Re: 40"/42" 4K@60Hz for under a $1,000.

I'll agree that 32" is really as small as you want to go, even then curved screens actually have some value (just not smaller and with pretty much any price markup.)

Re: My SSD's total capacity has reduced?

I checked the disk in my other PC, and in the disk manager it had a small block showing as unallocated space. I tried increasing the partition size to take it up again but no dice. Figuring that the disk is still readable, I copied the data to another disk and wiped it's firmware and re-created a s...

Re: My SSD's total capacity has reduced?

Hard drives have always counted byes/MBs/GBs/TBs in their own special way. Even that way has changed over time. Also with SSDs they came up with yet another fun measurement. They will call out the spare space too (or they were doing that, they have now stopped as far as I can tell.) Generally the sc...

The Cree soft whites are dimmable and have a 10 year warranty vs the non-dimmable and 2 year warranty for the comparable Feit. I cannot personally tell the difference between Cree soft whites and Incandescents so they are win-win as far as I am concerned. :D

Re: Z Ram anyone using it ?

There are some edge case performance situations where Windows does a really terrible job with swapping, and so in those cases it can make sense. We have a Java compiler farm and we use StawWind's RamDisk product to eek out about 25-200% better performance.

Use google to see how to install "Linux" onto the laptop model, most likely someone will have figured it out. Some laptops now require stupid utilities because they ALSO neglected to include a UEFI loader shell.

Re: PC Audio questions

1. Gold is one of the best electrical conductors, but copper and silver are still better. The advantage of gold is that it does not tarnish. I do not think gold plating makes any difference from a shielding perspective, since a microscopic layer of tarnish will not affect the shielding properties. ...

The reason you haven't heard about PC audio much is it became a solved problem about that time and then no one cared except for those people who somehow think there's something wrong or read too much Audiophile sites/magazines.

Re: Grounding a CRT monitor

I would guess you are picking up EMF hum from the flyback transformer on the CRT monitor, it's how old now? 10 years+? It could just need tuning or a new flyback (they crack sometimes from overheating). If could be a ground loop due to bad grounding in the PC and the monitor, so what you could do is...

This didn't take all THAT long on RHEL 6.4, 5.5, Ubuntu Server 12.04 or my Mac. I ran on all 4 as root. All of our machines except my Mac are pretty close to default except they are pretty locked down on the Firewall side.

Audizen that created that is dead, I don't think it reached enough mass appeal for anyone OSS to care. The format is basically really really dumb and I doubt any serious producer would let their music be converted to it.

Newegg has been looking more and more seedy as the days go by. That said, I don't think a bad review is going far enough. I would demand a refund for any used item, regardless. If they want to sell an item as refurbished that's fine, but don't try to pass it off as new, and ask new item prices. Be ...

If they don't turn things around with Windows 9 the enterprise world is probably going to deem them unreliable and find other vendors, at which point there's no coming back. What 'other vendors'? *shurg* Everyone has their own taste. I personally hated the skeumorphism in previous versions of Windows and I am totally glad it's gone, but honestly the window dressing is just such a minor thing. What made Windows 7 such a success? It was speed, or actually the perception of speed. People didn't...

Your friends who may or may not work in Redmond should also know that the flat, bland graphical style of Windows 8 is unanimously hated by anyone who tries to use it seriously. In the old days, windows could be themed. Now it's just "here's a dull, low-contrast solution that runs acceptably on...

If Comcast has issues with how much they charge for a service they have, they should raise the price not shape the traffic, but of course they are shaping the traffic because they have competing service and THAT is what's illegal. They claim that's not what they are doing of course.
