

Have you tried going through the "where to buy" list? http://www.origenae.co.kr/en/wtb_index.htm I found these two places in the US from the "where to buy" list, checkout: http://www.shop.perfecthometheater.com/OrigenAE-chassis-and-amplifiers_c30.htm http://www.vidabox.com/store/...

Intel Centrino Wireless-N 6235 aerials

I picked up a Intel Centrino Wireless-N 6235 and a pair of Tyco aerials/antennas (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-TYCO-Laptop-WIFI-Wireless-Mini-PCI-E-Internal-Antenna-Intel-6250-6230-6235-/251062010788) for my new HTPC build. So I hit-up Intels web site for the technical documentation to figure out ...
