Re: Any Spam eaters here(Yes the canned meat product)?

I ate simply too much of the stuff, baked in large oven pans, while serving in the army (the draftees called it "godzilla meat" as in "mystery meat")... Got over the aversion to it only recently, many years later... and now I even voluntarily eat it ...sometimes. Mainly when I ha...

Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

I know you weren't responding to my post, but if I remember correctly, the pentium pro was already breaking down x86 instructions into "risc-like" microops while apple was playing up their imagined "x86 is doomed" record for the acolytes (which we're about to see a repetition of...

Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

The way I understand it ARM processors are decent for performing one task at a time, and to do a different task they need to be switched to do a different task in software. Not a good way to multitask. For raw horsepower, I don't think ARM will be able to beat the x86 design, based on, well, the wa...

Re: How Apple Dethroned Intel As the World's Most Innovative Chipmaker

It's WindWalker. He looks at the fact that x86 processors are actually useful for tasks that don't include viewing Apple-Approved content and picking from curated Apple-Approved ideas as the greatest thing that's wrong with the world today. x86 processors are not particularly useful for any task, t...

Re: Desktop Wifi - adapter question

How about some powerline homeplugs? They're as plug and play as you can get and I've been impressed with the minimal impact on ping/lag. Much better than wifi. These should do just fine, for example http://us.dlink.com/products/connect/powerline-av2-2000-gigabit-pass-through-adapter/ Unless you're v...

Houses in that area do have some extra lumber support going on, but for the most part it's just rinse and repeat with damaged property. A discussion could be had about whether the cost and upkeep of trying to make waterproof indestructible houses would be less than repairs, but I'll assume that the...

Even corporate press is now more and more referring to the chip makers "lax" attitude to upgrading capacity and more cautiously and less often towing the party line about "process switch" and the rest of that crap. The oligopoly and its practices are now eating into the viability...

I don't think this is a very smart move with Ryzen 3 coming soon. On the other hand, if it props up AMD sales it may end up good for the consumer -in the long term. Short term, it does kind of suck, but that's the exact reason we need competition in the cpu market..

Perhaps buying a few units of every kind of useless piece of crap "cryptocoin" as it appears, for pennies, and then sitting on that until the libertardians discover their next "stick it to the fed/down with fiat money" fad, would constitute a better scheme rather than overloading...

I have to agree with just brew it, and Rage Pro's experience only reinforces my antipathy towards Samsung. This company does not respect its customers. The core is running at 1050Mhz and the HBM RAM at a 'lowly' 500Mhz (I guess the insane HBM 4096 bit memory bus more than compensates for that, but I still get a chuckle out of it).

Not exactly a state of the art system (the i5-3470 is maybe getting a little bit long on the tooth for torture benchmarking, only 8gigs of ram), but my R9 Fury came through for me. Better than I expected.

Re: Hold Out for Ryzen 5?

I think at the low end, Ryzen will provide a better gaming experience than Kaby Lake. You're just going to have to get down into Core i3 territory before that's true, though. In the Ryzen 5 range, it's probably true that the Core i5 will do better at the same price range in games. Core i3 territory...

My 8-bit home computer, my 286, my original Pentium-133 and my Celery 300@450 never failed, they just became obsolete. They should call it the Pentium 5. I mean, it's worth it. Great chip, great value. The G4560 is even better as far as value for money is concerned. Have we ever had such a great entry level CPU since the wildly overclockable Celeron 300A?

The real miscalculation out of Wolfsburg was the expectation that EPA and CARB would show the same deference to VW (and its employment levels) shown by German regulators.  They figured on 4 months between discovery of the issue and public announcement by EPA/CARB.  They got 30 minutes.
